Hell Bent, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! S9Ep12

Comments

The way I understand it is, Gallifreyans are the species, and Time Lord is a rank one obtains through an academy mentioned in the episode Listen. The people wearing poor clothing are probably Gallifreyan, but not Time Lord. When a Time Lord, especially The Doctor, shows up it's a big deal. I hope that helps clear things up a bit.

I think you're totally right about the "too many ideas to fit in". Developing them all and bringing them off successfully was always going to be a big ask.

Nothing wrong with that whatsoever! <3 - Kat

Time Lord

I would like to point out that we have complimented Moffat on MANY occasions. We've even talked about the fact that while we do get upset with his writing, it's his writing that is good because it's making us feel something - whether or not it's a good or bad feeling. - Kat

Time Lord

Except the doctor never died on Tranzalore, the timelords gifted Matt Smith another regeneration cycle so how can Clara go in his timestream/tomb which doesn’t exist anymore? 🤔🤔 hence why Moffat never mentions “Impossible Girl Arc” during Capaldi Run, so it is an interesting theory that Paula has come up with

Remember when in Listen, while picking up the future Time Traveler Orson Pink something was knocking on the door, while there should be nothing left alive this close to the end of the Universe? We never saw it, but the Doctor did. My theory is, that it's Ashildr/Me and in the Girl, who died he remembered meeting her there.

Red Claw

I feel the same -- you're not alone! <3

Nicole Mazza

I'm sorry, but I like 12 better with sonic sunglasses. I always will. I know I'm part of the minority, but I always am in the minority, when it comes to the Whoniverse.

Amy Chlebus

This is still my favorite season so far. Im really looking forward to the next season, i didnt like it on my first watch but appreciated it more when i do rewatches. Not sure if you guys are taking a break b4 the specials, but just i case, Happy holidays :)

Amanda Logsdon

Love this episode, I think Paula hit the nail on the head again with how the Doctor got sick of losing people and he finally snapped. Im not sure this story wouldve worked with 9, 10 or 11..12 is the only Doctor (apart from the war doctor) i could believe that would ever shoot someone trying save a companion. I understand why some dont like this episode because of Clara being 'back' but time hasnt torn itself apart.. and we saw the raven kill Clara.. so she did go back and die on Trap Street we just dont know what they did on the way. It leaves the door open to bring her and Me back for an anniversary or something if they really wanted to.. theyre out there somewhere in a Tardis diner! Jenna and Peter were just perfect. The growth they went through from an uneasy duo in Deep Breath to inseperable best friends here was excellenty done imo. Going to miss them together. Excited for the specials!

DeathSwitch

Another great reaction this is my first comment on one of the videos so hi hope you and anyone that is reading this is doing well! :D Normally I use discord but didn't see a channel for talking about the reactions so didn't want to spoil for people who haven't seen it yet

BGAlphie

God forbid we ever compliment Moffat! Its not like he wrote Capaldi's monologues, or their character interactions, or showrunned the season, or tied it to previous seasons, or thematically developed the Doctor's fear of losing people whilst telling an entertaining story! No he's just a hack who didnt remove Jenna Coleman when she said she wasn't ready to leave the show. What an asshole. He represents everything that's wrong with TV today.

George Baxter

I enjoy this episode more with each watching. I understand people being frustrated that it weakens Heaven Sent but I don't see it that way. Clara died. Even if she has an adventure with Ashildr, she is dead and the Doctor forgets her. I think Missy heard the legends of the hybrid and created it by orchestrating Clara and the Doctor. The Doctor goes too far quite often when he's left alone, Waters of Mars anyone? If the Time Lords had him trapped in a confession dial after losing Amy and Rory who knows what he would have done. As for Clara going back now to be the impossible girl, jumping into his time stream created the impossible girl. With Who you can't logically explain everything which can be frustrating if you don't just let go and enjoy the ride. Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey. 😉

Alisa Loudner

I think the Gals hit the nail on the head when they said Capaldi's and Coleman's scenes together were realllllly good. The extended dialogue scenes those two have are the best parts of this episode!

Firefly24601

This was not my favorite episode... but BOY do I love a lot of moments in it. I think had Clara not had the "Ok long way round" line, and had she gone back to her death, I would have loved this episode more. But I think moffat was trying to fit too many ideas and stories into one episode. I think the Hybrid was kind of pointless. I've always thought it was kind of pointless. I think it was, in general, just a reason for the timelords to interrogate the doctor, and I think they could have done a better job finding a reason for that to happen. I adore those actors, and I ADORE all the monologues that Capaldi gets. It is not my favorite season ARC, but it IS my favorite season.

Arek Schneyer

Yup, if the girls do watch another classic then 'The Deadly Assasin' is a great story, also explains why he became president and also was I believe the first time we really heard about the limited number of regenerating thing right? Plus, Tom Baker (again) :)

Sufyaan Kazi

No, Clara doesn't go back to Doctor's timeline to help him - that happened all in Series 7 finale. She's just off to have some adventures with Ashildr before she definitely dies. For me this episode really is about Doctor-Clara relationship and its end. I wouldn't say Clara is more special than other companions - to Doctor, each current companion is equally special and Clara happened to be his companion until now, but personally I think other companions would work well in much of Doctor-Clara ark too, it's just that Clara is not the best written companion (I think most can agree on that lol) so it feels kinda forced. But agree with Paula's take that Doctor was so tired of losing people that he finally snapped (which is actually a subtle theme for the whole S9).

Ekkarin22

That whole scene in the cloisters gets me every time, Jenna was great. Then her subtle reactions when Peters' 12 says he would recognise Clara if he saw her again. Brilliant 🥰

Sufyaan Kazi

Didn't like this series when I first watched it but I think I that's partly because I didn't like series 8 which still remains my least favourite series so far. But having watched the episodes again and reaction videos to it it's now my favourite out of Calpadi's era although my favourite story of his is still to come.

Jade Ellis

Not sure if this is a spoiler, but the Doctor's basically been the President of Gallifrey since the Classic Series -- he just always runs away from the job! LOL

Nicole Mazza

Genuinely my favorite finale. Capaldi is a little more subtle about it, but this is definitely his Waters of Mars moment. Beautifully shot the whole way through. And, most importantly for me, it's all about the agency of the companion. The Doctor loses, but he's also the one who takes the hit himself (as opposed to a Donna situation). And a reference to the eighth Doctor! (And Moffat did at one point confirm that the true hybrid is the Doctor and Clara together).

Trav

when I first watched this episode I felt a bit ambiguous about the ending. on the one hand, Clara revised fate took the edge off from her surprise "true" appearance in the doctor mind, in the previous episode. on the other hand, before the change, there was a moment where I honestly feared I would never be able to watch "last christmas" again because originally Clara was supposed to live a long and happy life. eventually I decided to be happy with her defanged ending, although, now that I seen it through Paula eyes. I think this episode would have been perfect if it would have ended with Clara immediately returning to her death, since it would be a nice subversion of Moffat's usual habits.

tal goren

Me too. I've never got why it's *so* disliked. And Clara and Me going off together doesn't bother me because I don't really think they do much of that. I think Clara goes back to Trap Street pretty much straight away.

LatePaul

I'm very much in the minority, but I enjoy this final episode quite a lot. Yeah,it's annoyingly vague in the Hybrid resolution ' - and Moffat clearly can't let Clara go - but,for me,it's filled with fun moments and quirky scenes. Enough of them to make it enjoyable for me.

Ian Smith

I really enjoy Season 10, it's good.

DarkAshtar

The Time Lords are the top of the society and have 12 regeneration's ("13 silly Doctors" as Matt Smith said to Clara - except he was granted an additional 12). Think of a combo of a Church w/Bishops & A British University divided into lower Colleges - that is how Time Lords rule the planet. The people of Gallifrey do not regenerate. The Sisterhood of Karn once controlled Gallifrey but were eventually driven into exile by the Timelords- they dont regenerate, they use the elixir to live forever.

Mark Ten

Yes! Thank you for that info! For some reason I didn't have that knowledge in my forefront thoughts which then made me internally panic lol - Kat

Time Lord

I think the end would have gone over better (with the general Whovian population) if they had shown Clara walking back through the extraction chamber at the end of the episode, somehow. She could even be wearing a different outfit, to imply she'd had adventures before she went back.

Firefly24601

Is that not sort of the point of the episode though? The Doctor is ruining things by not just letting Clara go and leaving well enough alone. There's no heroic mission here, it's purely selfish and he is told that several times. His obsession with Clara is dangerous and damaging to his own character. The audience is not meant to support his actions, they're meant to be concerned or frustrated. Does that redeem the episode? Not necessarily, but I feel the emotions it evokes are at least somewhat deliberate. Or I'm just BSing to defend an episode I actually sort of enjoyed.

Joel Featherstone

hey just so you know not every gallifreyan living on gallifrey are time lords

William Green

"Get off my planet".

“Let's see how Paula feels” .. well as there’s a surprise return of .. um .. a certain character, I think I can guess ;>

Jim Jobson

Ooof, yeah. From Moffat's best to one of his worst. He just had to ruin his own character's death, as usual and play around with Gallifrey a bit more. It's still got a few scenes here and there that are redeemable, and it's not as bad as The Wedding of River Song, but it's so frustrating to see the awesome stuff Moffat can do, only to watch him ruin it all right after.

Scribbles

Finale time!
