Adric’s death was a huge shocker to me when I saw it on its first broadcast on Chicago PBS. Since it was the first companion death since 1966, it was designed to be so.

Kathy A

to answer your prolouge, obviously it's the 80's, and like everyone else the Cybermen got a little more loose and decided to take up skiing as you can tell my their looks evolution.

playing catch up watching pt 1-2 , have to toss this up here since you looked it up, if only because I've never forgotten the moment and explination: "On his left lapel, this Doctor wore a celery stalk. He claimed in The Caves of Androzani that the celery would turn purple in the presence of certain gases in the "Praxis" range to which he was allergic, although this allergy was not mentioned by any incarnations before or since." the gases thing stuck with me,

You just leaked the name of a Series 14 episode! "The Butts of the Cybermen" 😆

Firefly24601

VHS was in it's infancy, reruns of the earliest serials was not yet a thing. Many of the fans at the time of Earth Shock never saw the original designs or only knew of them by reputation. This kind of Cyberman was already in place by the mid 70's and would continue until the series ended.

Mark Ten

He's totally my Doctor, too! ❤️❤️

Nicole Mazza

I'm sure they have many...EXCELLENT things to say to one another! 😉

Nicole Mazza

I remember watching it when originally broadcast, and sad to say but Adric’s death didn’t move me that much. I suspect that’s because he’d been written in a way that made it feel like he was constantly arguing with the Doctor, and as a child he irritated me greatly. With the passage of time I see it as much more tragic. In terms of the Cybermen, you do find in the fifth Doctor’s era, some of the villains do have a moustache-twirling pantomime feel to them, especially the master.

David Tomlinson

Poor Adric! Like many teenagers he just wanted to prove himself worthy, fit in and be accepted. The silent credits, focused on his gold star medal for Mathematical Excellence was a fitting way to close the episode, I feel. Of course, if Stephen Moffatt had been show runner, I’m sure he would have negated the tragic ending in the next episode by having Adric rescued in some wibbly wobbly way. As it is, the next story picks up pretty much where this left off, with the Tardis team still in shock, and Tegan yelling at the Doctor to go back in time and save him, while the Doctor tries to explain that he can’t and that that’s not how time travel works. From memory, that’s one of the earliest examples of the idea that once you’re part of events you can’t go back and change them. Also, spare a thought for the freighter crew and soldiers in the escape pod orbiting a devastated Earth 65 million years in the past!

Lloyd B

And I can just imagine her confronting a Cyberman and shouting “Get away from Adric, you DORK!”

Lloyd B

Here, here! There are over 200 Classic Who serials/stories surviving for the Gals to explore between New Who series once they are caught up, and I sincerely hope they circle back to dive into them. And let’s not forget The Sarah Jane Adventures!😄😄

Lloyd B

Going to watch the 'Murican Who movie to get Paul McGann video outing?

I posted above right as I started watching the video, here's a follow-up now it's done: I love all Doctor Who (when I say I haven't liked Chibnall's era, that's a relative measure— I'd still put it ahead of around 95% of all other shows) but Classic was my first love; I got onto it when PBS first started showing it in the US back in the late 70s, and I stuck with it during the "Dark Years" off the air, through licensed novels and the slow drip-drip-drip of VHS and later DVD releases. So I'm fully on board with the Gallifrey Gals going ahead quickly to get fully caught up, because then you'll have time to watch more than just a sampling of Classic, and I'm really looking forward to that! There are bad stories and bland stories as well as great ones, but I think they'll all make for great reaction videos either way. (Please don't just let the "Wibbly Wobbly" tier go dormant when waiting on a new season!)

Keith Goodnight

Teegan going around with a cyber gun just gives off such great Ellen Ripley vibes.

Bill

Hearing that Kat has hung out with Sylvester McCoy is amazing! I'm so jealous! He's MY Doctor. I'm glad you're watching one of his stories before the 60th... you two are the best

Brendan Falvy

"Inconsistency of showrunner" is pretty much it. Excellent opening guess, Gallifrey Gals!

Keith Goodnight

There's no "in-universe" reason for the change in Cybermen dispositions, but it wouldn't have been too jarring at the time because they had barely been onscreen in over a decade. I'm fairly convinced that the shift in Cybermen portrayal has a lot to do with being able to sell them as a credible threat without having an army of them. I think they worked out that having a small vanguard of more menacing and antagonistic Cybermen (with the hint of a much larger army lurking behind) was more cost effective, and they could do a bit more acting than they were able to get out of Daleks. And make them less like two-legged Daleks... Once you've watched A LOT of Classic Who, you start to get an idea of how one-dimensional the monsters could get. The greatest idea they ever had for the Daleks was Davros. They just stuck a mask on one of the Dalek voice actors, gave him a free hand, and the Daleks became completely altered and more compelling than their previous few outings. Not saying that totally worked here, but I love David and Mark, my Cyber Leader and Lieutenant. Cybermen to remember.

Brendan Falvy

Yeah, the silent credits with Adric's smashed up Math(s) badge is so brutal! But also the fact that he's clutching his dead brother's belt as things time out in the end is a nice, but super-sad touch. 😭😭

Nicole Mazza

I never thought that a week could last such a long time! (Well...7 days,in fact). Am going to enjoy watching this reaction VERY much :)

Ian Smith

Watch Classic Who, they said. It doesn't hurt emotionally as much as the Modern Who stories, they said. Because they didn't do emotion on TV back then, they said. Yeah. :(

Nicole Mazza

My jigging, rocking & voguing days are long over, I did tremble a bit because I know whats coming in Eps 4 and I was surprised that this was the story your other supporters suggested. Let me just say that maybe this the reason the Doctor so rarely travels with 3 companions... Adric's pointless death still leaves a bad taste. B-T-W - did you notice the 2 Cybermen standing in the corridor apparently chatting in eps 3? I mean, what do Cybermen have to chat about, the wives & kids? Cyber football scores? Please!

Mark Ten

Thanks Gals for reacting to this. It's the 5th Doctor story that I remember best from my childhood. If you've ever wondered why Brits are such a pessimistic bunch, its because we grew up watching stories like this! Although if you think this is rough, it's nothing compared to the final episode of Blake's 7!

Paul Flux

I was already dancing to the GG theme song, so I just kept on. :)

Eric

Oh, and Eric SAY-WERD is the way I've always heard it. :)

Nicole Mazza

Soooo excited to watch this reaction and have been anticipating it all week. There's a reason I always call this serial 'EarthSHOOK' instead of 'Earthshock', as it's definitely a doozy!
