The Quality of Life, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S6ep9

Comments

Measure of a Man, Redux.

Troy Convers

Definitely a film that the Gals would like.

Troy Convers

12:30: Poor Geordi! From Chief Engineer to baggage handler in a matter of seconds!

Josef Schiltz

Since that particular can of comment worms has already been opened, the next couple of episodes can be a bit "difficult" to watch. TAFLs!

Devin

If I recall correctly, Paula mentioned something awhile back about how some of DS9’s content was very triggering for her and she really didn’t care to do a reaction series for it. Unless I misinterpreted what she said or she’s since changed her mind, I wouldn’t push her on it.

Matthew Zeidman

Of course, we’ve seen other sentient artificial lifeforms in the Star Trek universe (including TNG) prior to this episode, androids included, so I don’t buy Data acting like the sentience of the Exocomps has made him suddenly not alone in the universe. Kat reminded us of the sentient nanites from earlier in the series, for example.

Matthew Zeidman

Same I'm not sure they will do ds9 but hopefully they do along with Voyager.

Christopher Hayes

I hope you watch Deep Space 9 and do reactions to it like you do for TNG

Jonathan Emery

I recall hearing once that the creators designed the Exocomps based on the design of a robot sidekick from the anime series "Dirty Pair." The anime robot was called Nanmo. I don't recall the source for that and I don't know whether it's true, but if you Google an image of Nanmo from Dirty Pair, there's definitely a resemblance.

Keith Goodnight

The Camo (spelled right?) cat content at the end was great. I liked Crusher in this episode, Gates was great in her scenes.

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

Looking ahead, and there are a LOT of great episodes coming up. Even the weaker episodes left this season are still pretty fun, especially on first watch. Kat's in for a treat.

The Crazed Spruce

The thing about Measure of a Man that this calls back to me is when Maddox said everyone thought of Data as human because "it" looks human but if it were a "box on wheels" they wouldn't. Now, data is defending a bunch of "boxes on wheels" just as Picard did.

Judge Brehon

My, how I love this episode. I do love when Data figures stuff out, And it is significant to me that Data was so eager to prove that they were alive, he brought the exocomps back before the experiment was fully complete. Data's determination, once he has decided what the right thing to do is, is always inspiring, as is Riker's understanding of his conviction.

Arek Schneyer

Oh, also, it seems Starfleet has a VERY rigid view on lifeforms as labour and does not approach such a dynamic with glee, but caution and a desire for clarity. I don't think that if any human from the 24th Century had an opportunity to utilize a workfoce that had even a potential for growth as a living being, they would EVER approach that situation with anything but solemnity, respect and wariness. Certainly not gleeful smugness, crass humor and joy at having power over a lesser creature.

Nolan

I love that the way they chose to call back "Measure of a Man" wasn't in bringing up the same philosophical arguments, but the more emotionally significant aspect that Data remembers how Picard stood up as his advocate, which inspired Data to do the same. (although you know if this had been a Wesley episode instead of Data, we'd have heard some more "Shut up, Wesley!")

Ben Chan

Is anyone else reminded of Huey, Dewey & Louie from Silent Runnings? Quick, let the Exocomps play poker and see if they can bluff Riker. Thats the real test!

Mark Ten

I named my robotic vacuum "exocomp"

Paul Ilardi

I'm super excited to see Kat's reaction to the next 2 episodes. Should be good content

Corum Hayes

When this episode first aired some fans referred to the Exo-comps as Mr. Potato Heads in space! The props will get reused a number of times on TNG and subsequent shows, just changed around a bit, but with the same basic shape.

Henchman Twenty1

Oh man, the next two episodes. I really hope they at least check out the DS9 pilot after them, but I feel more and more that I'll be sadly disappointed. Right, so seeing how they both immediately empathize with the Exo-comps, I think the gals are right in saying the new Battestar Galactica would be a rough show for them. Like, would actually be a devastating experience. It's funny how that dual fluorescent tube light blinking in sequence prop is just such a ubiquitous "sci-fi science lab" prop that despite it's utter pointlessness, it works as background equipment that would conceivably be there BECAUSE it's everywhere. Also, a rare episode where Doctor Crusher has the blinds in her office open a bit. But yes, I think the question of life in this episode definitely works more as a dramatic element for those that initially approach things with a level of emotional detachment that then evolves, rather than those that bring a, shall we say, emotional bias with them? Not that that's wrong or a criticism, just a different outlook.

Nolan

If this first aired today, the internet would be calling the beard scene woke, feminist, anti-male propaganda.

Joe Concepts

Next one is a duzy, Paula please brace Kat for it.

Mike

We have 23 minutes left till critical. We will resolve the situation in exactly 22 minutes and 59 seconds, give or take a second.

Pickupthepieces76

9 episodes into this season! Buckle up!

Jonathan Emery

I forgot that Geordi meme is from this episode (the open palm and the finger point).

Jarrod Wild

Thanks for the info there. It should be fixed soon :-)
