Such a bizarre episode

Dan Williams

commenting from two years in the future, and now with all the recent AI advancements, the computer holo-editing capabilities doesn't seem as futuristic.

Forgot to respond to this but do you remember the howls of childhood despair back in the 90's when they'd yank Trek off the air for weeks on end to make way for snooker during the summer? I also have vivid memories of the Radio Times special looking forward to Encounter at Farpoint, with a spread of the Enterprise herself. I was beyond excited, it all looked so strange and magical!

Peter Evans

I love the next episode!

Brett Delbridge

I remember not thinking very highly of this episode when I first saw it. And whenever I do a rewatch of the series, I usually skip this one. But watching your reactions to it helped me enjoy it this time around. Thank you. I will say that the rest of season four is VERY good. Kat's in for quite a few treats! And not sure if I've said this before, but everyone was so looking forward to see how she'd react to the end of season 3, and meanwhile I'm dying to see how she'll react to the end of this season! Can't wait! :)

Antonio

After looking at the list of episodes, and all the talk of leading up to the end, it occurred to me that everyone was so interesting in getting to the season 3 ending, I don't think I remembered how season 4 will end!!

Joe Concepts

This season is like here’s how to do a bad Geordi episode, and now here’s how to do a good Geordi episode. I feel like the strength of his character is that aside from his extreme engineering knowledge he’s like the “regular guy” in the crew. And I don’t mean that in a bad “Nice Guy” way.

Joe Concepts

I always wondered the same thing. It doesn't seem like he's blind since he lost his Visor then proceeded to get to the transporter room and work the controls.

Brian Moore

One of my favorite Geordi episodes! I like when they have a good mystery. Loved the reaction it was easy to connect to the characters in this one.

Brian Hakala

Always had one question. Was the altered Geordi blind on the surface?

Mark Chrisco

I remember that this was about the time where more people were becoming aware of ST: TNG and more people started watching it. The show got a lot of good publicity out of its Season 3 cliffhanger, and it got even more once it passed the milestone of lasting longer than and producing more episodes than the original series. By the middle of its 4th season ST: TNG had officially "arrived" and more people and bigger names started looking to become a part of it. The ensign across from Data at Wesley's old station was the reigning Miss Universe at the time, and the other two transformed aliens on the planet were a pair of L.A. radio DJ's called "Mark and Brian". I remember seeing an Entertainment Tonight piece about them at the time, where they joked about how they ended up playing "wuss" aliens that only ran away from everything instead of something cooler like a Klingon or a Romulan.

Timothy Hennon

One's own imagination stoked by a fear of what's unseen will always conjure up some terror far greater than reality can.

For a second I thought you were saying Episode 21 was the one bad episode, and I was very confused! When they actually watch it, I'd love for you to tell me which is the one bad episode that's left in Season 4. However, I wouldn't mention even the episode number now, just in case it biases Katrina. She rarely seems to dislike episodes, and it's a delight hearing why an episode I never thought too much of is not actually so bad.

Bluefox

Barring one episode, the rest of season 4 is very strong, which includes one of my favourite episodes of the whole series. To avoid giving any details, I’ll just say it’s episode 21. There is so much to look forward to in what remains if season 4, and indeed the rest of the show. TNG was my gateway into Star Trek in what was a golden age for the show in the early/mid 90’s. Watching over here in England, we had Star Trek on the BBC four nights a week; TNG Wednesday, DS9 Thursday, TOS Friday and Voyager Sunday, all in a prime 6pm slot. We were generally a couple of years behind with the newer stuff, but that’s how it was in the 90’s. We’re lucky enough to get it the day after the US now, and that’s something 7 year old me could never have imagined back in ‘96. TNG didn’t even make it to the UK at all until 1990, so we were playing catch up from the off. While DS9 has gone on to be the Star Trek that I think is the strongest across the board, TNG is my comfort zone, my happy place, and I love watching these videos every week and seeing someone go on that journey of discovery that I went on as a child in the mid 90’s. Star Trek has shaped who I am today, and it always warms my heart to welcome new people into this ever expanding universe.

Matthew Scrivens

Just drop the Geordi stuff.

Jason Faria

I enjoyed this episode, but the next episode is my favorite of season four. I can't wait!

michael mccafferty

I appreciated the less-is-more horror elements in this episode. When Geordi finally gets the holodeck to project an image of the mystery creature, and it’s an amorphous blob in a vaguely human shape, it’s deeply unsettling (in a good way). As long as we’re picking away at the plot conveniences, I find it hard to believe Geordi’s visor couldn’t pick up the aliens’ presence (while a simple UV lamp could). Also, I find it hard to believe that they wouldn’t have tried to capture and examine the other two crewmen before giving up on them. They just kind of take Susanna’s word that they’ve been irreversibly transformed. Did anyone else think of the Susie episode of Seinfeld when Geordi called Susanna “Suze” in Ten Forward?

Artemis Zeidman

This episode was actually a lot better than I remembered. It's also the start of a run of some of my favorite episodes from the series, so I'm excited to see what's coming up.

R. Chang

I noticed they lit the "recorded" scenes similar to they way the first season of TNG was lit. Worked well, with the older uniforms and all.

Firefly24601

Wow, this episode was better than I remember, as usual enhanced by your love and empathy for the characters. The next four episodes are gold, super excited!

JXTN

Do recall that you aren’t supposed to go to warp within a solar system if I remember correctly. So assuming they were traveling at full impulse once they hit they found the shuttle, it is possible they couldn’t get there in time. But yeah. Nitpicking is fun. Hahaha

Anthony Wickizer

I like how Katrina predicted when Worf was going to be like "no response". It was always funny to me how they give whoever they're contacting .025 seconds to reply. Regarding this episode, I really liked the lighting used in the "recorded" scenes, it gave it a very real feeling

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

The aliens probably had to make contact with the officers to change them. The holo deck showed the alien was close to them. Kat gonna love E RL won’t say any more…lol

Brett Whittaker

As for the new crew being infected as the old one did, I assume that now that they know what to look for they can program the biofilter in the transporter to remove the infection before it causes any harm.

Verteron

Some minor nitpicking here regarding the episode. When the Enterprise was in visual range of the stolen shuttle, how fast were they going? I doubt they were pushing their speed to maximum. Seeing as they actually checked to see if they were in transporter or tractor beam range that tells me they were getting close or they wouldn't have bothered checking. Had they sped up they might have been able to stop it. Despite what has been said in a few other episodes we know that ships can go to warp within a solar system. We've seen it before. I guess it's a matter of plot convenience. What about overriding the shuttle's controls? Maybe as it wasn't one of theirs they didn't have the code to do so? And the stolen shuttle pod on the surface, those are really slow compared to a starship. No other ship could have intercepted it? Again, plot convenience. Like how a superhero's powers or abilities seem to fluctuate depending on what the plot calls for.

Henchman Twenty1

I heard this episode was a metaphor for cancer.

Adam Brown

How's this for a bit of trivia: the officer at the helm for this episode is Mona Grudt. Miss Universe, 1990.

Mark Chrisco

I'm having trouble with the audio on this one. The show's audio is turned up much louder than usual, to the point that anyone talking or even some background music drowns you guys out. (You've had it balanced perfectly for a while, so it seems it's a mistake this time.) I initially thought "Oh! They just added closed captioning, so that will help." But it appears not to be present on this video. The only captions are on the show, which I can hear loud and clear. I'd like to request that you keep the closed captioning, an turn the volume down on the show. It's normal for the commentators/rectors to be louder than the show. That's the whole reason to put subtitles on the show itself. It may also save you some copyright issues if you're talking louder than the video.

Bluefox

They used to film certain scenes from The Wire across the street from my apartment building in Baltimore. The production trailers would take up parking spots over 2 city blocks, on both sides of the street. I was glad I paid for a monthly garage spot.

Firefly24601

Probably wasn't good timing that Commander Leijten reminded Geordi that she gave him dating advice. I'm guessing he didn't follow it.
