EMPRESS OF MARS, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! S10Ep9

Comments

This episode was better than I remembered. Loved the reaction!

Arek Schneyer

I grit my teeth, count to 100 rels and try not to text somebody (anybody!) about what the writers got wrong this time. After I reach 20 Rels I realize that Rels are the same as seconds, so why should The Tardis not translate it as seconds... Then I lay down and take a nap

@Gallifrey Gals I'm so glad you love it Kat!

Amy Chlebus

I love it when there's time wimey bootstrap stuff going on. It really makes the new fans confused and makes them try to figure it out, but we get it right away! Lol

Amy Chlebus

I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!!! - Kat

Time Lord

Oh, I did appreciate the callback! Just sometimes an old-school fan's gotta go what an old-school fan's gotta do! ;-)

Keith Goodnight

Surely not "obsessive"! Anyway, all I cared about was seeing/hearing Alpha Centauri again. I love callbacks, even if they bend canon. You dont have to be The Great Intelligence to appreciate a scene that doesnt confuse the new Who fandom and sparks delight in the non "obsessive".... well, maybe not. As for the "obsessive" - they love getting frustrated, angry, etc. when they spot inconsistencies.

Mark Ten

Yay Kat! You are the scarf! 😁😁❤️❤️

Amy Chlebus

I'm going to embrace the role of pedantic Classic fan here; just because, well, I'm a Classic fan and nitpicking is one of the things fans do... so anyway: The appearance of Alpha Centauri was a nice shout-out to the two "Peladon" serials in the Third Doctor's era, but unfortunately it completely messes up the chronology. In "The Seeds of Death" the Ice Warriors attempt to invade the Earth in a story set in the future, when Earth relies entirely on a teleportation network for all travel/transport-- so clearly some time in the future, well past the Victorian era. (It's a terrific Second Doctor story, BTW, in case the Gallifrey Gals want to watch another of his stories at some point.) Some time later than that, the Ice Warriors reject their warrior past and join the Galactic Federation, something the Third Doctor is surprised to learn when he visits the planet Peladon at a time when it has applied for admission to the Federation. The Peladon king's mother was from Earth, and the Doctor is mistaken for the ambassador from Earth, so clearly this is also far in the future, when Earth is a member of the Federation, and presumably farther into the future than the story set in the era of teleportation, since the Ice Warriors were still in the merciless warrior phase of their history. It was on Peladon that the Doctor met Alpha Centauri. Even if we grant that Alpha Centauri's species is sufficiently long-lived, the Ice Warriors cannot have joined the Galactic Federation as early as the 1800s-- unless they backslid terribly in later centuries, which would undermine the message of this story. Does any of this alter the charm of this story or the fun of the shout-out to the Classic era? No, not at all. Just a bit of needless pedantry which, as I said at the start, is kind of what obsessive fans are all about.

Keith Goodnight

Super mad, Katrina. How dare! :p

Bill

I squeed so hard when we saw Alpha Centurai again! They're def one of my all-time fave characters from the Classic series! <3 <3 <3

Nicole Mazza

Oooh, can't wait for this one! But then I'm a big Ice Warriors fan (esp in Classic Who)! Also, though he plays a bastard, I love seeing Ferdinand Kingsley as the horrid Catchlove in this -- he's the son of the legendary actor Ben Kingsley (probably most known for his portrayal of Gandhi). <3

Nicole Mazza

There is a middle ground between trust and suspicion, which is called caution.

Red Claw

Well, the Master has genocided entire races of people so.... There's no real redemption there. Just... Just the evil.

Bill

It's amazing how, Missy acting nice, is actually more scary than if she would have just done something obviously evil.

tal goren

and thanks to this episode we now know why the submarine guy wasn't the last of his species.

tal goren

Not Mad 🤗

Matt

Oopsie.... 😬😂 - Kat

Time Lord

Nice to see Paula reacting to Dr Who with the 4th Doctor as the fan!

Firefly24601

The one thing I really, really appreciate Moffat for. Bringing back the Ice Warriors. They were so fascinating in Classic Who and made more so by the Big Finish audios. It was nice to see them again, and their upgraded design was pretty cool, unlike whatever the hell Chibnall did to the Sontarans.

Scribbles

Alpha Centurai is my favorite creature/non companion from classic! It was so ridiculous & wonderful. I was so happy to see it again, even if it was only an eye on the screen... but what can you expect from a genderless hermaphrodite hexapod hypochondriac?

Mark Ten

Yes, that was an Ice Warrior in the submarine episode! The were also vaguely referenced in The Waters of Mars, although not seen.

Christopher Jones

Yep, Ice Warriors! Same creature as the Clara/sub episode! Sorry to contradict you, Kat. It was this kind of arrogance that won the British an empire that spanned the globe... for a while - and the same arrogance that lost that empire and set half the world on fire in their wake.

Mark Ten

It really makes me happy to hear Paula say this might be her favorite season. I think it's very underrated. I love Bill, Nardole, Missy; and Peter just gets better with every season.
