Imaginary Friend, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S5Ep22

I had ten imaginary brothers... And so my sister had ten sisters... We made our parents put twenty imaginary kids in the back of the car...

Dan Williams

I think that might have been a cut in the actual episode footage. Isabella fully disappears and then the episode cuts to a shot of the other child's reaction. It might be that during the HD upgrade Paramount cut the episode slightly differently? Generally, the Gals only cut episode footage for YouTube, not Patreon.

Firefly24601

Hey, I found someone who is doing Venture Bros reactions, and also Archer too. His Patreon channel is "The Goosh!". He just started season two of Archer yesterday and is just over halfway through season 2 of VB. The only problem with the latter is he only does one episode a month for that show so my concern is with all the continuity and history building, he might not remember enough to get the all the call backs and stuff. Like when he saw Molotov in "Assassinanny 911" he seemed to have forgotten they showed her twice before. Otherwise though he has great reactions to it. He should be reacting to "Fallen Arches" soon.

The cut was a second or two too quick, but as Isabella disappears in the last scene she gives Clara a very genuine smile.

Another story might take place a couple decades later when there are friendly relations with the nebula beings. An adult Clara arrives in the area and introduces "Isabella" to her husband and children, including a newborn named after her best friend.

Mark Chrisco

Badda Boom Badda Bing!!! What is this? Vic Fontaine's place in the Holodeck. Like someone else pointed out already, the girls father was said to have moved around to different ships. That suggests at least a couple of years. That he is still an 'Ensign' looks very bad. LOL!!!

Sal Sanchez

Yeah it's one of those episodes that are similar to others without much depth, but I also understand that writing and filming 26 episodes a year is quite a task as well.

The ceramics class reminds me of I think it was 7th grade art class where we got to do ceramics. Everyone else made cups or ashtrays, standard stuff. I made a minotaur statue. It came out fine but was fragile after it was fired.

DarkAshtar

This episode isn't that memorable, but I do like the themes presented and that child actors get to flex a little. There's another episode featuring children in season 6 that I'm looking forward to.

This was another good TNG foray into horror. If I might suggest some informal theme music for Paula’s cat, how about “I Love You So Much (It’s Scary)” from Bob’s Burgers? The lyrics are perfect. “My teeth are extra sharp; my body’s extra hairy.” Also, just subscribed to the podcast. Looking forward to some binge listening.

Bit of an unusual and unremarkable episode for me. It more resembles a Season 1 or 2 episode in that it doesn't really focus on any one character, as in it's not clearly a Geordi story or a Riker story etc. like the they've tended to be since S3. I think at this point Micheal Piller was starting to step away as showrunner a bit, so there was a bit more experimentation with that formula. Noley Thorton one of those rare child actors that manages to seem a natural character. With a lot of young actors I find they tend to show the seams of their performance. Alexander for example isn't quiiiiite there. Just needed more experience and time. Plus, I think I have a bias towards Noley Thorton based on her name, lol. She guest appears in a DS9 episode and was good in that too. Not much else to say in this one, really.

Nolan

Star Trek: The Isabella Stories, coming summer 2023 to pirate sites everywhere.

Yes I did have an imaginary friend as a child called "Blue Aid", creeped out my sister .

ian webster

"You and your redrum bullshit..." 🤣🤣🤣

Bill

Another bit of trivia; Shay Astar was in the 1991 film "Ernest Scared Stupid" (the year before this episode aired). Hm; I could really go for some Authentic Bulgarian Miak right about now...

Alexander Caldwell

Also, bit of trivia; Noley Thornton has a later, equally endearing guest appearance in a DS9 episode ("Shadowplay").

Alexander Caldwell

Oooh man we're in the home stretch now. Next few weeks are gonna be great!

AdmiralKnight

Shay Astar's performance as Isabella really creeped me out when I was a kid (saw the episode when it first aired in '92); probably because I'm the same age as Noley Thornton (Clara Sutter), and could relate to her character's predicament at the time. She was just too damn sweet and innocent to be terrorized by a conjured being like that (bullies are no fun to be around, even if they are made of highly focused plasma strands). Regardless; pretty good performances from the child actors in this one.

Alexander Caldwell

Good point. I believe in the real military, once you reach a certain officer rank you're basically required to be promoted through your career. And in some cases someone retires if they're passed over for promotion so many times.

Joe Concepts

The only thing that has bugged me over the years is that Clara's father has the rank of Ensign. It's more likely than not, he would have rose above that station is his many years in starfleet. Specialist, Chief or even civilian would have been better.

Mark Chrisco

"Sure, check the closet, turn your back. Oops!" Great advice Gals! Anyway, great point about the ending, Katrina. I did have an imaginary friend, but he eventually ran away from home.

Mark Ten

The poor actor playing Isabella, I think she got typecast as a super-serious no-fun character. She played a similar type of expressionless, manipulative, and self-serving role in her tweens/teens on "Third Rock from the Sun."

Firefly24601

There've been a number of "Imaginary Friend Is Real" stories across science fiction over the decades. I always find them especially creepy, because of a bit of my own history: My sister and I had a shared imaginary friend called Elizabeth when we were 4-5 years old, and I still remember what she looked like. I can specifically remember particular things she did and said. In fact I had no idea she was imaginary, and not just an early-childhood friend, until my Mom happened to mention it one time, long after I was an adult. And that's just all kinds of creepy when seeing an episode like this and thinking "Why do I remember SEEING her? What was that about!?"

Keith Goodnight

The actor playing Alexander was the second child actor to portray him. The first actor to play Alexander joined a punk band after high school. He later became a bartender and opened a vegan restaurant in Portland. He passed away on New Year's Day in 2018 from a self-inflicted wound at the age of 33.

August King

How the hell does Whoopi Goldberg elevate every scene she's in? I can't wait till next week.

Eric

I always thought it would be neat if there was a follow-up many years later with an adult Clara now serving as a science officer aboard a starship that revisits the nebula. We then see a light approach the ship and young Isabella appears. Clara smiles and says, "Hello, old friend". Isabella smiles back and notes that Clara is all grown up now and shifts into an adult version of Isabella.
