Ah, the Bootstrap Paradox episode (Google it). This should be good.

Meanwhile the use of Capaldi in the theme came across organically. A bit bored between shot setups, and with a guitar in his hands anyway, Capaldi entertained himself by playing it, and eventually seguing into doing the Doctor Who theme. The director turned the sound recording on to capture it, and everyone liked it so much they wound up asking him to record it properly to use in the titles. One last thing though about this story that's a bit melancholy though is that it required last minute rejigging of the filming schedule (filming all the Doctorless scenes first) when Peter Capaldi's mother died and he and his family had to urgently leave for Scotland. Considering its themes, it was probably a particularly challenging shoot for him, under the circumstances.

Peter Nolan

According to The Complete History (Doctor Who is almost absurdly well documented) Whithouse wrote the pre-credits scene basically as a scene-setter for his concept that he didn't actually expect to wind up in the finished episode, and with every new set of notes from Moffat he was surprised he wasn't asked to cut it. In the very first draft though, the anecdote was of a time traveller who accidentally kills Leonardo di Vinci as a child and then feels obliged to spend the rest of his own life recreating Leonardo's life work to preserve the timeline.

Peter Nolan

Let us also not forget him as Pete the roommate Pete in Shaun of the Dead and the "What a bunch of A-holes" Nova corps member in Guardians of the Galaxy.

I think part of the reason for the bootstrap paradox explanation scenes was to head off criticism, because that happens whenever a paradox saves the day in Doctor Who. So, here, they’re saying to that portion of the audience “yeah, paradoxes just happen in Doctor Who. The Doctor is aware of it and doesn’t understand how or why”

Jobard

When Paula asked if they needed the intro explaining the Bootstrap Paradox, keep in mind this is a kid's show at it's heart.

Peter Serafinowicz's IMDB page is one I wished you took a gander at the end there. I'd think you would have been surprised. His done a lot of V.O. work, one I know you've heard, the Agency Head in the Pickle Rick episode of Rick and Morty.

Bruce Bromley

The reason for the bootstrap preemptive exposition... Capaldi + monologue = 🔥 Add in some 4th wall inside an already dimensional engineered space and quintessential 12 scored by an 🎸 That there is the formula for cool.

Daryl

Capaldi really stepped up this season 👍🏼 I mean he was awesome what but he grew into the character (or the character grew into him)

In law they have a saying; there's the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I'm sorry that people conflated the Galifrey Gals' issues with Clara and the actor's perceived attractiveness. Like Katrina said that's a totally unfair assumption and they can fuck off. But it does bother me that their obviously wrong position is acknowledged whilst literally hundreds of people made legitimate arguments defending Season 8 and the characterisation of Clara and we are just totally ignored. Are we conflated with them?! I should change my opinion to suit your conclusions but you won't budge?? What's the whole truth here?! Couldn't the Galifrey Gals acknowledge that maybe mistakes weren't made in Season 8 and that instead choices were made they disagree with??

George Baxter

Theres a video online of Corey Taylor the day he recorded the growl for the Fisher King, hes apparently a big fan of Who so instantly said yes to being in it. Cool 2 parter, grows on me the more i watch it. Looking forward to next week 👀

DeathSwitch

OMG, Paula's a Yeti from Classic Who... And remember Matt Smith - "You named your daughter... after your daughter"

Mark Ten

Or the episode was running short and Peter never needs an excuse for a guitar solo... or maybe not

I think the Bootstrap Monologue was put in because some viewers might have been little confused by the time travel issues brought up in this specific episode. Not so much that they wouldn't eventually understand, because they'd eventually get it.... more so that they wouldn't be so busy trying to figure it out they'd lose focus on the emotional beats at the end of the episode. A bit like how Titanic went through the technical details and timeline of how the ship sank at the very beginning of the movie, so during the emotional scenes you weren't so busy wondering what would happen next you wouldn't be able to focus on Jack and Rose losing each other.

Firefly24601

“Time Lords! Cowardly, vain curators who suddenly remembered they had teeth and became the most warlike race in the galaxy.” Best quote of the episodes & possibly a call-back to Matt Smith and Tom Baker in the 50th anniversary 🤔
