Terror of The Autons Ep1-2, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! Classic!

Comments

This story received a lot of complaints when it was first shown. Producer Barry Letts said that Parents thought that their children would have nightmares about the troll doll and that their teddy bears would grow fangs and claws and attack them in the night. Also the Auton policemen would frighten children and stop them from approaching a policeman if they needed help.

Davrob

You might recognise the actor Roy Stewart who played Tony the strongman, he also played Toberman in The Tomb Of The Cybermen.

I believe even John Simm realized his earlier portrayal of the Master was too over the top, which is why his performance in The Doctor Falls was much more muted and restrained. Simm’s a fine actor, and I think if he’d played the Master in series 3 and 4 the way he did the the series 10 finale he would have been appreciated more.

Lloyd B

Lloyd -- Oh, god, I looooved her in SJA with Lis Sladen. They were perfect together! <3

Well from what I saw, a big reason for the exile and lack of showing the inside of the Tardis was down to it being in such bad condition that a lot of it had started to rot away. There was just not enough money in the budget to fix it up.

The reason why the Master and Doctor worked so good was Pertwee and Delgardo been best friends in real life. After Delgardo died in the car crash, Pertwee quit the show. Said he couldnt keep on without his friend.

There's been a lot of uncertainty as to why the series did the "Exiled to Earth" era. It's actually an intriguing mystery (at least to a certain sort of obsessed fan like me) because contemporary sources will cite different reasons, and any modern article on it will reach different conclusions depending on who they happened to interview. The exilr was set in place by the departing showrunner of the Patrick Troughton era, Derrick Sherwin, but why? The two most common explanations over the years have been because stories set on Earth were cheaper to produce, or that stories set on Earth had higher ratings. But Doctor Who Magazine dug into the history in an article some years ago and discovered neither of those things were true. Of course, that doesn't mean Derrick Sherwin (or perhaps execs higher up in the BBC) couldn't have mistakenly *believed* one or the other, and based the decision on that. But there are other possibilities. Although stories-on-Earth did not have higher ratings than other stories, Dr Who as a whole was in a ratings slump at the end of the Second Doctor era and came near to cancellation. The Exile to Earth could have been set up to act as a series finale if it wasn't renewed. Or it could be that the producers felt shaking up the format was the best way to bump up ratings in general. For that, it's worth noting that the premise of the Doctor working for UNIT puts the series into the same genre as a number of then-popular spy series running on the BBC at the time (one of which had a protagonist costumed exactly like the Third Doctor's style), plus of course the James Bond movies then at their peak popularity. "Hop on board the trend" may have been the real reason. Whatever the real reason, the new showrunners for the Third Doctor era, producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks, did NOT like the exile to Earth but the higher-ups did not allow them to just resolve it right away. They had to spend several seasons gradually shifting back to the show's original format, which they did by having the Time Lords occasionally send the Doctor on a mission somewhere, before finally having him get control of the TARDIS back. By that time the style of the Third Doctor era was so firmly set that even when his exile was lifted, he tended to take a short trip away from Earth for one story and then back for another UNIT adventure. Only after regenerating to the Fourth Doctor did he fully resume his wandering ways.

Hi Nicole. Absolutely agree re Liz Shaw. Not only intelligent, but sharp witted and ballsy. She also wasn’t shy of taking the Doctor down a notch or two if needed! No doubt that scared the producers somewhat. I too was a little lackluster on Jo back in the day, but have really grown to appreciate her on rewatch. Katy Manning is such a delight (and spoiler …. Her appearance in the Sarah Jane Adventures was a real treat, seeing her alongside Lis Sladen ).

Lloyd B

I've grown to love Jo Grant over the years (especially as Katy Manning is such a ball of sunshine!), but it was definitely hard for me to move on from Liz Shaw, who I find incredibly underrated! (I'd love to see Liz up against the Master, btw! It'd likely be a battle of who's the smartest!)

Nicole Mazza

Mark -- Same! The Third Doctor had the best vehicles! <3

Nicole Mazza

Loved the Whomobile too

Mark Ten

The original Doctor/Master relationship is closer to Holmes/Moriarty. Spoiler - - - - The show was facing another cancellation threat at the end of Pertwee's run and there was a plan to reveal that the Doctor and Master were half brothers and to do a finale based on Reichenbach Falls where the show ends without revealing which one survives. That way if Doctor Who was cancelled - well - ultimate unresolved cliff hanger. Sadly Roger Delgado was killed before filming and an entirely different story was commissioned... Oh yeah, the show was renewed and the Doctor regenerated - big spoiler, that.

On the topic of sexual and racial stereotypes, Classic Who has a mixed history. There are examples of people of colour getting positive roles in stories throughout the 60s and 70s, but there are also stories like this where the writers fall back on those old stereotypes. The final 1st Doctor story has quite a multicultural cast for the time, including a black man who is a rather heroic astronaut; the 2nd Doctor story Enemy of the World had a strong black female character; and a later 3rd Doctor story The Mutants had another heroic black male character - and in none of these stories was their race even mentioned, they were just good, well rounded characters. At the same time, though, there is a 4th Doctor story where the villain is an Asian character played by white man in makeup, and has some troubling Asian stereotypes (great story, though). As for Jo, the producers decided to drop the previous companion, Liz Shaw, because they felt she was too intelligent, so they aimed for a “dumb blonde” who would ask all the questions. However, Katy Manning makes Jo a great character - very resourceful as well as compassionate and loyal.

Lloyd B

I <3 Michael Wisher! (And as much as I love other versions of Davros, he's the definitive version to me)

Nicole Mazza

Yeah, that's why the Simm!Master never worked for me, personally. He just felt so different than the Classic Who Masters -- who is arguably a bit nuts, but more calculated. He's definitely the Moriarty to the Doctor back then. They're two halves of the same coin.

Nicole Mazza

Yes, sadly I believe the real reason was budget ? But it gave them a chance to build a great dynamic between Pertwee and his pal Roger Delgado as the Master. Hence a whole lot of Master vs Doctor on earth during Pertwee's era, not just this story

Sufyaan Kazi

Also, BESSIE!!! I <3 the Third Doctor's yellow car, Bessie! (And yes, as some people above said, the TARDIS is out-of-order currently, as the Time Lords have exiled the Doctor to Earth, took out the mechanism to make the TARDIS work and wiped the Doctor's memories of how to fix or fly it, so he's stranded. That's why he's working at UNIT at this point -- as their Chief Scientific Officer.)

Nicole Mazza

Also, I'm not gonna lie, the Death-By-Plastic-Chair scene is one of my favorite scenes in ALL OF CLASSIC WHO! <3 <3 P.S. And yay, we've not only got the Master, but we've got his old weapon: the TCE (the Tissue Compression Eliminator), which shrinks people. Such a terrible way to die! Gooch's miniaturized dead body in his own lunchbox is so comical and dark at the same time!

Nicole Mazza

The BEST Master (but not the best Missy) <3 For most of Pertwee's era The Doctor was stranded on Earth as punishment by the Timelords and he spent quite a bit of time trying to use UNIT tech to manufacture a replacement dematerialization circuit for his TARDIS. Some absolutely fantastic episodes and companions. Thank you both for this <3

Bill

Ooh, this is going to be so much fun! I love-love-love this serial! And Delgado is truly my great love -- as much as I love Missy, no one compares to his Master, IMO. <3 P.S. Just started watching, so I noticed -- at least at this point -- you don't remember the Autons. You actually saw them waaaaay back in your first modern Who story, 'Rose', with all that jazz of the mannequins that came to life and the Nestene Consciousness. <3

Nicole Mazza

Although there's never a dull moment in this story, its very ridiculousness (which must have been pretty evident at the time!) rather works against it. However,if a viewer goes into it with the correct frame of mind,it's a fun ride - and Delgado's presence makes it work. It's prequel,Spearhead from space,is much better though.

Time Lord

The Doctor couldn't take his TARDIS to the circus because the TARDIS doesn't work— during this era of the series, the Time Lords had exiled the Doctor to Earth, disabling the TARDIS so he couldn't leave. He took a job with UNIT as their scientific advisor in exchange for facilities to try and repair it. Meanwhile, he uses "Bessie," his yellow car (which he has souped up in various ways we occasionally see). It was Jon Pertwee's idea that if the Doctor was deprived of the TARDIS, he'd have a love for other novelty forms of transport. Trivia note: the actor playing the younger Farrel (the factory owner under the Master's control) is Michael Wisher, who will go on to play several different roles in various stories through the seventies, most notably one you've already seen: under the heavy mask, he's the one playing Davros in "Genesis of the Daleks."

Keith Goodnight

One of the reasons I felt ambiguous about John Simm in series 3, was the craziness. he just didn't feel like the Master to me. but since Derek Jacobi acted like a perfect Master once he opened the watch, I fan wanked that the craziness was retconned into the Master's past in the moment he stole the Doctor's Tardis and put himself on the path that would lead to him being useful to the time lords in "end of time".

Link isn't working for me unfortunately.

Duncan Hart

green screen and blue screen are different technologies? what makes blue screen more advance?

tal goren

I think the Vimeo link you have under the video is broken. It's not working for me. Jo has an interesting character arc where she's introduced as only being there because of her family connections, but by her last episode she's more than proven herself and earned everyone's respect. Her goodbye scene is, I think, one of the saddest in Who history. There is a lot of green screen during the Pertwee era, and almost all of it is awful.

Dan Crucy

Blue screen hadn't been invented yet. This is green screen, or maybe yellow. I think this was the first time the BBC ever used this.

Bob Hughes

I imagine there will be quite a few comments about this. 😂

Mr K

Imagine James Bond's grandfather and you got Petwee's Doctor. Anyway, this Doctor was exiled to Earth by the TimeLords for interfering in other cultures and his Tardis no longer works. That device that Jo set the extinguiser on (and the Doctor stole from the Master's Tardis is the dematerialization circuit - same thing Missy had in The Doctor falls that John Simms needed to fix his Tardis. .h In spite of this very "dickish" start, Jo & Doctor became very close. Even the Master liked her. Didnt stop him from trying to kill her quite often.

Mark Ten

Terror of the Autons is a great story and superb introduction for new companion Jo and the Master, but it isn't quite the origin story for the Autons. That was the previous season's opener, Spearhead From Space which was also the third Doctor's first story.
