REDEMPTION, PART II, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S5Ep1

Comments

This two-parter was screened at my college student center for whatever reason and during that shot when Data stands up after having just exposed the Romulans was met with a standing ovation! The show really set us up for it by pitting him against a not-so-subtle bigot.

Ben Chan

As bad as Tasha's original death was, this one they gave her is worse......

Dan Williams

I think the reason why he had to resign is because his serving as an active combatant would've been a violation of the prime directive. Even if a Starfleet officer is on leave, they're still bound to abide by it. Although it seems at the end that there are no consequences, I'd imagine him officially rejoining Starfleet would be a process that entailed more than Picard just saying "ok".

Raja

Regarding the detection net issue, it's often contended that the cloaking device isn't effective at warp speed, either because the power consumption is too great or that a cloaked ship still produces a detectible subspace field. Going around would've taken too long at impulse, and warping uncloaked beyond the edges of the net would've placed them in vulnerable areas subject to attack by Gowron's forces.

Raja

It is such a good read, definitely worth seeking out if you are into TNG.

Pirateman

From what I understand, it's not that they didn't think that Tasha and Castile had the chemistry. They just didn't think they would have had any opportunity to have actually had sex. They wouldn't have done it during the war, they wouldn't do it on the way back, and they wouldn't have had time to do it while awaiting execution. Other than that, all I will say for now is that I always found Sela's story to be fishy.

Bluefox

A lot of good and "interesting" episodes this season. I think there's a good argument to made that this is TNG's most consistently strong season out of all 7. There is a lot of really good storytelling and character work on a week-to-week basis.

Timothy Hennon

I was glad they gave Chief O'Brien something to do besides babysit the transporter room all day. It makes sense as he had been Capt. Maxwell's tactical officer back on the Rutledge. Also, Hobson should never get promoted again. Despite coming around at the end, his actions and attitude were totally unbecoming of an officer.

Henchman Twenty1

Glad to see you all back on the TNG horse. Hope you had a restful break. Katrina made an excellent point re: Guinan and Sela blaming Picard for “sending” Tasha to the past. Obviously, the writers were kind of half-remembering what happened in “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” There wasn’t any good reason for retroactively making Picard responsible, as he wasn’t wracked with guilt or anything like that.

Matthew Zeidman

In the game Star Trek Online, wich has all rights and actors of real Star Trek(and the fake new s**t) . You learn that Sela lied. Denise Crosby repraised her role as Sela and has many dialouges with the player and you learn that Tasha was quite happy with the Romulan but at some point wanted to go, so she was captured and later lived in the outa worlds. In tht game Tasha is stil alive in 2409.

Thomas88

Although the various sub-plots are really entertaining and well written, for me this episode is completely stolen by Denise Crosby (and I mean that in a good way!) The character of Tasha never properly allowed her to display any range or charisma, but here she dominates the screen. (Her meeting with Picard, for me,is the high point of an all round entertaining episode). It just goes to show that villains make the best characters :)

Ian Smith

I agree. I always felt that he had some sort of sub-routine in his programming along the lines of 'pseudo-anger display,in order to achieve desired logical result from humans'.

Ian Smith

I am definitely someone who never liked Sela's story because of what it tells us about Tasha's fate. Yesterday's Enterprise gave her a better end than she had originally. It was a nice way to give the character a better send off. Having her be forced into being a "consort" and being executed just sounds terrible. It was clever connecting Sela to the time travel story. I just wish it was done differently.

Joe Concepts

That's interesting. I don't think that's what happened in this episode, but thank you for the context all the same! Always happy to learn something new. If that had been the case in this episode, I wish they would have made that clearer. I suppose I can't shake the feeling that this episode wanted to have its cake and eat it too, as the saying goes. It's a minor issue in the grand scheme of TNG, given that it's far more episodic than serialized by nature. I suppose I've become spoiled in recent years due to the onset of serialization becoming more of the norm. I do apologize to anyone if I've given offense or else come off as whiny and unkind about all of this. And thank you, everyone, for replying without meanness or cruelty, but with a kind and open dialogue. It is much appreciated. And as I recall, episodes 2 and 3 of Season 5 are both among my favorites. I can't wait to meet one of my favorite guest characters once again for the first time! ^_^

Jonathan Bruser

I don't think it needs be put in human terms like instinct. Complex predictive analysis with cost-benefit comparison, or something like that, could come to the same conclusion.

JXTN

I believe there's historical precedent for soldiers of one group being officially removed in order to be temporarily absorbed by an ally officially under their flag/uniform, for legal/jurisdiction purposes.

JXTN

Hmmm looking ahead episode 21 is going to be interesting…

Brett Delbridge

No, I get that he resigned. What I think is strange is that he just goes back to Starfleet as if nothing happened. It would be the same as me saying to my boss, "I want to go visit my home country and fight for its freedom, but since you won't give me enough time off, I'm quitting my job," and then going to fight only to come running back to my boss and asking me to hire me back at the same position I had when I quit. I'm not saying that Worf resigning was a bad thing. I just wish that there were actual consequences for his decision instead of an immediate return to the status quo.

Jonathan Bruser

He requested an extended leave of absence and was denied. Resignation was his only choice

Brett Delbridge

I can’t with the next episode drives me crazy

Brett Delbridge

Hope you two had a great holiday and happy to see you back. As much as I was looking forward to seeing your reactions to this episode, I can't wait to see the next two. As you kids would say, they are straight bangers!

Antonio

Not only did Data show a little anger here, but something even more profound: instinct. It's such an entirely human trait. You could say he's been observing humans so much that he can correlate a positive rash action with a low success probability that results in greater success than was predicted. It could be he learned this from poker. Or it could be...something more!

Shelly

Next week, Kat, her eyes open!

EricH86

One thing I always felt was wrong about this episode was that Worf didn't just take a leave of absence from Starfleet. He outright RESIGNED entirely, and then he just goes back to the Enterprise at the end of the episode as if he didn't just throw that part of his life away. It rang false, like any member of Starfleet can resign and wage an illegal war and then come back with no repercussions. I get that it needed to happen because of contract reasons and story reasons, but I would have loved to see actual consequences.

Jonathan Bruser

It's interesting: I've always perceived Data's 'anger' showing through as a front: he knows how to mimic emotions, and he knows that being 'angry' in his orders is more likely to get them obeyed by this officer. But that's just my interpretation.

Arek Schneyer

I LOVED THIS REACTION!!!! (AND NEXT EPISODE IS DARMOK). Gowron's line "But not today" is quoted Extensively in my family-- bugged out eyes and all.

Arek Schneyer

If you go on YouTube and look up the scene of Data meeting his first officer, the comment section is filled with examples of what a Klingon counselor would be like (since he uses that as an example of why Data isn’t suited to be Captain). The Klingon Counselor examples is one of the most wholesome things on the internet.

TB

Oh the Romulans, such untapped potential. While I was never fond of the whole, give Tasha some agency in her death, then revoke it through forced marriage and child betrayal echoing her past, I do kiiiiiiiinda see why the writers didn't make Sela Castillo's. When would them getting together have logically happened? Not before be sent back, there was no time. Not when they got back, they were thrown into battle immediately. After Romulan capture assuming he lived? Would they have that amount of privacy or even opportunity to do so? Would they WANT to in the midst of interrogation and detention? Would the Romulans allow a human pregnancy to go full term? In that sense I can see the writers seeing all that as a big can of worms. And yet was the way they did go about this the best they could have done? Probably not. (Also, the main complaint fans have for this episode that they just have to accept: how does a detection net on one spot along the border blockade the entire Klingon/Romulan Border? It's SPACE, go around) Oh, and I was pretty sure it was Sela's backstory that would draw Katrina's ire. I'm not sure if *I* was the one who said she'd hate what happened in the S4 finale, but if so, it was Sela's story I was referring to. (Even if it doesn't come up until part 2, there was no way to refer to it obliquly without mentioning the end)

Nolan

That's how the novels portrayed it I believe.

Nolan

I figure Data's angry orders to the first officer aren't necessarily him actually being angry. He's just acting the way a captain would act in that situation. He has to remind the guy of his duty, forcefully.

Joe Concepts

I think Data didn't tell Picard what he was doing in case the Romulans could intercept their communications. As for Tasha's and her daughter's back story, I personally don't think it is bad writing. I don't think we are meant to like what happens to her. It should make us feel uncomfortable. What I take from Tasha's story is that her original death was without meaning and senseless. This time she gave herself over to being abused in the final years of her life in order to save the lives of the other prisoners. Once they were safe and she found opportunity she tried to escape but was executed. Her death this time had meaning because she had saved the lives of the other prisoners. I am curious though what happened to them other prisoners though because they never showed up to Starfleet explaining what had happened. I can only assume they were imprisoned rather than executed.

Peter

I like the picture of the Enterprise-F concept drawing in your video frame. Also great video.

Kalhoun

Another one of those episodes where I have to go back to watch their reactions because I was too enthralled with what was happening!

Eric

I believe I heard one of them say she was using Netflix so hopefully no disruption but for yourself you may have to become a Netflix subscriber if you aren't already.

Brad Barter

Data's First Officer commits several clear cases of insubordination and Data ignored them. Neither of them deserve to hold the positions they do. However, Galron needs to have Katrina transferred to the Klingon fleet- she'd have those MuddaFuks straightened up and back in line in a few minutes.

Mark Ten

So what’s going to happen when Amazon loses streaming availability? I believe you’ll only be able to watch on Paramount+ and I don’t want to have to join another service

Andrew Hogan

I know I don't say much or chat in the discord, but watching you guys is the total highlight of my week :)

Mike

Warf and Yor?

Jarrod Wild

So glad you’re back! I was really missing these reactions!

Brian Hakala

Yes!

John

Warf? ;)
