I think one of the funniest references the show pulls is the kindergarten with holes in the cliff wall, especially Amethyst sliding into her hole, a strong homage to the horror manga "The Enigma at Anigawara Fault" by Junji Ito. Reportedly, he had no idea about the show and thought the screenshots he kept getting shown was fanart. And a little sad how that overshadows how the giant gem machines littering the kindergarten look just like HIV viruses in a microscope.
