Doctor Selar of the medical staff would gave been a better choice for the Romulans to recruit for this assignment.

Troi knowing that freighter captain was lying was the only point her empathic powers were really necessary. Unless they helped her deal with the commander a little.

Even the first time we saw Cardassians, at least one of them felt bad about their past. The captain was more warlike than he let on of course, but the one O'Brien talked to regretted that massacre.

Personally, I love how an empath is forced to play a person with absolutely *no* empathy.

To me, Carolyn Seymour will always be Queen Myrrah from the Gears of War series. Whenever she pops up in these Star Trek episodes, Myrrah is all I can hear. She does a fantastic job as the big bad in Gears, and does an amazing job in this episode of bringing that same energy while also at times drawing sympathy from the viewer. She’s just a fantastic actor all round.

If you start to watch the TNG movies, please don't skip the first one (Star Trek Generations). Yes, it's also about Kirk and his crew, but you already watched a number of TOS episodes togehter and I think Katrina likes them. And while Generations is not as good as First Contact it's still a really good movie with many wonderful moments.

Agree with the poster above.....while there are certainly far too many episodes where Troi has been violated, Picard has had a ton as well. Apart from the 2 BIG ones mentioned above, he was also kidnapped or taken against his will in S3 "The High Ground" and "Allegiance", and in a sense also the "The Inner Light" as well to name a few. And that doesn't even count the number of times Q has done it.

I wouldn't say Troi is always the one getting violated. Picard has been abused and/or violated badly at least twice. Those two examples are first in Chain of Command and before that in Best of Both Worlds.

If you all are considering any new Gallifrey Gals t-shirt designs, may I suggest “Romulan Is the Word You’re Looking For,” “No Shit, Sherlock” and “Geez Louise.”
This episode definitely stretches the conceit of the universal translator, as I doubt Deanna speaks perfect Romulan. Additionally, the explanation as to why they chose to abduct and surgically alter Deanna, rather than use a sympathetic Romulan, is a little thin. However, the incredible performances in this episode make up for any minor plot holes.

The actress wasn't in First Contact, the movie. She was in First Contact, the episode. Its the one where Riker is injured and discovered on that planet. I think she plays "Minister Marista Yale". Riker is hospitalized and it creates problem for the ruling party as they come to terms with there being other worlds. Oh, and an alien has sex with Riker

It's funny and strange when books as well as TV series and movies of the same genre use the exact same title for a major motion picture as they already did in a novel or episode of TV. This has happened at least twice in Star Trek where there was a TOS novel titled Final Frontier and a few years later Star Trek V The Final Frontier came out. First Contact a TNG 4th season episode where Riker disguised as an alien with webbed fingers is hospitalized and believed to be an alien as this culture is about to use warp drive for the first time making Picard and Troi introduce themselves to Mirasta Yale (Romulan Commander in Face of the Enemy) and then movie First Contact came out later none of these are comparable to the show or novel except for duplicating the title.

Obviously we have this newer storyline of the dissident movement, but it's also pretty wild to think that the overarching theme of some portion of the Romulan people not wanting to be war-like has been with us since all the way back in Balance of Terror.
Just subbed a little while back and I'm glad I did, some of my personal favourite episodes are in and around this part of the series. Not that seasons 3,4, and 5 aren't great (they are) and there are a lot of gems to be found in 1 & 2 as well, but season 6 fucking slaps.

I love this episode. Sometimes it can be underrated.
Considering the time that this episode was released, it would have been just after the USSR dissolved. There would have been many stories about defectors.
This is the first time in Star Trek where the Tal Shiar were mentioned by name and information was given in the episode as to who they were. They are very similar to agencies such as found in the USSR and China. The stories given by Commander Toreth of secret police style agencies taking away citizens in the night who dared to speak out are reminiscent of many stories that have come out of countries all around the world where freedoms have been curtailed by such agencies.
Interestingly, (and sorry if you already mentioned it as it is on memory alpha) a lot of the dialogue for Commander Toreth was written with Sean Connery's character from The Hunt for Red October in mind.
The biggest reason I still love this episode though is how it still resonates today. The world is currently hurtling towards more and more uncertainty with the potential of war always lerking around every corner. One of the things that this episode hints at, and certain later episodes of DS9 do as well, is the idea of Defectors, subterfuge and spies.
Sub-Commander N'Vek was a pretty hated character during the episode. He violated Troi by kidnapping her and having her surgically altered. He forced her into a deadly situation against her will and he killed a crew of 18 people. And, this is just what was shown on screen. However, Troi does speak up for him at the end when she says how brave he was. He was helping a dissident movement. He lived every day with the possibility of being discovered and killed. He may have had family who may have shared his fate if he was discovered. He may have been unhelpful in sharing information but, as Ensign DeSeve pointed out regarding Romulans, they learn very early on not to share more than is thought needed at the time (and, probably with good reason).
In the end though, he was responsible for the lives of those in the cargo. High value defectors who could pave the way for future defections.
Do the ends justify the means? This is a very important question that can be very difficult to answer. I personally would say no. It is dangerous to fall into a comfortability of accepting that idea. However, I also accept that the ends may never fully be known. How many lives go on to be saved because of this open link for future defections? How many potential wars will be stopped? Can it ever be measured. But, sometimes, a brave individual can be a changing point for history. I know there are a lot of individuals in the last 100 years who's individual actions allow me to live today in relative day to day comfort. I am grateful for that and remind myself that not everyone is so fortunate.
It is going to be other brave individuals who are going to be pivotal in stopping the war atrocities of today and tomorrow and many of them may never be known for the actions they take.
It is at this point I realise I have written a very long comment and thank everyone who has read to this point for sticking with what I have written as I step down from my soapbox. 😊 As I stated before, I really like this episode.

I had a feeling that the beginning would upset you a little Kat, but I felt you would enjoy the overall episode. In particular, seeing Deanna play a 'strong' role is a nice change from the ones she is normally given. Also, Carolynn Seymore did a phenomenal job with her role. Honestly though... when you have only a part on one episode, and you are able to make viewers side with you (what to do on 'her' ship), you know she nailed it. Anyhow, on to the next one!!
The next one though.. is a real heart stopper!!

Trek likes to keep and reuse actors they like. There are so many examples of actors returning again and again. That's one thing I've always liked, even if you recognize the actors returning.

If the plan went correctly then there wasn't going to be any violence, but even Spock will kill if it's absolutely necessary. They had to improvise and change the plan, for the greater good.

Carolyn Seymour was also under consideration for the role of Captain Janeway on Voyager, a part she really wanted. Its just she is one of those performers with a villianous appearance. A look that has gotten her a lot of work in that type of role, not so much as the "hero."

The only problem I have with this episode is Spock would never condone this use of violence and murder. That's why the Vulcan nerve pinch was invented after all.

Hands down the best Troi episode. This really shows off why the actress was hired in the first place, so it's so odd why so many of her episodes are, not the best.

Carolyn Seymour was in the episode First Contact, not the movie. The episode had a character say”I always wanted to make love to an alien!”

One thing Carolyn Seymour was in the season 4 episode "First Contact" (not the TNG Film "First Contact") where she played Mirasta Yale. She was the scientist that was about to break the warp barrier on her world when Commander Riker was injured and put in one of their hospitals. Star Trek First Contact the movie will be a must watch though.

Finally, a decent Troi episode where she doesn't lose her powers, get impregnated or is mentally manipulated by some alien. Took long enough!
Excellent guest star performance by Carolynn Seymore. If her character despised the Tal Shiar so much maybe Troi could have taken her into her confidence? The commander could then just claim she was obeying orders and had no idea what the mystery cargo was or who Trio really was.
Plot hole: Why the hell would Troi have the access codes to the Federation sensor net along the Romulan border? Does Mr. Mott, the Enterprise barber, have them too? Does she have these codes memorized? If Capt. Picard needed them he'd likely have to look them up on the computer. This makes no sense.
