Maybe absolute favorite.

Dan Williams

The one thing I've always found amazing about James Doohan is that he fought in WW2 and during the D-Day landings (a real true hero of his time). From such hell he became an actor and ended up being the favorite Chief Engineer we all know.

Kalhoun

Picard really shined in his scenes with Scotty and Geordi. The amount of empathy he has is really one of his best features as both a Captain and a friend is just great.

Ross Holditch

The only living friend he still has from those days is probably Spock.

Pranav Gulukota

It still hits me every time I see that interview

Todd Biggar

Independence Day was written by Dean Devlin. He was also producer of the series Leverage. Jonathan Frakes was a frequent director on the show, Jeri Ryan was a main cast member on one of the seasons, and Wil Wheaton was a recurring guest star. So there's definitely a connection.

Jonathan

I love Scotty so much. One of my favorites of TOS. And James Doohan is awesome as well. Check this out. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COJuF7n9gGA) I promise its a tearjerker and shows what type of person he is.

Red Claw

Great reaction, Gals! Loved it. Yeah, the thing about beaming through shields...lol. I remember when this episode originally aired, I was screaming at my TV, "You can't beam through the shields!" I seriously thought Geordi and Scotty were going to die!

Mark Steckel

I can remember as a little kid how excited I was to get the OFFICIAL Star Trek magazine edition that had an entire behind the scenes article about this episode...god damn I'm old...

Check some of these out. They're hilarious. https://www.geeknative.com/41608/star-trek-next-generation-characters-original-series-costume/

Always been one of my favorite episodes. This older version of Scotty always reminds me of my grandfather. Plus I’ve learned to appreciate this one a lot more now that I’m a little older myself. Great reaction as always!

The moment that the holodeck opened up to the TOS bridge is a huge one in terms of continuity. Since the first TOS cast reunion movie in 1979, the franchise had never revisited this era aside from a few returning actors and occasional verbal references to past people, places & things. The producers had always left it deliberately vague whether the TOS era with its 1960s designs & aesthetics would be left intact as part of the narrative history, or if it would all be ret-conned with a modern look a la Star Trek Discovery and Strange New Worlds.

Raja

There were several call-backs to TOS including the 10-forward scene "Its green". Plus the stories that Scotty was telling that ensign in his quarters. As far as the shields, u gotta remember, not only was the Jenolan already an old transport ship but its shields were probably not much more powerful than a standard shuttle or transport ship. The shields on a Starship are significantly more powerful than a small craft. Plus, u have to remember, THOSE shields were 75years out of date. No upgrades were performed after the transport crashed. On top of that, the shields were under tremendous stress at the time. Also, remember when Miles beamed over to the U.S.S Phoenix to speak with Capt. Maxwell??? He beamed over while that ships shields were up and at maximum. Miles explained that there was a 2-second window gap when the shields cycles. He says "Trust me, I can get thru" (and THAT was on a modern Nebula-Class starship). Beaming Geordi and Scotty woulda been a piece of cake. GREAT REACTION, Ladies!!!

Sal Sanchez

In The Wounded O'Brien actually beams through shields. Plus, maybe the older ships' shields no longer stopped modern transporters?

Joe Concepts

Yes boost is my favourite chocolate bar 🇬🇧 And this is one of my favourite all time of all the franchises episodes, the connecting of “generations” that generations didn’t seem to achieve much with the interaction of the crew on a wider scale then just the two captains meeting each other. Weirdly just thought about this on watching this time round with you girls that it was clever not to have Guinan present in ten forward otherwise………. Shhhhh spoilers…….

LonghillAndy

I wish Paula hand mentioned that just about every little event Scotty starts to describe was from an actual episode of TOS, including that great "it is green" bit.

Mike

It would have been great had Picard sat in the Captain's chair aboard the original Enterprise, if just for a moment.

Mark Chrisco

In the novelization of this episode, Scotty was offered the opportunity to view the fates of his old crewmates, but declined as it might only bring him sadness.

Mark Chrisco

Well, the computer did say "There have been five FEDERATION vessels with that name." The NX-01 was from before the founding of the Federation. Now, why the computer would make that distiction on its own is a matter for debate, but we can rest assured that by the parameters randomly given, the computer is indeed correct, lol.

Nolan

Love this episode. Really excited for the rest of s6 and 7. Can't believe it will all be over around this time next year. The continuity error you pointed out is a small one but, I always just passed it off as the ships shields probably had gaps in them from where they were likely collapsing under the stress. If they had added a quick couple of lines like that then it would have all been explained. Unfortunately, the writers probably just forgot that beaming through shields is a problem. It's easy in Star Trek to write around the problem if done correctly and has been done before.

Peter

Kirk's enterprise isn't technically the first enterprise the first one was built during the 22nd century captained by Jonathan Archer in the show Star Trek: Enterprise. And that doesn't even take in to account the many regular ship's people have also named enterprise lol.

William Green

Just seeing this episode after watching James Doohans interview about the suicidal fan. After that, this episode hits even harder. You two have to watch that interview.

Thomas88

A note about this week's bridge ensign; that was Ens. Sariel Rager, played by Lanei Chapman, who appeared twice before as the same character in the 4th season episodes "Night Terrors" and "Galaxy's Child". She also played Whoopi Goldberg's daughter in the 2001 movie Rat Race.

Alexander Caldwell

Well not all of Scotty’s friends are gone. Spock is still around and so is Dr. McCoy (who I am convinced is just making sure he outlives Spock).

TB

Love this episode. I think I'm in the majority in saying it was even more poignant with the passing of Nichelle Nichols last week.

Bruce Bromley

A favorite episode of mine, although the next one is even higher on my list. Interesting how both Scotty and Geordie reference episodes that were... not great towards women. Galaxy's Child of course, but Scotty references "Elaan of Troyius" from TOS which apart from being a not great episode with *questionable* wardrobe choices had some scenes that would NOT fly today. But "It is Green" is a reference towards a really funny scene in a pretty good episode called "By Any Other Name" that also involves green liquor. I absolutely love how much this era treats the original show with reverence and respect for starting the franchise. They didn't feel the need to change or update any of the visuals/designs to be more modern, that was just the way Starships looked back then. They referred back to old stories without adding or changing details. This episode was a loving homage to a show that inspired so many, and certainly not a cynical, content-quotient filling cash-grab brand capitalization business ploy made with more focus on making money than love, care and reverence for the material. Stuff like that always rings so hollow and devoid of true joy to me, whereas this you can FEEL the investment of many of the people involved, from the writers and some of the actors down to the set decorators. They aren't egotistically concerned with leaving their mark on the franchise with this original series revisit, they just want to pay their respect to the show that started it, and it shows. Oh, and obviously there is a sad irony in you guys watching Scotty revisiting the original era and that empty bridge around the time Nichelle Nichols passed away.

Nolan

Obviously, this episode hits a little harder this week, or atleast it does with me, with the loss of Nichelle Nichols.

The Real NC Picker

Other trivia: Data's line about the alcohol "It is green" is a callback to a TOS episode, "By Any Other Name." Scotty needs to get one of the antagonists drunk (it makes sense in context) and does so by drinking with him. When both are already very drunk, they start on a new bottle and the alien asks what it is. Scotty goes through exactly the routine that Data did in this episode, ending with "It's green."

Keith Goodnight

The scene in Ten Forward where Data can't figure out what the beverage was and just says, "It is green", was an homage to a TOS episode where Scotty was trying to drink an alien under the table in his quarters and said the same thing when he couldn't remember what was in a bottle, "It's green".

Henchman Twenty1

To his credit, Levar Burton voiced his uneasiness with his early scenes with Scotty, thinking Geordie would not be so annoyed and dismissive and fearing a negative reaction from fans. Regarding the bridge, the plan was to build only a small side for him to film against. However, word got out to collectors who volunteered the use of their recreations to complete the set. Back in the day, photos of this episode were shown at a convention I attended. When James Doohan was seen on the bridge, there was silence at first, until the audience picked up on which bridge he was on, making this the most anticipated episode of the season.

Mark Chrisco

I liked the Barclay Transporter episode but for me this is the first truly great episode of season 6. As a life long Star Trek fan my feelings of this episode have evolved as I have gotten older. I was 15 when it aired and had already seen most of the original series in reruns as a kid. I never got to see them all until I bought the complete DVD set in the late 90's. When I first saw this it was just an exciting cool nod to TOS. Re-watching it in my late 20's after actor James Doohan passed made me view it more as a time capsule to his legacy. Watching it today at 45 makes me feel for the first time a little like Scotty himself. A man who sees himself closer to the end of his journey than his beginning. I grew up with the Trek, and the crew of TOS in particular have always been a constant presence in my life. But one by one I have seen them pass. Deforest Kelley, James Doohan, Leonard Nimoy, Majel Barret, Grace Lee Whitney and most recently, Nichelle Nichols. All that remains of these constant companions of my childhood are William Shatner, George Takei and Walter Koenig. The only consolation I take is that they have left such a huge and entertaining legacy for us to enjoy and for you two to share with us.

John Welch

Although I selfishly wish they had gotten through movies Star Trek 1-6 so Katrina could have gotten that shock with the initial shot of Scotty, great reaction as always. :)

fcast17

This is another episode I've been eagerly awaiting! I love this and seeing Scotty make a come back. It contradicts some events that come later but that's a discussion for another time.

Brian Moore

One of my all time favorite Trek episodes. Hits you right in the feels.
