Comments

Oh gosh, I LOVE Michelle Forbes too, lol :D she is an amazing actress, she was on True Blood. :)

Terry Mitchell

I keep noticing that Katrina will speak or sing along with the intro, but that it isn't actually lined up with what she says. Could you guys consider bumping the video so that they line up? That way the reactions will be lined up, too.

Bluefox

An interesting note is the Great Bird himself, Gene Roddenberry was an atheist. Heard a story he had to leave the wedding of Jonathan Frakes because of his discomfort with the ceremony. However, he never belittled or argued against any form of faith as depicted in Star Trek.

Mark Chrisco

When they said it was the "New Providence colony" I immediately thought of my State capitol, Providence, Rhode Island. And then when they beamed down and saw the big crater I was like "Yup. That's it!" All that was missing was the orange road cones, barrels and and detour signs.

Henchman Twenty1

@DarkAshtar - Thanks. Always happy to see you here too. Sadly, once Geordie Nerd finishes up with The Venture Bros I won't be there anymore, except for when the movie comes out. As I stopped watching Archer after season 7, which he recently finished, and don't follow any other shows he does there's no reason to remain and I am desperately broke. I will stay with the gals for as long as I can as I'm still a TNG fan and am hoping they may decide to do DS9, though I have been told by others here that it is not very likely.

Henchman Twenty1

I just want them to see the pilot and Duet, at least. And to the poster expressing doubts about the Gals interest due to it's 'religious' themes: A, I feel the vast majority of core Trek fans are staunch atheists, yet DS9 competes with TNG for favourite amongst them. B, one could argue that it's not even religion/faith due to *(SPOILER)* their 'deities' being proved factually existent and omnipotent in the very first episode.

JXTN

The person you are thinking of who beamed down early was Commander Shelby to Jouret IV in "The Best of Both Both Worlds" part 1.

Satyr359

I would agree... but with the deep religious areas in DS9, I doubt it. They have both strongly expressed their opinions in the past on that matter.

Matthew Berry

I know Paula isn't the biggest DS9 fan, but still keeping my fingers crossed for reactions, I think Katrina will really like the deep character archs

MrEvers

Words can not encapsulate how much I detest the Ro character

Andrew Hogan

Michelle Forbes plays a fantastic character on Battlestar Galactica

Hok'Tar

Always happy to see you my friend lol we have so many overlapping fandoms I forget until I see you on a different place. I mostly associate with Geordie Nerd, and if I've said this before my short term memory, measured in at least months sucks. I only have good long term memory I remember things from decades ago clearly

DarkAshtar

I mean the difference between patriot and terrorist is the matter of who the victor is. To the British the American revolutionaries were terrorists and guerillas. That's the difficulty with imperialism.

DarkAshtar

Also one of my first crushes and maybe subconsciously a reason I find sassy personalities attractive.

Josh G

couple weeks after Thanksgiving lmao we're almost into February. I don't mind just thought that was hilarious.

DarkAshtar

Yeah, they wanted her so badly, that after deciding on Nana Visitor for the Kira character, went to her one last time to try and change her mind.

Mark Chrisco

It's so interesting how they continue to handle the concept of terrorism with morality and nuance. As Data has said, "is it correct to say that terrorism is acceptable when all options for peaceful settlement have been foreclosed?"

Shelly

Admiral Hanson was alright but you're definitely correct

Shelly

Yeah. That episode with the Binars who made that very special...ahem, hologram for Riker.

Henchman Twenty1

Reminds me of the term "Vulcanian" in early TOS episodes. It's always interesting to see creators figure out what does and doesn't work with new aliens. It's also weird to see the ridges so high on Ro's nose. They'll be lowered for Bajorans once we get to DS9.

Dan Crucy

IT BEGINS! We're finally introduced to the most important, connected and interesting place in Trek, significantly more so than even Earth: BAJOR! Speaking vaguely to avoid spoilers: Through them, their "astronomical phenomenon", Cardassia (and their *other* opponents), the foundations of DS9 and Voyage (and their 300+ episodes between them) are laid, and the Trek universe is MASSIVELY expanded. I realise we were cursorily introduced to the Cardassians earlier, but now you start to understand their nature and situation going forward. I'm surprised how little the gals talked about the new information on the Cardassians and their horrific behaviour. God, Ro is so radical. Really wish she was around more. Oh well, we'll always have Cain...

JXTN

Also, this station would have to be much bigger than the movie version to fit a Galaxy class ship in it.

Joe Concepts

...and she seems to have forgotten it appeared in TNG in the first season, too. :)

Joe Concepts

They kind of made Tom's back story the same, though Locarno wouldn't have worked as the "funny" character.

Joe Concepts

The space station that prompted a "holy shit" from Katrina early in the episode is a re-used model from the movie Star Trek III: The Search For Spock.

Dan Crucy

They are sometimes referred to as the "Bajora" here but that is eventually dropped and thereafter just called "Bajorans".

Henchman Twenty1

This episode was a great introduction of the Bajorains to Star Trek.

Cody

The great thing about that scene is you probably felt exactly the same way Ro felt. It is irritating and presumptuous of Guinan. It was also absolutely correct. Therein lies the magic of who Guinan is. Picard was also put off by Guinan getting involved. The larger point is, Guinan isn't wrong and I don't know of a time when her intuition has been mistaken. Picard knows this as well, and it's why her calling Ro a friend carried so much weight that he would listen to what Ro had to say.

John

Ensign Ro is one of my favorite characters. My avatar or who I think I'd like to be in a holodeck fantasy world is based off her.

e com

Great reaction! But I have what might be an unpopular take on Guinan in this episode. I realize that she’s ultimately correct in all over her assessments in this story. But I instinctively feel irritated by how she imposes herself on someone who is clearly indicating that they want to be left alone. I get that Ro “actually” is looking for help. But in general I sort of hate it when people think they are SO insightful and therapeutic that it’s okay for them to go around telling other people how they themselves are feeling and what they need. I will say that Guinan’s description of someone who has their “poles reversed” is a pretty good way of explaining how some people really DO mean B when they are saying A. But I think that’s a rarity in real life. For the most part, I think people should be taken at their word about their own needs and preferences. And I also think some less reliable people use the IDEA of people saying one thing and meaning another to impose themselves on people in all sorts of unacceptable ways. So while I love Guinan, I kind of hated her being so smug and “I know what you’re thinking” here.

Andrew Pulrang

Starfleet seems a bit inconsistent with its uniform policy. When we eventually see Ferengi in Starfleet they are wearing those head skirts of theirs as part of their uniforms. Yet in an episode of Voyager there is a Bajoran in one episode who is told to remove his earing. I guess it depends on if and how a superior officer decides to enforce it or not

Henchman Twenty1

Kira in DS9 was originally meant to be Ro. Same way Tom Paris in Voyager was originally meant to be Nicholas Locarno.

Adam Brown

Not sure if you've noticed, but Starfleet Admirals are... well almost universally untrustworthy. It seems to me that Star Fleet Command is full of self-centered ego maniacs who are very much interested in thier own agenda's and very seldomly do you find one that is open, honest and genuinely good. IT's a commentary from the writers on our political structures as humans. The people near the action/discovery are decent, but the people close to 'real' power are in it for themselves. PS - Ro is a great addition. Her 'cultural heritage' as a Bajoran is massively expanded on in future trek, and is a much needed shake up in this season. Can't wait till we get to DS9, I'm so there for it!

Jay Fleming

Regarding Ro,s earring vs Worf's sash, I assume one earns the right to deviate from basic uniform code through their service? Kinda like, you've joined Starfleet, now you must prove you are Starfleet first and once you have, you can regain expression of your identity as an officer. I've also always loved the Bajoran naming convention. It's funny how when you flip them so the family name is last and the given name first the just don't work at all. Laren Ro? Nirys Kira? Nope.

Nolan

Nice to see someone standing up to senior authority, even knowing the risk of being slapped back down

Mark Ten

Ro was intended to be spun off into DS9 but Michelle Forbes turned the job down which led to the creation of Kira Nerys. Both fantastic characters played by fantastic actors.

Glen

Riker's like that also. He and Geordi were like that with Tam Elbrun, before Barclay even.

Jarrod Wild

This has always been in my top-5 favorite TNG episodes.

Mark Steckel

"...and you're right, Data, she erred." - Geordie

Henchman Twenty1

I like how Data didn't treat Ro with any prejudice regarding her her past at the conference table. He merely asked for her suggestion as to who they should talk to without having an attitude towards her. Speaking of attitudes, I'm getting tired of them using Geordie as the intolerant one. "I wouldn't turn my back on her." He was intolerant of Barclay at first too. You think he'd learn.

Henchman Twenty1

sheperd? salarians?

GreyIrohNee

I don't really think this is a spoiler, but they keep changing Ro's hairstyle after this and I really preferred it the way she had it in this episode. Also, that earing she wore wasn't just a piece of jewelry but a symbol of a Bajoran's cultural and religious heritage, a sign of their faith and also reflected their family lineages. No two were alike. I'm sure Paula will mention it at the end but this episode is a major setup for Deep Space Nine. Edit: She sort of mentioned it but said they hadn't thought up the idea for that show yet. I disagree. I think they were in the process of conceptualizing DS9 but hadn't worked it all out yet. They did ask Michelle Forbes to be on DS9 but she turned it down, so as Paula mentioned, a similar character was created who, I feel, really worked out.

Henchman Twenty1

I love Ensign Ro too. It is so refreshing that she isn't perfect in a show where the main cast are nearly perfect people. Barclay was a good beginning but Ro is a much better choice of character to put the bridge crew in their place. I think that scene where Ro was already off the ship is a lot like Cmdr Shelby being gone with Data when Riker & Geordi get to the transporter room during Best of Both Worlds. Though, the trope of the computer saying someone isn't on board the enterprise seems funny to me. Like today we just get notifications for anything. It is interesting how society and interactions have changed that writers today might say that Picard should have just told the computer to notify him or Worf that Ro has left the ship or stopped her from leaving by diverting her transport to the brig. There are a ton of episodes I like in this season and this is just the start!

Christian Rennie

Katrina IS Ro!!

Brett Whittaker

It's interesting how the framing in this episode of the conflict between Cardassians and Bajorans is...very different then how it's handled in the future. I don't want to get into spoilers so I will leave it at that.

Mike

I knew you would love her! Surprisingly she’s only in 8 episodes as Ro!! Some of my favourite episodes have her though.

Brett Whittaker

FINALLY! I've been looking forward to this episode for at least a season and a half, because I KNEW Katrina would love Ro.

Funderbunk

I was about 14 when this episode came out and immediately had a huge crush on Michelle Forbes. Something dark and exotic about her nose ridges and weird earring. I think it was the first time many americans had seen that type of earring. Very gypsy like. It became very popular for a certain type of edgy girl in the early to mid 90's. My type lol.

John Welch

Ensign Ro is an awesome character.

Brett

You were thinking of "Best of Both Worlds, Part 1". Commander Shelby beamed down to the planet with Data before the away team. Riker was not happy.

Wayne Clarke

Commander Shelby beamed down in Best of Both Worlds Pt1

Brett

Admiral Kennelly isn’t wearing his Cardassian Covid mask

Brett Whittaker

4am here in Australia literally couldn’t sleep. Been looking forward to introducing Katrina to one of my favourite characters

Brett Whittaker

"Gross candy corn" is redundant.
