HERO WORSHIP, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S5Ep11

Comments

Data stopping his Following Orders to finish the model and encourage the boy, always thought that one of the most powerful and beautiful scenes, not just for Data, but all the lessons that Trek tried to teach.

Dan Williams

Unification was filmed and completed before Roddenberrys death it was the first episode aired after.

Darren Seal

It's no wonder they decided to have Sarek die. I've read that was what his story was based on: Roddenberry's own struggles, suggesting maybe that was written after this one, even though it aired before.

Bluefox

Eh. A lot of peanut butter (in the US at least) is quite sweet. I understand it often isn't in other countries.

Bluefox

I still think that may have been part of it. They may have raised shields thinking there was another ship there.

Bluefox

The main thing that stands out for me about this episode, that is really quite ironic considering it's all about grief and coping with loss is that this is the episode that was in production when Gene Roddenberry died. Hero Worship indeed.

Nolan

Apple slices and peanut butter are amazing! For some reason slices are best for this combo

Daniel Plummer

I want apple slices with peanut butter now, thanks Paula

Bear with me, but here's more from one of the "watch some movies" people. I noticed today that this Summer brings the 40th anniversary of Star Trek II. I can see not making this a movie reaction channel, but maybe in the next after-season TOS break you could watch the "Space Seed" episode, then Star Trek II. Could just be a one time thing but with the anniversary and it being considered the best Trek movie by many, it could justify seeing it. And some may want to be completists, but the first movie isn't needed to watch the second. Star Trek II is kind of a "soft reboot" really.

Just saying putting him in vulcan foster home would help

Hello, Ladies! Yes, that's Ensign Goodhair at the Navigation station

Apples and Peanut butter is also not heard of in Alberta, So that is a no ftom most of Canada. I have seen peanut butter and celery, so dont think it weird.

David Gallagher

There’s definitely no reason why he should have been sent to class hours after his rescue, while he was still processing his trauma and loss, and there’s no reason why the teacher would have given him a hard time for not following along with the rest of the students. I don’t know what the writers were going for. If this were supposed to be a month later, I could buy it.

Artemis Zeidman

I like apples, and I love peanut butter, but never the twain shall meet. I don’t enjoy mixing savory and sweet foods. Even though it wasn’t the point Paula was making specifically, I think she touched on something very important when she shared the story about her grandfather losing his sense of smell and taste, which relates to Data and the human experience more generally. Data aspires to be human and sees something as seemingly routine as being able to subjectively judge how food tastes as something that is universal to the human experience and an example of what keeps him from fully realizing his ambition. Whether Data truly ever realizes this during the series run or not, there is no default human experience. Whether through disability or illness, there are things considered universally human that some of us never experience or lose the ability to experience at some point in our lives. There are no gradations of humanity; no one is more or less human than the next person. Data, of course, isn’t human. He even acknowledges that will never change. While he can’t take pride in being an android, as pride is an emotion, he can accept his uniqueness if he chooses to. There’s nothing wrong with his study of humanity, especially if it helps him grow as a person and better understand his friends and colleagues, but I can’t help but think he’s chasing an arbitrary model of what it means to be human. +5 to Katrina for the Wesley shirt, BTW. Lookin’ sharp.

Matthew Zeidman

I never had apples and peanut butter before... Not a thing from here (Ottawa, Canada) anyhow...

Matthew Berry

Forgotten snack from my childhood, I used to dip apple slices in it all the time. Now I'm craving it again.

Jarrod Wild

Watching the Gallifrey Gals' intro to this video is the first time I ever heard of apples and peanut butter as a snack. It doesn't sound bad, but it's new to me.

Keith Goodnight

Never done apples & peanut butter. Peanut Butter & Banana yes, or celery. Never apples. Sounds good.

Bill

Better then I remember. However, it's criminal Timothy was left alone to his own devices after such a devastating experience. The same was done to Jeremy a few seasons back when he lost his mother.

Mark Chrisco

It comes back to me the media was on set recording the away team making their way through the wreckage of the Vico that was shown as Roddenberry's death was announced on one of the morning news shows. There did appear to be a rather somber mood on set.

Mark Chrisco

When I first saw this, I thought that what actually happened to the Vico was that they saw a sensor ghost they thought was a hostile vessel, then fired at it and the phaser blast ricocheted back and hit them. Never even suspected it was shields.

Firefly24601

I'm from America, and I STILL don't understand biscuits and gravy. But I never thought how that would sound to someone from the UK, and it's pretty HILARIOUS. Like you said, something similar to "cookies in tomato sauce."

Firefly24601

Hmm... next episode? Not one of my favorites. Very intense especially for a Trek episode.

Joe Concepts

I remember that this was the episode they were shooting when everyone found out Roddenberry had died. And Marina Sirtis was being interviewed and had an emotional breakdown on set. When the episode aired it felt like his death had an effect on the shoot and thus everyone's performances. I don't notice it now, maybe I was reading too much into it at the time.

Jarrod Wild

ANYTHING with peanut butter is a win.

Mark Steckel

Peanut butter wasn't generally a thing in the UK in any form at all until relatively recently. I'd only seen the apple combo on an American guys weight loss vlog. As someone who never got into peanut butter, even when I moved to the US, it sounds about as dissonant "biscuits and gravy" did when I thought it was "cookies au jus".

Kirk Deighton

Yeah, I'm a big crybaby. I think I'll be holding it together pretty well, then I'll look up at Katrina, and think Uh oh, here we go.

Eric

Apples and peanut butter is the BEST snack. had it all the time as a kid, have it pretty often now.

Arek Schneyer

Another child. Another near destruction of the ship. Yup... Kids are just a jinx!
