Comments

Yes, I agree that this episode is too dark, and not just in tone. As well as the death toll, I've never been a fan of the 'cyberpunk' night time in the big city visuals of this.

Paul Flux

Just want to say I love your reactions and will enjoy watching this era with you even though I find it my least favourite of NuWho. My view on the era (for what its worth) is that I think Jodie really convinces as the Doctor, some of the stories are very good, some aren't (but isn't that the case for most of Who), it's the overall story arcs and direction I don't like.

Martyn Hill

Yeah i definitely had issues with the depiction of dyspraxia as the show went on. Just having it mentioned was a massive step forward in and of itself for a depiction of dyspraxia though. I will say what my problems are with how Ryan's dyspraxia was treated as and when the issues show up in these videos so I won't get into them now, in order to avoid spoiling anyone. Just from this episode alone, the idea that i or anyone with dyspraxia would sit on the edge of a steep drop, like Ryan and co do after he throws his bike away early on, is laughable in the extreme. We trip up over our own feet a hell of a lot on completely flat surfaces with no obstacles. There's no way in hell we're going near a potentially unstable cliff edge.

Aaron Funnell

I'm kinda curious how you feel about the execution of Ryan's dyspraxia going forward. I hesitate to write this because it could kind of be considered spoilers, so if Paula's reading this, she should probably stop. This episode was the first time I learned about dyspraxia, and I thought it would be a really interesting character trait, especially in this show where the characters have to do a lot of physically challenging things. It would have been really interesting to see Ryan struggling to do certain things he needed to in order to help the Doctor, like climbing the ladder in this episode (except with increasing stakes). But I feel like the show just kind of forgot about Ryan's dyspraxia after this episode. I feel like I could count on one hand the number of times it comes up again (thought, I admit my knowledge on this era is far from encyclopedic). Did you feel like the show utilized it well? Either way, I suppose it did succeed in spreading awareness.

Jacob D'Amour

Completely agree!

I really only fell off watching Jodie only because it became a pain in the ass to watch without pirating because of all rights stuff early in her run. By the time it was easy I has already found you gals and decided to wait lol.

Hopefully Paula and Katrina, and all the patrons here, won't mind me giving a pretty lengthy personal perspective on one, relatively minor, aspect of this era of Doctor Who. In case there is anyone reading who doesn't know, dyspraxia is most often seen as a co-ordination disorder that primarily affects fine and gross motor skills. Riding a bike would be an example of gross motor skills, writing with a pen would be an example of fine motor skills. There are other symptoms though. Organisational skills can be impaired, time management can be an issue and there are often concentration difficulties. Like the character of Ryan, I have dyspraxia. I'm 34 so i grew up in a time where there was much less awareness of the disorder, even amongst teachers in schools. I was diagnosed at 14. Until that point, i was viewed as lazy. In Year 6 at school (i was aged 11 but I'm not sure how that correlates to North American schools) i was told i was "bone idle" by my teacher on a virtual daily basis. I was always slow to complete work due to my handwriting difficulties. It was only through my mum having started a job working as a teaching assistant in a different school that i eventually got assessed and diagnosed with dyspraxia. If not for her job, it probably would never have been picked up. Seeing a character be stated to have dyspraxia in my favourite TV show means so much to me now, as an adult. Raising more awareness of this disorder in such a high profile show can only help dyspraxic kids be identified and supported much earlier than i was. I can only imagine how much less alone children with dyspraxia felt when watching this episode, and seeing Ryan go through similar struggles to them but still persevering must mean a great deal. This is the very first time I've seen dyspraxia referenced in any fiction ive come across, and i guess i just want to say that the representation matters.

Aaron Funnell

I had forgotten about Jodie describing regeneration, that was a great moment. Followed by the bonkers child voice "This will be fun" 🤪🤪

Sufyaan Kazi

Now that I have seen "tomb of the cybermen" with the gals, I noticed that the doctor speech about her family, is very similar to what the second doctor said in that episode.

tal goren

I actually prefer this series to the most recent one. Just a couple of episodes I don't like. But you can't always like everything.

Mr K

Nice

Matt

1) I liked Jodis Doctor from the get go. First Doctor, that I liked from their very first episode. But she's not my favorite Doctor. That's still Tennant with Capaldi being a close second. 2) Fridging is such a bad TV/Movie trope. It doesn't sit well with me 99 out of 100 times. On rare occasions it works, but this wasn't one of them. I know that it had to happen, because character arcs and Grace being to similar to the Doctor to work as a companion. But it was still cheap. 3) Like most episodes of this season I think it's decent. A few outstanding good episodes in here and no really bad one this season imo.

Red Claw

Interesting. I know that was an issue with series 10, but I’m pretty sure series 11 here in Aus didn’t have any next time previews (or at least not early in the credits) - only, as you say, the guest star list at the end of episode 1. I think they did reasonably well not spoiling anything for Jodi’s series (so much so people were complaining about not having any news about what was coming up - some folks just can’t be pleased either way). In any case, thanks for all you do for making this happen with Kat and Paula.

Lloyd B

All the episodes have a Next Time trailer late in the credits, which is omitted from the recordings they watch. The first episode also had the same type of Guest Star list that spoiled me for John Simm in Series 10.

Firefly24601

Thanks Firefly. From memory, I think the first episode may have had a sort of “next time” sequence late in the closing credits, but it only showed glimpses of the guest stars for future episodes - nothing plot related. But that’s fine. So long as they can see the credits for episode 6, which I think is mesmerizing and beautiful.

Lloyd B

The closing credits weren't skipped by the Gals. It was purposely omitted from the video they watched.

Firefly24601

By the way, you skipped the closing credits and new theme arrangement. Fortunately in this series Chibnall learnt the lessons of past seasons by not having spoilery next time trailers inserted immediately into the closing credits. You’ll get to hear the new theme and intro visuals next time, and I’ll be keen to hear what you think. Also, the closing theme for episode 6 really must be listened to!

Lloyd B

I freely admit watching you two watch Capaldi made me appreciate his performance 20 times more than I had before. Until now I'd only liked the "Husbands of River Song" and not much else from him. Now, after having watched you react to a lot of the "little moments" of his series, I appreciate him a lot more. So I hope you'll make me like Jodi Whitaker (who I otherwise really like) more than I did the first time I watched her first series.

Joe

I really like this episode and feel it’s a great opener for the series and Jodi’s Doctor. I do agree, though, that there’s a very high mortality rate, and Grace’s loss is particularly hard, as she would have made an outstanding companion. Still, Bradley Walsh is great as Graham, and I think Paula will come to love him. I know a lot of people just think of Walsh as a comedian and game show host, but the couple of things I’ve seen him act in demonstrate he’s an excellent actor with outstanding range. He’s also plaid a villain in a couple of Sarah Jane Adventures episodes (almost unrecognizable) - yet another reason you Gals should watch SJA!! (I’ll continue to get my plugs in for SJA reactions at every opportunity 😊). Looking forward to the journey with 13.

Lloyd B

Yay! I love Jody's run, and the companions. It's not perfect, but no season of Who (even classic) have been perfect. Strap in Paula, it's gonna be a ride!

Bill

This was a superb episode, Jodie was great 👍🏼

Sufyaan Kazi

River showed that a woman can fly the TARDIS better than the doctor.

Carl Breindel

I think this is one of the best season openers! I love the energy and I adore Jodie here

Einar Sigurðsson

Ok so I haven't even watched the reaction yet but I'm so excited you've finally reached this episode. Partly because I like that you finally get to see Jodie. But mainly it's because this episode is personally special to me as Chibnall decided to set it in my home town of Sheffield (instead of london or Cardiff). We're a city who often get overlooked, people tend to know citys like manchester and york instead (our biggest claim to on screen fame is probably Sean Bean and The Full Monty). So when Chibnall decided to have the new companions be from Sheffield I was over the moon. Especially since I actually recognized a lot of the locations used in the episode.

The0therSyde

I've never really loved this episode. It's OK and it has some nice things but for me it's a bit meh overall. I like Jodie but I'm not 100% on board with how she portrays the Doctor. It's not helped by the fact that Chibnall gives her giant gobs of exposition to explain the plot of the episode. Also, and this is not the show's fault, but Graham is played by a comedian and game show host, Bradley Walsh. He's actually pretty good as an actor but I can never quite lose the sense of his other persona. It's interesting because a lot of non-UK folks really love Graham. I do like that they shot it in Sheffield - makes me nostalgic for when I lived there. I also like the humour in the dialogue. Even based on what we've seen so far I like Graham, Yaz and Ryan. I like that it's not Doctor+one companion. BUT - and maybe it's cos I am old, but I hate with a fiery passion that she calls them "fam".

LatePaul

Yeah, Ryan should've tried learning on a flat(ter) surface, like in a car-park/parking-lot or something. That terrain he was on was an unnecessary challenge for him -- great views, but not the best choice. 🤷‍♀️ (Also, I agree about Grace. I wish we'd gotten her instead of Graham.)

Nicole Mazza

Agreed. 😦

Nicole Mazza

Every time I watch this episode over it's better than the last time. The one thing I will say about future Chibnall is he throws out incredibly long tendrills. Plot threads will take forever to land. But every time you watch this episode again you get to start crying from the first scene instead of waiting till the end. (And I think Tim Shaw the Bluetooth monster is hilarious.) (Next episode is better, and the one after that is even better. )

Bob Hughes

Also, still REAAAAAAAALLY upset about Grace being fridged in the very first episode. Not only does fridging suck, but they got BINGO with it being an older black woman (as older women, women in general, and POCs really don't fair well on telly in such situations). Anyway, she was my fave. RIP. 😭😭

Nicole Mazza

I'm no fan of Chris Chibnall's time as showrunner, but no danger that I'll stop following your reactions, any more than I stopped following the show itself. I'm an old school fan since the late 1970s when PBS started showing the Fourth Doctor's episodes in the US; I stayed loyal during the really bad years in the 80s (which at the lowest were far worse than any mistake Chibnall made), I stayed loyal through disliking Chibnall's run, and I'll stay loyal through whatever comes next for the show, good or bad. Oh, I'll complain about it when the show's not good and I'll focus on hoping it'll get better, but I'll stay with it. And I'll stay with your reactions as well, interested to see how you feel about the new era. Geronimo!

Keith Goodnight

"The Reverse Titanic" sounds like... something else. :D

Firefly24601

Who learns to ride a bike on top of a cliff! Grace was awesome and I wish she had become the companion.

Mark Ten

I seriously can't watch this story without getting this song in my head: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLkzJfXYXmU (nothing spoiler-y, just a fanvid that makes a song from this episode) <3

Nicole Mazza

I didn't think a Doctor could top Matt Smith for me, but Jodie is my new favourite Doctor. So hyped you're starting her run :)

vaelerius

I really like the first series with Jodie. Has some lows but overall I thought the stories were good. As an old man I care less about the creatures, etc as long as the story is good. After this series though I don't like where Chris Chibnall takes the story and feel the Doctor is inconsistently written. It's not as bad as some people will say, but certainly not my favourite of the story arcs.

TheHimble

I will watch along and will only say/write this once... I feel the writing, design of creatures and overall direction of the run is what has caused what some are referring to as the downfall of doctor who. Jodie does her best and even has some good moments throughout her run but I feel that ultimately due to the above causes that this is the most disappointing of the doctors runs. There it is said I won't harp on any further about it in anymore videos.

A C PARNELL

Really excited! Been looking forward to this!
