MARK F JENKINS

**********Possible Spoiler's********** I would disagree that this incarnation of The Master comes before one of of the other master's. I bring this up only because we know who The Master was before john simm, whom spent his time running from the Timelords to keep from having to fight in the time war. It also can't be any Master that came before due to the arc they set up this season. My best guess is Missy either got resurrected or ended up being able to regenerate some how while also finding a way of escaping. Afterwards maybe The Master decides to look for The Doctor after failing to find The Doctor he decides to go to Galifrey in hopes of finding him, only he doesn't find The Doctor he finds the secret that is the basis for most of this series and the next. This version of The Master in my opinion really has seemed to of moved passed trying to get The Doctor to see things his way. He also seems to have an actual reason to hate The Doctor this series other than The Doctor spoiled his plans. In many ways I agree with Paula's comment about The Master being sad and Missy is the first incarnation of The Master that we saw being sad/showing remorse and Missy really seemed like she just wanted to be "friends" and travel with The Doctor. I really think the other theory gained traction due to people not liking the Timeless Child arc of this season, which in my opinion does break cannon a little but not in the way most people talk about. The way it breaks cannon for me is River Songs whole arc of being a Time Lord from being conceived in the time vortex. But Doctor Who has always broken canon and I kinda feel like it is at it's when it does lol.

William Green

Yes he comes after the Lumiat.

mark saunders

Actually Sacha Dhawan's Master is definitely after Missy. When Big Finish, the audio dramas, were doing their Master 50th anniversary special they approached Chris Chibnall about where Dhawan's Master fit in the timeline and he confirmed he is after Missy. Since then various other official media; books, other audio dramas and short stories have cemented him as post-Missy.

mark saunders

Well after Missy means after the Lumiat because the Lumiat is also Big Finish origin and she comes after Missy. But tell me in wich adventure? Or did i overlook it in Masterful?

Thomas88

I guess we finally have an answer to the question of whether or not Paula accidently spoiled herself when she look up Sacha Dhawan during "an adventure in space and time". she totally did, but then manage to convinced herself during the episode that she somehow got it wrong.

tal goren

And your theory would be correct.

mark saunders

It's since been confirmed by Big Finish and several other tie-in media that Sacha Dhawan is definitely after Missy.

mark saunders

Yes. Another female incarnation who changed her name to the Lumiat but was then fatally wounded by Missy and started to regenerate...presumably into Sacha Dhawan.

mark saunders

ok but the award for this ep goes to Kat's poker face at 49:17 :)

I usually try to keep comments shorts and vaguely silly. But oh well... I was frankly relieved that they brought the Master back and thrilled that it was Sacha Dahwan. Although, unlike Paula, I am terrible at guessing ahead in shows and I felt a bit perplexed around half-way through this epsiode as to why such a great actor had been cast in what was appearing to be a soft role. (If you can track down the single series black comedy Not safe For Work, I think you will enjoy it). I wasn't at all comfortable with the idea that Missy's redeption arc would be either the end of the character or a permanent change. A delighful journey with Michelle Gomez to be sure, but if the Master isn't ging to be The Doctor's foil, then they are greatly reduced in usefulness to the story, perhaps even pointless. I am almost ashamed that I felt a certain glee at the end of this episode at the knowledge there would be a certain portion of the fandom that would be wailing "you've ruined Missy". There is so much rooom in this show for trying different things and exploring delightful what-ifs and Missy was obsolutely that. But for me, The Doctor and The Master need their damage to make them weave interesting stories. I also think it is okay to leave gaps in the watcher's knowledge, either to fill in later or to keep the audience guessing and writing their own stories in their minds to fill in the journey. The manic, bubbling anger of Dhawan gave me a sense of excitment for the prospect of the rest of the series. Almost ashamed, but not quite.

BriefMortal

I think Yaz was more reflecting on how she felt at the time, rather than the physical properties of the realm she found herself in.

Firefly24601

My theory on the Master is that Missy is a later incarnation than John Simm, so she could have remembered he was going to kill her and prepared for it.

David Tomlinson

Spoiler The things we know is that Ohh isnt the next Master after Missy. When Missy dies, she cant regenerate (like John Simm said) so she performed an old and forbidden Timelord ritual to focus the remaining energy of her body. Because she was on the good side, when she dies, that energy was good. So the amalgamation of all the good "stuff" created a "good Master" and she called herself "the Lumiat". Maybe he comes after the Lumiat. To me personal he is a classic Master. We only know the Child from "sound of drums" as the first. After that Richard Dreyfus as the 2nd and Delgardo was incarnation 13. So between 2 and 13 is where i would put him. We also know. After Delgardo comes the Pratt/Beevers rotten corpse Master, after Beevers comes Ainley and his Master is executed by the Daleks and turns into Roberts. Roberts is reborn during the Time-War and became the War Master, who becomes Simm. But does Simm really turns into Missy who knows.

Thomas88

KateKat’s point about the Master, that we don’t know whether on his timeline whether this is before or after Missy, let alone before or after Mr Saxon, is absolutely fair; I certainly don’t remember an explicit reference one way or the other, though the convention does tend to be that unless something is called out as such - like with River’s and the Doctor’s timelines being in reverse - that things happen in the order we see them. Regardless of that though, we’ve seen John Simm’s Master die or at least “he can’t possibly come back from that” on three occasions, meaning at least two of those times the death/exile didn’t fully take. We’ve seen regeneration sometimes take a while to start. And we’ve seen previously-believed-to-be rules about when you can and can’t regenerate turn out to be strongly worded suggestions, like with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor being allowed to happen right after Matt Smith’s explanation of why it couldn’t. In other franchises it would be “unless you see the body they can always come back”, but in Doctor Who the person could be in the scene very much alive and yet be looking at their own body, and for that to not be the strangest part of the episode. I will admit to initially having issues with how the Master could be back, again, at the time, but eventually I realised that there was plenty other things that should be harder to handle, accept, etc with the show, and the Master being the line too far to cross was definitely my issue and not a failure of the show’s.

AJ

Absolutely, this is my favourite series of the Chibnall era and probably my third favourite series out of new Who.

Jade Ellis

Sacha Dawan 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😁😁😁😁👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Sufyaan Kazi

Really enjoyed your reaction, you guys are just so amazing😁 And I’m sorry about some of the comments here, sometimes people say stuff that just doesn’t need to be said. Really looking forward to your reactions to the rest of Series 12. Some of my favourite ever episodes coming up.

The Adopted Whovian

Based on the Big Finish productions there was another Master between Michelle Gomez's and Sacha Dhawan's.

Bill

Yes, I remember thinking at the time that Beryl Reid was totally miscast for the role.

ian webster

Sacha Dhawan is a perfect Master. But now it begins. The... writing. Slow burn for now. Enjoy the goodness.

Bill

"Nothingness" Like, except the innumerable things hanging out of the unseen sky. Oh and the stuff on the ground. "Completely alone." Again, you didn't really look around or check that was in any way true.

Bill

OK, how many of you have been on pins & needles waiting to see Paula's reaction to the reveal? Raise you hands! Note to the Gals - all through Classic era the Master dies and it almost never revealed how he comes back. Like the Daleks, he just returns. Accept it. Maybe Missy was wearing her ballistic petticoats. Doesnt matter.

Mark Ten

Sorry, most definitely disagree.

mark saunders

Fun fact - Lenny Henry, who plays the sinister Barton, used to have a comedy sketch show in the 80s, and in one skit he played a newly regenerated Doctor running up and down corridors in a dystopian future London run by a Cyberman Margaret Thatcher.

Lloyd B

And for me, this is where Chibnall’s era falls apart.

Scribbles

Been so excited for this!
