1984: Trek Edition.

Troy Convers

Picard is a terrible artist. Remember when Data roasted his horrible painting?

Ashley

Very much. I thought I heard or read somewhere there was a possibility of Patrick Stewart not returning due to contract issues and this was one of the reasons for the switch.

Andrew Hogan

Zing

Andrew Hogan

I realize Paula is out in this, but would Katrina be against watching it, or has everyone decided it would be too much for her?

Andrew Hogan

They did look more comfortable compared to the uniforms though, and let’s just say I didn’t mind the view either.

Andrew Hogan

'I've always wondered how subversive it would have been adjusting the opening credits of this erpisode to feature :"Starring Ronny Cox as Capt. Edward Jellico."

Mark Chrisco

Man, what a torturous episode... 😏

Nolan

Have they definitively said that? I missed that? Shit.

John Welch

They've stated in previous TNG reactions that they will not be reacting to DS9.

Firefly24601

Are you going to start watching DS9 too? Or finish all of TNG first? (If so just like 3 and a half years to go till you react to In the Pale Moonlight :D )

Mostly Harmless

This episode definitely had more of a DS9 feel to it, likely to prepare viewers for what to expect. While there is no TNG farewell for O’Brien, he does get his send off in the DS9 pilot. I don’t know if it’s too spoilery to say, it if you go on to watch DS9 then there are a whole subset of episodes that have simply been branded “O’Brien must suffer”, so make of that what you will.

Matthew Scrivens

"There are FOUR lights!"

Matthew Berry

The only lasting and good thing Jellico did was have Deanna switch to the standard uniform. Her awful (colorless outfits as L'Waxanna called them) came in on season 2 after her drab grey (actually made of denim) first season outfit. With the exception of her flowing blue/green dress or off duty she was pretty much only in those same outfits. Her change to the uniform will become a focal point and necessary in a future episode but I will leave it there so not to spoil anything but certainly Marina Sirtis must've hated wearing those same outfits for years on end.

Brad Barter

Well, it all depends ... I remember being taken to the zoo a bunch of times as a kid and while those kind of zoos are considered inhumane now, at the time there was nothing wrong with it.

Ben Chan

Ps. My favorite scene is when Madred brings in his daughter. I mean ive heard of bring your child to work day but come on. Such a sick thing to do to the mind of a child.

Jay Fleming

Jellico is a jerk, but its good to remember that in an actual military or just a job, sometimes you have to work with arrogant people who think they don't need advice or dismiss others if they feel they have more expierence. These folks are tough to work with, and of course can get on your nerves, but everyone is deserving of a chance, and while he wasnt nice about it, He did get the job done and humbled himself when He had to. We cant always choose who we work with but with patience even when it isn't returned you can still complete the mission. But yeah, there were a few times i wanted belt him for being so impatient and arrogant.

Jay Fleming

I think it was in the first part when Picard briefed Crusher and Worf on the mission that he explained what their roles were. I may be mistaken. Picard was there because of his familiarity with the technology for the delivery system of the weapon, Crusher was there in her medical capacity to make sure they could effectively locate and destroy the metagenic material and Worf was the muscle.

Peter

Now that Kat has seen this. I REALLY want to see her reaction to the DS9 episode Duet.

Saucy

Paula about Jellico: " What a dick." Exactly. Dick Jones (and Cohaagen rolled into one).

David Brown

One of my favourite characters is a Cardassian

Brett Whittaker

David Warner is an old hand at Star Trek, as u said. He was 'St. John Talbot' on Star Trek V and 'Gorkon' in Star Trek VI. He played Gul Madred in this episode and was gonna play in DS9 but his wife talked him out of it cause they were on vacation. Whenever u put a POWERFUL actor to match Patrick Stewart, its gonna be explosive. Great reaction as usual. Since losing the job I had, ive had to cut expenses. Galliifrey Gals isnt one of those. LOL!!!! I'm keeping this channel

Sal Sanchez

Before I get into the heavy stuff, I must say that Paula looks fierce with her new haircut. The theme of dehumanization is an important one to explore, not just as a reminder not to repeat the atrocities of the past, but also to wake us up to the atrocities that never stopped and that we tolerate every day. Tolerance of and complicity in dehumanization is everywhere you look. We live in a country (for those of us in the U.S., anyway) where conversion therapy is the most popular “treatment” for autistic people. We live in a country where someone can be murdered in the street for being BIPOC. We live in a country where transgender people can’t even use the bathroom without defending their very existence. We live in a country where people step over the unhoused like garbage. In a world this cruel, where complete disregard for the humanity of others is the rule rather than the exception, can we hope to ever achieve anything close to what Star Trek tells us we can and must? I don’t think we can.

Artemis Zeidman

Hey there! Thank you so much for sharing your reactions! I have to agree that Patrick Stewart and David Warner's performances really, REALLY sold this episode. And it's clear that they cut the budget like you said in part one, but the simple dialogue between Picard and Madred was so compelling without any special effects that the extra dollars weren't needed. I do hope you eventually watch Deep Space Nine, perhaps after you're done with TNG. Regardless of whether you do or not, I'm happy to watch your TNG reactions. One last thing about a comment you made at the start of the video regarding the woman who wanted to put a content warning... You said it was Jeri Ryan, but she's an actress with nothing to do with TNG. Jeri Taylor, on the other hand, was a writer and I believe a producer as well with TNG and other Trek series. Just want to make sure you don't get pounced on by anyone for miscrediting anything.

Jonathan Bruser

I too liked that the objectives Jellico was trying to accomplish were the right things. His mistakes lay in how he went about doing them. He's not just a "mean person" archetype, he's more like a real person with things that he does well and things that he doesn't.

Firefly24601

The gravity of this episode makes me forget that this wasn't a season premiere.

fcast17

Yeah. Geordi already told Jellico he could do it, but Riker was the best choice for the job, so Jellico swallowed his pride and ASKED Riker to do it. Pretty much everything Jellico did was right for the mission. He's not likable, but he successfully completed the mission and secured Picard's release. We see how upset Riker got when Jellico was willing to sacrifice Picard for the mission. You know, put the needs of the many above the needs of the few. I'm sure I've seen that in Star Trek before.

John

So I have a pretty different read on the scene where Jellico goes to ask Riker to fly the shuttle. I know this is the moment where we are happy because Jellico has to eat crow and humble himself, but when I think about it, I think it shows real character on his part. He cares more about the success of the mission than his own ego. He's willing to humble himself before Riker, someone he strongly dislikes, because he understands that it is critical for the safety of the Federation and also might give him leverage to save Picard. It would have been pretty easy to give the assignment to the second-best shuttle pilot on the ship just to avoid the embarrassment. They probably would have also been successful. But he didn't. He sucked it up and took his lumps from Riker because his first concern was the mission and even the slightest improvement in the success rate was worth it.. And listen, I don't like Jellico. I wouldn't want to watch a show where he was captain. But in that specific scene - I think he was being a really good captain and Riker was kind of being a dick.

R. Chang

My fave 4 lights meme is the Wheel of Fortune. LOL

Terrell Kirkman

The Cardasians called Deep Space 9: Terok Nor. Unless I missed the comment somewhere above which is completely possible and most likely probable, I can't believe I am the first to the comment this here.

Matt O'Keefe

Not necessarily. Remember in “Encounter at Farpoint” he was able to manually reconnect the saucer by verbal commands, a task I’d imagine is not particularly easy (or at least not intuitive) since it’s normally automated. I’d wager only a particularly accomplished pilot would be able to do that.

Wilshire1701

Cardassians have a more than a little in common with Russians at the moment

Shelly

Yeah, but they make pretty decent tailors.

Mark Ten

There is a reference in there to a future episode.

Pickupthepieces76

Yeah, this is a phenomenal episode, and I adore it, even with the awful subject matter. The "You called me Picard" scene is SO wonder. I feel so much vindication.

Arek Schneyer

Can't deny that Jellico's mine trick was pretty bold and clever. He just acts more like a military commander than Picard. The guy knows what he's doing, but may not be as good a 'leader' as Picard.

Joe Concepts

Yes, I'd think in "reality" Picard would not have just taken command again so quickly. That's one of the problems with "episodic" style of TV shows. Need to hit that reset button at the end.

Joe Concepts

Why Captain Jellico was awesome. https://youtu.be/09TySF0FN6Y Spoiler Warning: 6:28 - 7:01 contains a spoiler for a future episode.

John

Maybe just maybe Riker could get away with disagreeing, but standing up and screaming in a commanding officer's face like that? Can't imagine any military would stand for that. Though I think a lot of it is his personal feelings for Picard.

Joe Concepts

I have to say that I was more on Jellicos side in this two parter than Rikers. Riker was way out of line to his commanding officer with his backtalk and attitude. Jellicos only sin was not being Picard. Having a different command style. That's it. He wasn't a tyrant. Data said that everything Jellico asked from Geordie and the rest of the crew was doable it would just require more work. Riker stomping his feet and whining about everything Jellico asks him to do would not fly in the real military. It is not a democracy. Good that Picard allows a more back and forth process in some decision making, but that is the captains prerogative. Jellico has a different style and it is not the crews place to push back against their captain. Having an asshole as a boss doesn't make the things he tells you to do inherently wrong. I once told an old boss I didn't understand why he wanted me to do something he had told me to do. He asked me if I understood HOW to do it. I said yes. He then said "good, you do the how and leave the why to me. You don't get paid for why." He was a total dick. But here's the thing...he was right. The thing he told me to do 100% needed to be done. Now it would have been NICE if he had taken the time to explain why to me, but but in the end my job was to do what he told me to and his was to know why everything needed to be done that way. Riker is a whiny baby in this episode.

John Welch

This episode started a conversation.back in the day that asked the question of "How much can a man take?" Meaning after the Borg incident and now this, how can Picard just step back into his position as Captain without a lengthy evaluation period?

Mark Chrisco

I can appreciate that they didn't feel a need to have Jellico be wrong, or make an outright mistake. Riker was correct in everything he said, but Jellico also won the day in the end. (with the crew's support of course, which is the only way to get things done)

Ben Chan

The only part about this I don't like is they pulled the whole "Riker is the best pilot in the Galaxy" thing out of nowhere.

Mike

Its not personal with the Borg. Cardassians are just bad people- I think its due to their neck biology - I bet they are in constant pain because they cant stretch properly. The point about the lights is not to just get Picard to lie and say there are 5, but to break him until he is no longer able to tell what is real, his body rebels against his mind. Thats the point that the Cardassians could begin to reprogram him. This is the kind of BS psychological warfare the North Koreans did to captured soldiers during the Korean War. When you no longer can tell what is real, then someone else can reprogram your reality. Manchurian Candidate stuff.

Mark Ten

I'm surprised the Gals haven't slipped up and said that as well.

Mike

My stupid closed captioning showed Kardashians every damn time!!!

The Real NC Picker

I know it's no surprise at this point but I've always been impressed with the non-verbal acting from the supporting cast in this episode. Geordi in the Ready Room early on with Jellico, Worf in Sickbay, Beverly in the staff meeting, Troi in the final scene on the bridge. They do so much with looks and glances. It's one of the joys of having stuck with a show for years as a viewer and having actors that really know their characters.

DC

If you ever watch DS9, you'll learn that calling Cardassians "mean" is an understatement.

Joe Concepts

🤣

Christopher Hayes

Obviously They needed Beverly because of her tap-dancing abilities.
