Twice Upon A Time, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! S10Ep13

Comments

It's basically the template for NuWho, as Moffat wrote it.

Troy Convers

The only Doctor who's first and last scenes were falling out of the TARDIS.

Troy Convers

None of the classic Doctors had a big concluding speech as such but to me Jon Pertwee's 3rd incarnation had the most emotional last words.

Dr Q Who

Ditto.

mark saunders

Me too.

mark saunders

Loved the reaction as always. As others have mentioned Hugh Grant DID play the Doctor in a Comic Relief spoof - The Curse Of Fatal Death written by Moffatt and Produced by Richard Curtis who wrote Vincent & The Doctor. Very funny - lots of timey wimey wibbly wobbly humour and well worth a watch. You can watch it here. https://youtu.be/tp_Fw5oDMao There's also a fascinating behind the scenes documentary. Again well worth a watch. https://youtu.be/mI-RDN0bvL4

In the late '80s, Paramount thought about making a Dr Who movie with Michael Jackson as the Doctor, FFS. Other truly stupid ideas included a talking Tardis, voiced by Pamela Anderson and her animated lips sort of hovering over the top of the console.. The Who-niverse doesn't need the demented input of overpaid Hollywood executives.

Chris Padwick

Pretty much agree. I loved the teacher/student vibe with 12 & Bill so I really loved S10 at the time. Especially after all the Clara stuff and taking a long time to warm to 12. Don't like it so much now although those last 3 episodes are among my favourites. ( S9 is now my fav or Capadi's although s8 is my least fav of all new Who) That teacher/ student vibe appeared a couple of times in classic and worked wel there as well.

Jade Ellis

The Actors can influence the last lines yes like someone earlier said, Peter Capaldi said his "Children can hear your name" to kids on a CON Matts "I will always remember, when the Doctor was me" was Matt David Tennants "I dont want to go", was his choise, there are some deleted scenes were he tried it in different moods But to me the best one is Ecclestone "You were fantastic, and you know what.... so was I" His portrail transformed Doctor Who from a cancelled BBC show, to a world wide franchise.

Thomas88

To me, Jodies era was the worst, the show ever had. It was just a showrunner who destroyed 60years of canon, just because he wanted. There are very cool episodes, Rosa, Tesla, Punjab, Spyfall, Angels, Fugetive .... but the rest, it gets worse, the more times i watch it Thats a shame...i hope Jodie is allowed to do Big Finish, so she could have storys, written by people who really care about the show. To show how good she is, like they did with Colin Baker

Thomas88

Great reaction. End of an era. It's felt odd to watch you come to the end of 12's run days after the penultimate episode of 13's aired. It's made me feel a bit sad/ready for something new. Sad because I do love 12. And 12+Bill is so wonderful to me. I am normally an easy mark for any romantic subplot and I have shipped various pairings along with the best of them. But I think there's something a bit tricky about a functionally immortal character having a relationship with a normal short-lived human. You can only do the tragic-love-enjoy-it-while-it-lasts story so many times. So there's something so heart-warming about a genuine deep caring platonic friendship. A student/teacher vibe without it ever feeling condescending. It's weird because S10 is not my favourite in terms of episodes (though there are some bangers) but the Bill+12 dynamic I will eat up all day. I will be sticking around. I do like 13. Not as much but enough that I still enjoy the show. I am looking forward to seeing this era through fresh eyes. There's lots to love and South Yorkshire accents!

Paul Mason

I loved how she quickly said "there is snow" to avoid accidentally clueing Paula with her silence.

tal goren

I only have one other thing to say…. I'm going to miss those sunglasses!😭😭😭😭😭

Amy Chlebus

I think the general feeling on the Jodie/Chibnall run is that Jodie was good, Chibnalls writing let her down quite a bit. When you guys get there, i hope youll understand why the fandom is so divided on this run. Whether you like it or not is up in the air but i hope you understand that the reason why most rational people were upset isnt because of Jodie, just what she was given. Ill stick around because im hoping to see things in a different light with you two, ive only seen series 12 and 13 all the way through once so itll be good to revisit. But on another important note, can i just say, lets put our sonic sunglasses and screwdrivers in the air for the rockstar Doctor; the one and only Peter Capaldi. What a badass! Enough words cant be said, but in short, he was incredible in this role. Every moment he was on screen, he just ate the scene. Looking forward to series 11 with you both, much love

DeathSwitch

Also, I love that not only was Mark Gatiss playing a soldier in the crater, the German soldier he was in a stand-off with was played Toby Whithouse, who's also written a bunch of Doctor Who ('School Reunion', 'Vampires of Venice', 'God Complex', 'A Town Called Mercy', 'Under the Lake / Before the Flood' and 'The Lie of the Land'). So, not only did we get some companions return, and some music return (the soundtrack was seriously like Murray Gold's Greatest Hits!), but we also had two big writers from both the RTD and Moffat eras saying goodbye to the show. 😢

Nicole Mazza

Someone might've already said this (I'm pausing watching the reaction and haven't read the comments yet), but as to the actor's having a hand in what they say before they regenerate, I know in a way PCap did, as apparently the whole 'children are the only people that can understand the Doctor's real name' bit came from something he -- IIRC -- famously said to a kid (or group of kids) that he met at the Doctor Who Experience toward the end of his run. He was just being sweet to them as they met their hero, but Moffat was very charmed by the idea and put that in his final monologue. <3 P.S. Sadly, you don't get many big speeches before regenerations in the Classic series. You might get a sweet final line to comfort the companion ("A tear, Sarah Jane?" -- the Third Doctor) or....you might get gunned down by a street gang and die on the operating table. But all pretty 'short and sweet' compared to NewWho standards. Still, there's usually a 'good-bye story' and that's nice, if not bittersweet.

Nicole Mazza

I don't mind Jodie's Doctor, I liked her but just fell off because at the time I had to pirate them because Hulu had lost the rights. Also with US viewing there was a whole rights issue at the time and if you didn't have cable it was a pain in the ass. I mean I only pirate stuff I'm gonna watch once and that's it, otherwise it's just stuff before it moves onto streaming like Disney+ does with shows available with Disney Now, but it seems Disney+ is doing better with doing batch releases of current series.

DarkAshtar

Katrina's knowing look when Paula said it's not Christmasy lol

DarkAshtar

Personally, I love Jodie's Doctor. I have "issues" with some of the writing, and how that made the character say/do some things.... But anyway. Jodie has been the embodiment of the Doctor on and off screen since she took on the mantle.

Bill

I think the speech you're thinking of is actually the speech he gave to his granddaughter when she was leaving, not when he was regenerating. Also, the events portrayed in this episode are real events, more or less. Christmas, 1914, all across the western front of WWI, soldiers spontaneously held a temporary truce. And like in the episode, it started with the Germans singing carols, with the British joining in. Tentatively, they started coming out of their trenches into No Man's Land and began talking to one another, exchanging gifts and playing a game of soccer. Like the Doctor said, it never happened again. Not even the next Christmas. 1914 was early enough in the war that feelings among the soldiers hadn't yet been hardened enough by watching their friends shot, blown up and gassed. It's one little miracle in the middle of a horrible war that was never seen before and never seen after.

Scribbles

Paula: "You know what I would like? It must be out there, but I'd like a super-cut that would make me cry for literal hours." Awww <3 You two are great. David Tenant's "I don't want to go." gets me every dang time.

Bill

Going to be interesting to see the reactions to the next era. Personally I've love all three series so far and Jodie has become one of my favourite Doctors.

Jade Ellis

While I think an American Doctor Who with Tom Holland as the Doctor would be very weird (maybe not full on garbage but definitely weird), in an alternate universe where Tom Holland wasn't still the current Spiderman or in several years with some separation from the MCU, I find the idea of Tom Holland's Doctor is intriguing. I think it would be tough to not see his Doctor and not see Peter Parker. When you think about it (and I know these are already out there), the Doctor could very easily be a comic-book superhero character.

AJ

"We are... the movie Freejack."

Bill

I always loved this episode but hated to see Capaldi go he is my doctor and Bill Pots (Pearl Mackie), Nardole (Matt Lucas), and Missy (Michelle Gomez). They were the best crew of companions in my opinion loved them all and sad to see them go. Thank you for another great reaction.

BGAlphie

I kinda hated Moffat's writing of the First Doctor. He was kind of a dick, but never that sexist.

Scribbles

While I don't particularly like the Jodie era, I think it wasn't as bad as the second half of series 8, so I would stick around and watch it again with you.

tal goren

I would be SUPER down for a Katherine Tate Doctor. That said, my hope is the Doctor that we'll meet in the near future during [Spoiler Redacted Spoiler]. ;)

Bill

Great reaction Gals. Looking forward to seeing you react to Jodie. While there are some poorly written episodes imho, there are also some really (really) amazing ones ahead of you, ones tackling some real issues, (no spoilers so I'll comment when right) and btw Jodie is awesome 👍🏼👍🏼

Sufyaan Kazi

It’s not part of the current continuity, that doesn’t mean it’s not canon.

Aidan

While you're entitled to your opinion, i vehemently disagree that Jodie is lackustre. Some of the writing could be better, but Jodie is great as the Doctor, sorry.

mark saunders

Same with me. I like all seasons of Doctor Who, some more than others, but don't actively dislike any of them.

mark saunders

Oh, there is a lot written about the Christmas Truce. It so angered the commanders on both sides that steps were put into place to make sure it never happened again... You just cant have a nice war going if the soldiers refused to fight. Men were shot for cowardice by their own sides if they showed any signs of refusing to fight. Some soldiers with "Shell Shock" (PTSD) were Court Martialed & actually executed as a warning to the others.

Mark Ten

Classic Doctors didnt get great regeneration speeches - they mostly just said goodbye and maybe a last line or two before the effects came up. There are a couple of different "All Doctor Who Regenerations" on YouTube.

Mark Ten

It was a great goodbye to Peter Capaldi. I'm interested in your reactions to Jodie :)!

Ka Man Chan

Also and this is very IRONIC: Hugh Grant played the Doctor in a 1990 Comic Relief special written by... STEVEN MOFFAT!! Of course its not canon... they did a parody of Doctor Who starring Rowan Atkinson where a bunch of A list actors regenerated into the character just to immediately die. JUST AS PAULA SUGGESTED! Along with Hugh Grant, Joanna Lumley, Jim Broadbent and I believe Richard E Grant... Its quite hard to find on YouTube but worth a look!!

George Baxter

Like others have commented I too will unpledge at this point, the frustration with Moffat while understandable at times is nothing to compared to Chibnall boring PC writing, Jodie portrayal of the doctor is lacklustre and underwhelming, & I would take Clara over Ryan or Yaz any-day of the week, maybe if your still reacting to RTD return I’ll come back but until then Alonzee!

Wajid-Ibrar Haq

It was a wonderful reaction ladies!! I just can't pledge for content that I do not find easy to watch. I don't dislike Jodie. I dislike the writing and the show runner. That's just me. I will show back up when you react to the 14th Doctor. I might wait and see if you react to classic who 1st before I leave; but, until then, have a wonderful time reacting; and I will see you later. ❤️❤️

Amy Chlebus

So this was the last episode of Peter Capaldi, Stephen Moffat, Rachel Talalay, and most importantly: Murray Gold! Not sure if you guys noticed but throughout this story many of his best themes are played, last of the timelords, 9's regeneration song, etc. I always thought the music of the RTD and Moffat era was so good. I hope Kat and Paula react to one of the Proms. There's so much incredible mood setting and orchestral work in there. His character pieces for 11 and 12 are so iconic; you know instantly which Doctor is about to arrive on screen.

George Baxter

Well, I was wondering whether to support you on Patreon after Capaldi but Paula's "I don't give a fuck" proved I made a right decision. Neither do I then, not anymore, that kind of toxicity is where I draw the line. So that's that for me, thanks for the 10 seasons, bye!

Jan Popieluch

Wonderful reaction ladies as always, thanks so much. And many thanks to Peter Capaldi for his wonderful portrayal of the Doctor. I was on the fence about him during series 8 until the episode "Listen" and from then on I was hooked with his performance. And I loved the growth of his character from series 8 to 10 which arguable may be the biggest personal change of any Doctor. Here is a video from YouTuber B-WHERE who puts up a compelling argument suggesting this very thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PB_zGDZtEOI Titled "Why The 12th Doctor is The Greatest of Them All", B-WHERE puts together a string of interesting moments throughout Twelve's time arguing why he believes Capaldi has the best storyline. I may not totally agree with everything stated, but it did make me rethink a little more about his time and enjoy it more than before. I hope you folks get an opportunity to check it out. Thanks again Peter. And now, "Doctor, I let you go".

Henry from CO

As has been pointed out,the 'big speech' is a NewWho regeneration thing. In the Classic series they basically just said something (no spoilers) along the lines of "Oh well, too bad" ,and got on with it.

Ian Smith

Completely agree. She's a marvellous actor; and has presence in spades!

Ian Smith

Yeah... April Fools joke :) But it almost got me because I read it before realizing what day it was ;)

FalcorDragon

They definitely have a different vibe, so it's no surprise they don't work for everyone. :) I am enjoying the different take on the character, knowing of course it's not a permanent one. :)

FalcorDragon

I've also noticed they used s4 soundtracks and the eleventh hour soundtrack ;)

Dazzy

This was a nice one to end on. Thanks guys, this has been a fun journey. Lots of great highs and expected healthy differences of opinion. I'll see you on youtube for the odd episode over the next 3 series. Zero shade for anyone who loves them. I am still trying real hard each go around. I'm on my fifth watch through for S11 & S12. On the whole, the vast vast majority don't seem to have anywhere near the same level of growth in appreciation for me. There are just too many integral areas, where for me, the quality has dropped considerably. Nothing hyperbolic on my part. No it's not the worse thing that's ever been made. I just can't justify pledging for something I get next to no enjoyment out of. x

Daryl

Well Jon Pertwee hadn't actually been cast as The Third Doctor until after that serial had finished production which explains why we never don't see the transition.

Ben

Here's your regeneration compilation video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcggi9kXiaY The older series regenerations were very different. No long speeches. No Jesus pose. To me, they felt more true to the idea that the character was actually dying. Except 2's, of course. That one was just weird.

Dan Crucy

I agree with you about Phoebe Waller Bridge, but my personal favourite choice for another female Doctor would be Suranne Jones. She was superb as IDRIS, and check out Gentleman Jack if you've not seen it already.

Paul Flux

I'm looking forward to your reaction on Chibnalls Doctor Who run. I think his first season was decent. The second season of his definitely was a step up. But the quality of the episodes were more hit or miss than the first season. His first season had no episode I personaly thought of as bad, but the second season definitely had. And Flux is a whole different thing. I liked quite a few episodes, but the overarching plot and main villains were a confusing mess and I did not like that. But I liked Flux in general. IMO there is no season of New Who (haven't seen enough classic) I hate. There are definitely episodes I hate or strongly dislike, but in general I like each season. Some more than others.

Red Claw

https://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/doctor-who-to-be-completely-rebooted-with-tom-holland-as-the-doctor-96972.htm

Paul Flux

Um, you mean this article about Tom Holland that was published on the first of April...?

Paul Flux

There are several Youtube videos compiling all the regenerations. Now that you're up to date (for the moment) it would be great to see the Gallifrey Gals react to one of them! "Always try to be nice, never fail to be kind" is on my list of favorite things the Doctor has ever said.

Keith Goodnight

I love Tom Hollands acting but i cannot see him other than Spiderman lol.
