Man of the People, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S6Ep3

Comments

Positives: Riker and Troi are a beautiful relationship. Not poly amorous, but complicated. Through the entire series, they are not a Couple. They love each other but aren't together, except for a few moments of enjoying something they are both willing to, but don't think should be solidified. More open than an open relationship or poly, no rules have been placed. It's almost a friends with benefits but the benefits are just part of the friendship... It's beautiful and makes for a solid relationship later....

Dan Williams

Remembering that this guy is one of my most hated villains, beyond Umbridge.... Few are as evil as this guy. Which makes it great, but ooooo, anger...... Even when I was a kid, and didn't understand rape beyond trump talking about Ivanka in '93, I knew this guy was fucked up... Breathing... Controlling ptsd rage......

Dan Williams

Season 6 has some great episodes, but also some really messed up psychological episodes. Definitely one that I usually skip, but I watched this time... Not an easy watch...

Dan Williams

I have a question, so sorry if this has been talked about before. Are you guys gonna get back together on screen or do you live to far away from each other now or some other thing keeping you lovely girls apart?

Christine Ester

The Riker/Troi relationship is my favorite thing about Star Trek, and I still ship them so much after all these years. They’re basically the Ross and Rachel of StarTrek. The movies and certain episodes of later series are essential viewing (reactions please!) if you want to follow the TNG crew and how their lives eventually pan out.

As a Canadian, I have heard this about American A&W and it boggles my mind, because it's honestly one of the best fast food places here.

Nolan

Speaking of A&W, if you ever get to Canada, try one of the A&W burgers. It's a completely separate company from the US chain and the burgers and far, FAR better!

Neil McRae

I think she talks about him more in a Season1 reaction, when he shows up in the first Ferengi episode.

Firefly24601

It was one of her acting teachers!! I believe she took a Shakespeare course ran by him and potentially one other one!! - Kat

Time Lord

Maybe he only is attracted to women so he only abuses the ones he is attracted to and would find men being obsessed with him too icky for his taste. Thus he not only is psychically abusive to them(to the point of death eventually) but is possibly homophobic or just heteronormative. I don't know. Just speculation on my part.

Matt O'Keefe

Paula just about broke the coolness scale when she casually mentioned she studied under Star Trek royalty. Details, please.

Matthew Zeidman

This is one of those not so good episodes I actually have zero memory of. Would never think of watching this one again

Brett Delbridge

I actually think this episode was based more in Jungian philosophy, Alkor was clearly a person who never had the strength to actually face his shadows, and allowed his shadow to consume him. He sent his shadow self into others. Truly weak and cowardly.

DarkAshtar

The only "Man of the People" candidate I can think of in recent history is Bernie Sanders. Sorry to mention politics but he really is a human of the people. Though, in my opinion a true human of the people never claims to be one.

DarkAshtar

The USS Voyager was still on the designing boards at this point. Janeway, a classmate of Will Riker, was probably serving on the USS Albatani (sp) as a Lt. Oh. Kathryn did have a younger sister, Phoebe. Whether she was in Starfleet is so far unknown.

Mark Chrisco

Yeah, I'm gonna watch the edited-for-YouTube version of this episode. Not a fan of the subject matter.

The Crazed Spruce

Hahaha oh no!! My bad!! - Kat

Time Lord

Can't wait for Relics!

Matt O'Keefe

The computer mentioning an upcoming appointment with Troi for Ensign Janeway is purely coincidence as Voyager wasn't even a full concept yet and Kathryn Janeway would've been at least a full Commander if not Captain already at this point in history. Obviously not yet the Captain of the USS Yoyager NCC-74656 but definitely not an Ensign. Most likely no relation but the Ensign could be a niece or nephew of hers for all we know.

Brad Barter

Hey, talk about open relationships all u want, Kat, but did u REALLY have to add "SO LONG AGO" afterwards??? Thanks alot, kiddo

Sal Sanchez

Armin Shimerman is great. After watching years of DS9 reruns, I've concluded Quark is my favorite character on the show. And the actor has the rare quality of making a likable character out of someone who in theory shouldn't be.

Joe Concepts

No one on the show points out, "Why do you only do this with women, you creep?"

Joe Concepts

Oh, man I forgot to mention in my comment, but. Farewell, Nichell Nichols, the actress of most barrier breaking character in Sci-fi, Uhura. She had an important job on the bridge, knew how to repair the communication system she manned, was able to take the helm and at one animated point was in command of the ship. Badass. Communication channel closed, sir. 😢

Nolan

Great reaction, as always. I gotta toss some love Beverly's way. She plays a more prominent role in this episode than I remembered and Gates McFadden is on point, as always. Any scene with her in this episode was enjoyable. There's even some seeds planted in this episode with her that will be important later in the season.

DC

That's no man, that's an entitled narcissistic brat.

Jonathan Emery

Season 6 is one of my favorite seasons, but this episode isn't one I look forward too. That said, your investment in the Riker/Troi dynamic makes this reaction worth it. But that also doesn't help this feels reminiscent of previous Troi falls for or has attraction to slimeballs. I suppose the only ones she actually had a relationship with were the slimy negotiator and the slimy colony administrator. Kinda annoying how she keeps getting these stories. I will say, an interesting element to why this guy is so awful is how he feels no remorse for doing this and easily justifies it... which of COURSE he wouldn't because those are negative emotions he purges into others. So Troi is feeling the guilt and remorse for him using her, which is so twisted. And because he immediately moves on to another person, he probably doesn't feel it at all. He doesn't feel guilty for this because he can't - a convenient arrangement for him.

Nolan

Just wanted to say thanks! Obviously I enjoy the experience of watching these episodes with you, but I enjoy your post-game discussions as much as the show itself.

michael mccafferty

"Cordrazine...tricky stuff." Re Riker and troi, I've always felt Deanna has always known she and her Imzadi, Will, woild be together. She's just been waiting for Riker to grow up and realize that fact.

Mark Chrisco

I usually skip this one. But haven’t seen it in a while so time for a rewatch. And see if I still don’t like it.

Joe Concepts

Actually I thought she showed some very good acting chops here. It’s a difficult character, much like Data, where they have an ability that hinders the actor from being human so to speak. The writers probably could have come up with some better excuses at times, but writing for a TV show has enough obstacles, so I think they did all right in hindsight.

Andrew Hogan

And a big PASSarooni on this one! As I have said before, it is as if the writers don't know what to do with poor Troi. She's always the victim of something or other. She looses her powers, she's pregnant, in a coma, mentally manipulated by some alien, et al. Not to fret though as she finally gets a good episode later on this season, and about time!

Henchman Twenty1

There’s only one other episode from this season besides this one that’s just okay, the rest are anywhere from good to great.

Andrew Hogan
