Hi Mark, Gallifrey Gals Gremlin here, I am gonna delete your comment just because of the spoiler about the 60th and it may not be info everyone knows just yet. But I would love it if you reposted over in the Discord spoilers channel for anyone that would love to read it! Thank you so much for your comments!

Time Lord

Ghosts is a BBC series and also has a CBS version that's... exactly the same with different cast and 3 seasons behind. Both good.

One of the things I really like about this episode is that it makes the Daleks feel like a real threat again. For much of Moffatt’s run Daleks came across as more comical than dangerous. Much like in S01E06 you get the feeling this single Dalek could easily take on the entire planet and win - casing or no casing. It’s also one the best holiday specials out there (though I generally regard it as the true series 11 finale).

Agreed. It's why someone like Nyssa still feels like she's an actual part of the story, even when the writer's hands are tied with too many companions, but Yaz just fades into the background, even if she's on-screen a big chunk of the time. Poor Yaz -- you deserve better! 😦

Nicole Mazza

100% agree with this whole comment. (Nyssa is one of my favs as well.) I do feel like the reason she's separated from the Doctor's group, is that there isn't enough for her to DO if she were there. You only need so many reaction shots, or "Doctor, what about ____?" It totally ended up working in her favor, character-wise, but the things she did on her own were specifically because there were too many companions. They just covered it well, and made good use of it. (Something they usually failed to do with Yaz.)

To be fair to Nyssa, one thing I always love about her is that while she's separated from the Doctor and TARDIS Team, she still gets important sh!t done. Like, oftentimes she'll go to the lab in her bedroom, build/create something, and help save the day in the end. It's why she's one of my faves, personally. She's still a hero, even without the Doctor having to hold her hand the whole way. ❤️ And Nyssa definitely has an emotional arc in the show -- at least more than we've seen with Yaz so far. Now, did they not go into 'enough' with the feels around Nyssa's loss of her dad and people and all that trauma (which I won't go into, because spoilers) on the show? No, unfortunately they didn't, but, also TV was different back then. BUT with Yaz's under-development under Chibnall's watch, I honestly think there's little excuses for it these days, especially when taking into account a modern audience's expectations. 🤷‍♀️

Nicole Mazza

One of Chibs best episodes. As Paula said, some great acting in this too. Even the real GCHQ posted to Twitter the day after it was shown on TV with tongue in cheek message to say they were doing well after the Dalek invasion and normal service would resume 🤪🤪

I've posted in comments on prior episodes about my own issues with Chibnall's run, but I have none about this episode, which I see as unambiguously the best of this season. I don't think it's a coincidence that it's a Dalek episode that hits the high point: although there have been poor Dalek stories over the show's long history, for the most part there's a very good reason why they were the breakout villains from the very first. I don't think it's any exaggeration to say it was the Daleks that kept the series on the air past its first season or so back in the 60s. The Doctor and The Daleks— on some level that will always be the heart of what keeps Dr Who going.

I am just loving going through Jodie's run with the gals!

I was under the impression that even people who didn't like S11 liked this special. Can't believe it's so low on Rotten Tomatoes! I still feel that the way Chibnall wrote this series, three companions were too many. I think poor Yaz's character development suffered at the hands of Ryan's and Graham's. Sure, we got one Yaz-centric episode (which I LOVE), but she's mostly a background character the rest of the series. She's a police officer, but we almost never get to use her skills or knowledge. She's basically the same person at the end of the series as the beginning. The more companions, the more tricky it is to have them all doing something that has meaning. Even in Classic Who (in which stories would run two hours or more) three could be a lot at times, and sometimes you just had the one companion hanging in the Tardis while the rest went out with the Doctor. (*cough*Nyssa*cough*) There are definitely ways to fit three companions into an episode, we've seen Moffat and RTD do it successfully when they needed to. But in S11 I don't think Chibnall did, most of the time.

Firefly24601

Been so ready for this episode! Love, love, love it! Of course 13 versus the Dalek is terrifying and amazing with how she tackles the problems it presents in her own unique way but I always appreciate the amount of character growth Ryan shows in the cafe scene. I love how Graham and his experience with the Doctor helped him come to terms with his issues towards his dad will being able to realize that reaching out and giving someone a chance is important. Gives me goosebumps every time! Also, love how the recon scout building it's casing parallels 13 building her sonic!
