I don't get the discussion in the observation lounge at the end did data not listen to what Dr Soong said that if she finds out she's an android will shut down. So if they tell her she's an android then she will shut down.

Stephen Wray

Ah Tamagotchi! I still have my original NanoBaby, still works. LOL

Dan Williams

The actress playing Data's Mom reminds me of the woman with the Crystalin Entity. I struggle to keep them apart.

Dan Williams

genuinely confused how Juliana gave off "ambulatory waifu body pillow" vibes to you? where did that idea even manifest for you? and no, writing that comment off as "perhaps a harsh, but apt comparison" is complete nonsense.

uberelder

Well just look at the Soongs past, present, future...all of them have a little Ego-problem. Thinking they are the tip of evolution....So does Lore, i guess it runs in the family

Thomas88

By any chance are you guys reacting to Picard?

Ryan George

"Let's give Bella no personality so people can self-insert." Bella: "I don't like music." WHO DOESN'T LIKE MUSIC?! They made her not human. Lol

Adam Brown

Weird. I live on the diagonally opposite end of the continent, but it sounds like Kat and I have the exact same neighbours....

The Crazed Spruce

Great reaction as always - I am excited for the next one too!

It’s a sign of good writing for these episodes when the moral dilemmas have no easy or “right” answer. You can see merit in both potential choices.

Brian Hakala

Data's "lack of emotions" was always tricky to me and I'm sure tricky to the writers as well. To me, he doesn't have strong emotions, but still has to have wants, like wanting to be more human. If he wasn't like that and was somehow written without needs at all it wouldn't be a compelling character. EDIT: Some things mentioned in this episode also reminded me of the movie Ex Machina which I highly recommend if you haven't seen

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

The actress' name who played Data's mother is pronounced Finn-ooh-laa. Just wanted to chime in as a fellow Irish native. Unfortunately our first names are famously littered with excessive vowels!

Ken Rubotham

Definitely a lot of thorny ethical issues. Would the real Juliana have wanted her memories, personality and likeness to live on in an android? What are the ethics of deliberately programming a lifeform which could essentially live forever with a timed killswitch? What are the ethics of programming a lifeform to love you? What are the ethics of deliberately withholding such vital information about her existence (and to program her to shut down if she ever became aware of the truth)? Dr. Soong was a really shitty person with a god/creator complex, IMO. Personally, if I were Data, I would have told her, not because it would make me feel less alone, but because she had a right to know, as traumatic as the truth might be.

Matthew Zeidman

I would say on a conscious level, yes. That is what makes each of us uniquely who we are. Physically, no. She's an android in that department. Which matters more?

Henchman Twenty1

This reads like a fever dream; I like it!

Alexander Caldwell

Dr. Soong is one of the most self-aggrandizing characters in Trek. He totally played god by building android "children" in his own image, as well as creating for himself what is, essentially, an ambulatory waifu body pillow in Julianna (perhaps a harsh, but apt comparison). However, if he hadn't, we never would have gotten this adorable meet-cute episode with Data and his "mommy"; a real "take the good with the bad" kind of situation. I guess when it comes to philosophical questions of the agency of life and the immortality of the "soul", it is best to manage one's expectations...at least when it comes to Hollywood writing. Still a nice episode, though.

I was unable to load the video via the Patreon app. There is usually a link underneath that works to Vimeo but tapping on the video to load vimeo doesn't seem to allow access. I have managed to load the video though via Web browser through Patreon but video player in there is not as good as Vimeo

Peter

He probably used the same type of subspace link as in the tng episode brothers to interface with her positronic brain remotely and uploaded the hologram.

Hampus Theander

Guest Star: *exists* Kat: IMMEDIATELY sus

Firefly24601

I think from very early on in this series, they basically believed Data really did develop emotions. He just doesn't have them the same way humans do. There so many times where he acts like maybe he DOES have them.

Joe Concepts

I find it interesting they continue to include suggestions that Soong was sometimes a sketchy guy. Like here, he was completely certain it was right to recreate her with no ethical questions at all. And maybe that was just selfish. But is she still Julianna or not?

Joe Concepts

I can't beleive no one caught the script error of this story. Th hologram of Soong says Data's mom left him, but the only way he could have put that in the message would be if he already knew that it had happened, so what, did he track her down, knock her put, implant the hologram and then just shook is hands from her?

Mike

Kat, so it's the start of street racing season? That noise has to be irritating at any time, not just during recording, Again, Brent Spiner for the win, Can't believe he's been around since the early 70's. Here he is as an 'imposter' on To Tell the Truth in 1972. Love his look. https://youtu.be/r6f4EK9fvIg

Bruce Bromley

Selfish, perhaps, but, who among us would not recreate a loved one, lost to tragedy

Mark Chrisco

I spent a summer in Prague as an Android during grade school. You can inherit a lot it turns out, I inherited a haunted castle! It's gone now. Long story, it basically imploded like the house in the Poltergeist movie.
