The Tholian Web, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! Original Series Edition

Comments

Those suits show up only in this episode and no other! It's crazy.

I hope the season 1 episode "This Side of Paradise" (1x24) makes it onto a TOS poll some time. I think it's the very best Spock-centric episode and it's one of Leonard Nimoy's finest acting performances of the entire series. Two of his scenes in that episode are especially poignant and heartbreaking; to this day they still bring tears every time I watch them.

Gaius Frakking Baltar

Spock and McCoy are a paradigmatic example of what TV Tropes calls "Vitriolic Best Buds." Under pressure, and especially when Kirk isn't there to moderate, the vitriolic would tend to take over, but you'd always see them pull back from it one way or the other. See also the season one episode, "The Galileo Seven."

Keith Goodnight

I interpret it as Kirk realizing there might be some tensions, but that the situation amplified it into what we saw. Kirk likely just expected them to disagree on a course of action, rather than being at each other's throats. The underlying idea of the three is that Spock is logic, McCoy is emotion, and Kirk is the mediator. Logic and emotion would likely disagree in a crisis.

Bluefox

"The Tholian Web" was never one of my favorite TOS episodes (and I was surprised it won the poll). Now I can't seem to get enough of it. I'm about to re-watch the GGals reaction for the 5th time in less than two weeks. **presses play**

Robert Jones

Watch Enterprise "In a Mirror, Darkly" and see the web in action.

Raja

By the way, U mentioned a TNG episode that references a TOS episode about a disease that makes them go crazy. That episode is called "The Naked Now" but it does not reference THIS episode, it references another TOS episode named "The Naked Time"

Sal Sanchez

I always wondered what the Tholian Web would do when completed. I always imaging at that point the web would contract and crush the captured vessel.

Mark Chrisco

Certainly not speaking for everyone just my opinion. You don’t have to agree

Brett Delbridge

I enjoy them all for different reasons. Please do not speak for everyone.

Jason Faria

The Tholians were also mentioned in the TNG episode Reunion by K’Ehleyr referring to how a grab for power would drag in other systems.

Lamar Bradford

Enterprise Season 4

Sal Sanchez

Well 5 would have to be bottom of the list for sure but I wouldn't mind watching their reaction MST3K style. In order to know good there must be bad. The reason we love good Trek is because drek like 5 exists.

John Welch

JXTN 100% although I like 6 quite a lot, SloMoPic optional. And 5 👎

Brett Delbridge

Well, they gotta watch the 2-3-4 story sequence. and no-one wants 5, so really it's just a matter of convincing them to watch 1, 6 and Galaxy Quest. I'm not sure where a poll would come into it, really.

JXTN

DS9

Brett Delbridge

Can we have a Patron poll for watching the Startrek movies!?

Brett Delbridge

I'm with you on the other two, but oh god, not Mudd, please...on the other hand, Arena! One must experience the stunning choreography of GORN!

JXTN

It will take about 38 years but we will eventually find out where the Defiant disappeared to.

Sal Sanchez

Transporter anxiety, you say? Sounds like someone needs to watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture! In case it wasn't clear, I think they were made temporarily interphase by the previously mentioned power-use-interference reacting with their sudden massive power draw, then thrown away by the interphase interaction with what I assume was a Tholian tractor beam, and since being interphase is shown to allow you to pass through objects, they passed harmlessly through the web, before re-phasing at the new location, now that they weren't interacting with the damaged space fabric at the original location. As for the injection, it could be the suit has a dedicated port for medical applications, and McCoy used that. I don't understand how Kirk was projecting his interphase image onto the Enterprise, however.

JXTN

Not really sure if the Tholians have sex or gender. It could just be Toxic silicon crab people-ness.

EricH86

A later Trek revists this Defiant and recreates the bridge exactly, down to the two crewmen choking each other at the helm. I recently watched that episode right after this and it was wild how faithful and reverent they were to this show.

Nolan

Yay! Thanks, still watching. I popped over to comments to mention, iirc, transporter filters were new in TNG :) And now back to our show!

Daniel Plummer

I'm still not sure why the fans voted for this one.

Christine Ester

I know you guys have probably already picked and filmed all your TOS reactions, but if not I would love to see you guys react to Space Seed.

Mike

I have never been a huge fan of this episode. I think the main reason is that I find the antagonistic tone between Spock and Mccoy to be too out of character by this point of the show. By season three Spock and Mccoy, while still capable of bickering, were clearly friends. So Kirk, their commanding officer and friend, seemingly dies and Mccoys reaction is picking at every command decision spock make and petty shittiness like suggesting Spocks main goal is to be Captain. And Spocks vagueness and unwillingness to explain to Mccoy his suspicions that Kirk might still be alive is baffling to me given what they have been through in the previous 2 seasons. I see nothing in the script clearly indicating that these are symptoms of the rage sickness affecting the crew, indeed that fact that Kirks advice on his tape seems to show he predicted this clash leaves me skeptical of that explanation. To me this is just poor writing. Mccoy in particular is so over the top in his anger at everything spock says or does at a time when he should be supporting his friend, colleague and new captain that this episode is almost unwatchable for me. I would have preferred "The Enterprise Incident" or "Day of the Dove" for a season 3 reaction. But the patrons spoke I guess, lol.

John Welch

The Tholians are a silcon-based species that's only mentioned a few other times in later series. (Will Riker's dad Kyle Riker was the only survivor of a Tholian attack on a starbase, after which he met & fell in love with Dr. Pulaski.) We don't get a full view of what a Tholian looks like until 2005's Enterprise 2-parter "In a Mirror, Darkly".

Raja

A great choice for a season 3 story! Thank you for everything; and for helping to brighten 2021 for me. Have a great holiday season; and here's to a fulfilling reaction-filled 2022 :)

Ian Smith

For all the poking fun at TOS gets in general (not by Paula and Katrina), I expect you're starting to see why those of us who grew up on TOS love it so much. Thank you Paula and Katrina for doing these TOS episodes. ❤

Britton Robbins

I can't think of any other relationship in the various Trek shows that are quite like Spock and McCoy's. A very antagonistic friendship.

Joe Concepts

And now we know why Riker insists Pickard stays at home, puts his feet up and smokes his pipe... and stays out of helmets cut from an old screen door!

Mark Ten

I hope you all are enjoying your break. Thanks for the TOS episodes. They're fun to watch with you newbs. Can't wait for more, so many people to meet, Harry Mudd, the Squire of Gothos, Khan.🖖
