The Power of the Doctor, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! S13ep9

Comments

I think i must have fallen asleep watching this episode originally, cause like half of it I cant remember. Like characters returning and even the whole master transfer thing. odd

Merkavar

Paula: there should be a companion support group. Kat: *visually yelps trying to keep a straight face*

Benjamin

Yes I think it's about 57 years since Ian's last appearance. It's a pity former Sergeant Benton wasn't included as he knew the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Doctors.

Dr Q Who

Sophie Aldred says that she burst into tears when she was asked to come back to the TV show. :)

Also, I can't believe they had the Master be Rasputin without giving him a ridiculous death scene that would have cost him several regenerations. talk about a missed opportunity. I bet the Master himself hoped it would happen, since his plan didn't actually require him to take over 1916 Russia.

here's the thing, while David Tennant was the tenth doctor, in "day of the doctor we discovered that due to the war doctor, he was actually the eleventh doctor. then in "time of the doctor" we discovered that due to his fakeout regenration in series four, he was technically also the twelve doctor. now he could also claim the the title of the fourteen doctor (who is technically the sixteen). that is a lot of David Tennant...

What an amazing ride this has been. Thank you both for letting us be your companions on this journey. Watching Paula's evolution from newb to fan has been such an experience. Since I first watched waaaaay back in the Fan Theory days, it has been amazing: from "Fantastic!", to "Allons y!" From "Geromino!" to "Shutity shut up!" to "Brilliant!", it has been so much fun watching the show again through your eyes. And now, we can watch the new shows together. I cannot be more excited as we venture on and watch ... who?

What you said about loving when companions get to decide on their own whether to walk away from their adventures with the Doctor is so spot on. That’s one of my favorite things about when Tegan left. It was her deciding she had had enough of the Doctor and the death and destruction that surrounds them, telling them off, and walking away on her own terms. I loved it when I first saw it back in the ‘80s and still love it today. I remembered that reaction to the chaos that surrounds the Doctor when Nine said, “Just this once, Rose, everyone lives!!”

Ps, this was meant to be a reply to your comment about robes above ^^

Sufyaan Kazi

Ha, I never got why he said that, but it totally makes sense now!!!!!

When I saw the trailer for this episode, showing both Ace and Tegan, I had two things on my wishlist: Baseball bat (check)✅ “Braveheart” (check)✅ Only on this rewatch, however, did I realize we also got a “Rabbits!” from Tegan as she climbed down the shaft. Warmed my little heart!

Lloyd B

And of course, it makes perfect sense why the manifestation of the 8th Doctor “doesn’t do robes”, considering the context of that quote in the movie!

Lloyd B

They haven't seen the TV Movie yet. Hopefully they'll catch the reference the other way around when they do! It's such a classic Master moment!

Nicole Mazza

Thankfully the YouTube video reminded me that today is Wibbly Wobbly day. No email notification :( Love this episode. But those volcanoes are gonna need to be tapped ASAP before the pressure builds. They're a necessity.

Bill

So Ncuti had a filming clash I believe which is why he couldn't immediately become the 14th, hence DT agreed to step in. Also, the BBC was celebrating 100 years and had a lot of look backs, show revivals across many shows etc and so it made a lot of sense for Doctor Who to revisit old faces and characters too in this episode even though it wasn't the 60th. It was a really genuinely beautifully told story and Jodies' scenes were so beautiful with Yaz. Her regen was so 13, bright, colourful, hopeful, happy and the soundtrack was fantastic. Thank you Doctor Who 😁

Sufyaan Kazi

Wasn't there a trailer that was released right after the episode? eh, guess it was more of a teaser if anything.

Liam

I never noticed on first watch, that Sacha says "You gotta dress for the occaision" Great callback to the TV movie ! Congrats Paula!! 😃

Sufyaan Kazi

While waiting for the 60th, do please react to the Lockdown Who minisodes that were released on youtube in 2020. Some beautiful postscripts to earlier stories.

Paul Flux

And Ian Chesterton now has a Guinness world record for an actor returning to the same role after the longest break in history!

WE LOVE YOU jOSH <3 - Kat and Paula

Time Lord

Congratulations, Paula! Well done! 👏🎉

I am 100% behind an Ace and Tegan spin-off, where they freelance for Kate and UNIT! And now that Paula is caught up (congratulations!) the viewing choices are obvious for between New Who series - you’ve got all of Classic Who waiting for you, and I’m sure everyone here agrees and is keen for that journey for the both of you. Plus, of course, at the very least, Sarah Jane Adventures 😀.

Lloyd B

It's established that the Doctor has borrowed faces that he's seen before (Twelve took note of the fact) and in the 50th special we saw that he'll someday revisit the Fourth Doctor's appearance. So there's precedent for the 14th Doctor to revisit the face of the 10th, while still being 14 and not 10. But that said, the fact that the costume changed at the same time signals that SOMETHING stranger than just a remembered face is going on. Presumably it will be the subject of the 60th anniversary special. Outside the show's context, it makes perfect sense. When it was announced the next episode after 13's departure would be the anniversary special, I wondered "How can they possibly give the new Doctor the focus needed to establish himself while also having the traditional meeting of past Doctor's for the 10 year anniversaries?" This is obviously the solution: they'll turn over the anniversary to past Doctors in whatever way that story plays out, and wait until that's done with to give the "real" new Doctor the solo focus he'll need in his first episode. Also: what to do with the Wibbly Wobbly tier until November? Classic, Classic, Classic! Please!

Keith Goodnight

Oh, and Barbara was sadly not one of the people at the meeting, just Ian. Jacqueline Hill -- who played Barbara -- died back in 1993. But there was Jo Grant (Katy Manning) and Mel/Melanie Bush (Bonnie Langford), though -- as well as Ace, Tegan, Graham, Dan, Ian, and the empty chair for, supposedly, Sarah Jane. ❤️

Nicole Mazza

Poor Paula is TOTALLY going to have to watch the 60th trailer before Gally, if she hasn't already. There are sooooo many casting spoilers in it that I'm sure many people will be talking about at the con that it'll be nigh impossible to shield Paula from them. (Oh, and I think that the 60th is going to be more than one episode -- sort of like the Tennant specials from his last year -- but the details haven't been confirmed yet, at least to my knowledge).

Nicole Mazza

There was one empty chair in the support group? For Sarah Jane, maybe? William Russel (Ian) got into the Guinness Book of records for this episode, being the longest gap for an actor playing the same character - 57 years, 3 months, and 28 days between appearances.
