The Witchfinders, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! S11Ep8

First, I didn't say that everyone who complains about Chibnal's writing is a mysoginst. Rather, I said that a lot of the mysogynists jumped on the anti-Chibnal writing bandwagon. Lots of people who are not mysoginsts hate the writing in the Chibnal series. Second, I agree that the best episodes in S11-13 are not written by Chibnal. But that's not, in itself, a problem. In my opinion, the best episodes of S1-4 were not written by RTD, and some of the worst episodes of those series were written by RTD. A good showrunner isn't necessarily the best writer, they're someone who knows how to get the best out of their writers. RTD could do that. Now, S11 is far from perfect, but it's not that bad, either. If S12 and S13 were good, then we'd remember S11 as a good start to Chibnal's run. But because S12 and S13 were, well, what they were, then S11 looks different in retrospect. At least that's what I think. When S11 was on the air, there was a lot less grumbling about it than there is now.

I have to reply to this... Chibnals run as a whole is a mess, the biggest ***** the franchise had since Turner started his campagne against Tom Baker. to 1: The writing for seasons11-13 was BAD. The best episodes are the NOT written by Chibnal. Thats a bad sign for a showrunner. Also he wastes so much on Jodies performance. She is such a good actress and has good moments, but it doesnt really click .... and no im not mysogynistic, because i like S12x5 that scene inside the Tardis clicks on the spot. Thats how you write a character. Cant say more without spoiler but you know what i mean. I really really hope Jodie gets the chance to work with Big Finish, giving her storys, written by people who care about the show. C.C. did most of the things simply because he was doing his best Rian Johnson impression. 2. No it wasnt retrospect, it was clear from the get go, were this was going. Which is not a bad idea. The "Cartmel masterplan" is around since 1987. However this was the worst possible way to execute it. There is a reason they brought back RTD and gave him absolute control over the show. You cant retcon 60years of franchise and later retcon the retcon or worst like Flux, never mention it again. Thats bad story telling. The latest episode Seadevils was a really good episode but it got plotpoints for at least a 5 episodes storyarc.

This was the first episode of Chibnall's run that really had a "I'm watching Doctor Who" vibe for me, perhaps because it got cheesy at times with King James. Series 12 is mostly good, but while series 13 has its moments, it is quite a mess overall in my opinion. Jodie's a good Doctor, it's Chibnall's writing that I have issues with.

I can't give specifics without being spoilery, but I think the reputation for bad writing for S11 has two main sources 1- the anti-Josie crowd finding a way to complain about the series that doesn't get them accused of the mysogyny that's really behind their dislike of 13. And 2- The seeds of some of the issues that plagued the later series becoming more obvious in retrospect. It's sort of a bit like the critiques of Moffet - if you just look at S5, it's really hard to justify most of the critiques. But once you've seen the later series then you can find evidence in S5 as well. For what it's worth, I loved S11 when I first saw it, and I'm enjoying it a lot on rewatch.

This one's a mixed bag for me. I like a lot about it but it feels very exposition-y especially toward the end. The performances are good though. I love Siobhan Finneran (she's great in Happy Valley!) and of course Alan Cumming. Special shout-out for scene-stealing performance goes to Graham's hat!! In general I went into S11 trying to be as open-minded as possible because of all the obvious misogyny etc (I was about a year late to it so it already had that reputation). So I was pre-disposed to try to like it to spite the NMDs. Where I've ended now is that I enjoy a lot of it but it's not my favourite. Some of that is the writing. I do miss the speeches 12 got, and I think dialogue in general is a weakness of Chibnall. Not that it's bad just often a bit flat. But he does have strengths. Next episode is a favourite of mine. Be curious to see if you like it.

Alien mud and religious nutcases?.... yeah its a miss from me. Every Doctor did make speeches pretty much all the time.. now they are rare and not that well written when they do :/ Something i noticed during this episode which id been trying to put my finger on for a while; 13 always tells everyone exactly what she and the gang are going to do.."im gunna do this, you and you are going to do this but dont do this and meet back here in x" and it always works.. nothing seems to not go to plan. Part of the fun of previous Doctors for me was that you never knew what they were going to do, companions would wander off from eachother and have to adapt to their surroundings to natrually come together in the end. It sometimes didnt always work, but it always was unexpected. For me, this stlye of storytelling "tell dont show" takes that away completely and makes me feel like im watching story beats rather than being transported along for the ride for an alien encounter with these cool characters. Maybe thats just me, and im weird, but i really miss that aspect of the show. Thats a minor personal critisism though and not really to do with the story; that wont come till later

Yes, King James really was obsessed with witches. It’s part of the reason there was such a big uptick in witch trials n the early 17th Century. They did a good job in this episode summarizing his quite oppressive and tragic upbringing, which very much influenced his attitude. He also had a penchant for traveling the country in disguise to find out what his subjects were up to (another symptom of his paranoia), and there are numerous folk songs about that. And then there was the fact he liked surrounding himself with handsome young men (thus his attraction to Ryan).

This series rewatching is going a bit better than when I watched the first run broadcasts so hoping for a bounce on the next series as well. There are good episodes and interesting places/times still to come. Watching first time I kept hoping that Jodie's doctor didn't have to keep so much back from her companions as it keeps the Fam' from really gelling. For example, at this stage I don't think the companions know anything about the doctor, not even her age. May be I'll keep enjoying the standalone stories and be glad of what we do get to explore of what the doctor and the companions think of and see in each other. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Truer words...

It's a good episode, but the solution let it's down a bit. Seems to be building well, like the story and the performances but I do think "the hill is a prison" lets it down a bit. Series 11 overall is enjoyable.

TheHimble

I'm so SO happy you're enjoying this series more than I did on my first watch. For this particular episode, I think the sudden plot change mid-episode from an otherworldly, philosophical story to a oh-its-just-plain-aliens story was a bit jarring for me. On the plus side, phenomenal performances by the guest cast; Tricia Kelly having to play both a kind grandmother and a super-evil witch/alien, Siobhan Finneran in her usual evil/scheming/backstabber role, and Alan Cumming stealing the show with his interpretation of King James.

Firefly24601

This episode first time round was not what I was expecting. I had an image of King James in my mind that did not include all this witch hunting stuff. So I had to do a lot of googling to find out that this stuff "really" happened. But everytime I rewatch this episode it gets better. Some of it may be the actors dragging more out of the dialogue than is actually in there. But I think this is a really strong season. And every time I rewatch it, I see things that will resonate down through the seasons that of course I couldn't notice first time through. But it's brilliant how much Chibnall has planned out in advance that won't land for ages yet.

Bob Hughes

The writing in Series 11 was fine. Just wait.

Scribbles

This has some of my favorite 13 moments. That speech to King James is wonderful (even if he didn't buy it) and her standing up to Becka never fails to give me goosebumps! I really relate to Ryan and Yaz as characters as well. The backstory we get on their lives before the Doctor is a big reason why plus some things to come I won't spoil. Yaz and the fact she dealt with bullies so heavily, making a promise to herself to be brave and stand up to those types of people one day. Ryan because of his personal issues and relationships, hits very close to home (though that doesn't stop him from stepping up). Really glad you all are enjoying this era, excited for the rest!
