Comments

Definitely on the list of episodes I don't watch. Scared the crap out of me as a kid. Glad I watched it just for Guinan with the big ass gun.

Dan Williams

one of the few reactions where I felt completely lost as to what you guys were laughing at! haha

uberelder

"Who's this child? This 15 year old?" 😂 Pot meet kettle. 😂

Mr K

Best of the Troi episodes? No, no my friend, have you forgotten "Face of the Enemy?" 😉

Nolan

I very much LoveHate this episode. Perhaps because this might actually be the best of the 'Troi' episodes? The suspense is done pretty well, and the hallucinations are excellent - Crushers morgue one is a definite highlight. The dream tunnel actually had several positives, I think they just needed to get rid of the laughable satire-esque wire-flying and fix Troi's dialogue, the "Where are you" stuff doesn't match up with the contents of the nightmare and don't make any sense until they're an obstacle to be overcome at the end. I found the eery look, the bright binary system, the deep wispy voice and finally the alien apparition otherwise very effective and commendable.

Pirateman

It's weird, I always found this one creepy too. I always find it a bit unnerving when the Enterprise has to just sit there in the inky void and take what's coming to it. I really liked McFadden and Stewart's fraying around the edges. I think it's the intangible nature of the threat too that is unnerving.

Peter Evans

I have the trek door chime as my alert sound on my phone. The best part is the reactions I get from strangers who instantly recognize it. We just nod and smile at each other as if to say "Live long and prosper, fellow nerd."

Antonio

The turbolift next to Picard's ready room was seen before in one of Kat's fav episodes. In the Gals' video for "Yesterday's Enterprise" at 30:44, Data and Tasha enter the turbolift together after Picard finishes briefing the staff that he's going to send the Enterprise-B back to its own time.

Raja

Good call on the door noise. The TNG door noise is one of my phone alerts, but I switched my notifications sound from that to a DS9 Computer bleep.

Kirk Deighton

I was going to say this exact comment. Also I have a visual aid from my complete Official Enterprise D Schematics https://ibb.co/DGfR8XD

SplinterTME

Yep, there's a turbolift right next to Picard's ready room door. :D

Chrissonator

It's rarely seen but there has always been a turbolift there just to the left of the viewscreen. The ready room door is just to the left of that.

Thontor

I actually use the TNG doorbell for my new email sound, the communicator blip for texts and the hailing sound for my ring ton

Thontor

The dream like sequences (which should have been eerie) come off as awkward and cringey. It's not helped that the actress (Marina Sirtis) has a fear of heights and the unflattering camera angle that is placed on her.

William McRae

Next gen does have a few decent horror themed episodes. They never go all out with gore but they make up for it with the music and atmosphere. So so many great episodes still to come!

Brian Hakala

This is woefully late, but Kat that was a fantastic haircut N episodes ago and it is growing in extremely well. Best regards to you both. Thank you for your videos!

michael mccafferty

Huh. I'd never seen this episode in that light before. Certainly, Troi's One line in the dream is bad, and the effects are also bad... but I'm used to Troi getting bad lines, and I'm not one who cares about effects. I've always thought of this as a great, scary episode, and part of that is because I grew up watching star trek, and I saw this episode when I was a kid, and it genuinely terrified me. So now, in the tunnel scenes, I focus on the voice, and revel in the creepiness of the voice. Additionally, I noticed that the two of you could barely keep a straight face during the pauses. Again, I was so focused on what was *happening* to them, the terror of losing one's ability to problem solve in the middle of a crisis, the terror and exhaustion, that I never noticed the rhythm is off, and if you step back into your own body, it begins to sound boring. I've also noticed that I have a tendency with original film and television to try and take it on its own terms, trying to focus on what its trying to say. As a result, the only times when I tend to get really irritated with a piece is when it fails to say well what its trying to, or when its message is... bad. It's really interesting to see how different people view different episodes. My family all take this episode seriously, but, for example, can't stand The Devil's Due.

Arek Schneyer

Yas!!! I've so waited for Katrina's reaction to that dream sequence. And she di NOT disappoint. I seem to remember that the dream sequence looking even worse in the original version. I think they may have fixed it up in the remaster. They would have had the original green screen footage, so it would be possible. I remember Troi looking like an obvious cut out before, almost like it was intended to look bad for comedy's sake.

Bluefox

If I wasn't watching it with Katrina, I would have been bored. But her laughing at it, and Paula's knowing look, made it work for me. The intro is so good, but the pacing is messed up, and none of it came together. It feels as disjointed as the characters are--including the part where they suddenly get more competent to discuss Deanna's idea. I think the idea can work, but the execution on it didn't, even if you ignore the hilarious dream sequence.

Bluefox

I suspect you'd just wind up out of sync, too. They seemed to be in sync with the video when they started. Something in their setup seems to run fast.

Bluefox

Firstly, thank you to the Gallifrey Gals’ chief engineer behind the scenes for switching from the last episode’s open captions to closed captions for this one. You’re the best. Regarding the episode, I find it supremely creepy and a good watch. The scene where Picard thought the turbolift ceiling was about to crush him was a particularly jarring and suspenseful one. +1 to Katrina for calling O’Brien Pissy McPisserson. 😂

Artemis Zeidman

That was an established turbolift door Picard entered, the ready room door was further to the left. Seen here. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/346003183855482673/

My favorite "so bad/weird it's actually good/funny" episode of TNG comes in Season 7. I wonder if it's the same one Paula is thinking about. I "candle" wait to see how you both react to it.

Timothy Hennon

OH, before I forget, while Doctor Who was off the air during most of Trek's 90's run, from TNG, DS9 and VOY, there WAS a moment when the did overlap when "Enterprise" was airing. And the showrunners of both shows DID consider a crossover, though they never managed to pull it off, though elements of it DID make it into an episode called "Future Tense" So there you have it, the on-screen Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover that almost happened.

Nolan

I have an odd soft spot for this episode. Yeah, the dream tunnel was awful, they could've just had Troi wandering eerily lit corridors of the ship instead, btu I always like the hallucinations part. ESPECIALLY with Crusher in the Cargo bay with the dead bodies. Best moment of the episode for sure. I wish they'd pulled more spooks like that, rather than the uh and umming. BSG did a GREAT sleep deprivation episode, but it didn't have any of the hallucination aspect to it. That said, as much as I'm not a horror fan, I feel an odd attachment whenever Trek attempts it. It's never as gruesome as R rated movies can go, which makes sense for network TV, but there's some decent atmospheric and unsettling spooks to be had.

Nolan

Everyone is being very generous to this episode. It's pretty bad and I commend you for being so positive thru it.

Josh G

This is another one on my “skip” list on rewatch. It actually wasn’t as bad as I remembered but definitely not great. I think that part of what makes it stand out as bad is that season 4 is so strong, it makes the bad episodes seem even worse.

R. Chang

Keep up the good work with your reactions, I thoroughly enjoy them. One tiny criticism however, the more recent episodes have unfortunately had video sync issues, it would seem that Katrina is receiving video earlier than what is displayed on the center feed. This has the unintentional result of sabotaging the dramatic effect of each event in the episodes thereby rendering the episodes less appealing to watch. If the sync issue were to be resolved I think the watching experience would improve greatly.

Hampus Theander

I'd rather line up my own copy of the episodes to be in sync with their reactions, rather than the gals being several seconds ahead of the footage provided.

David Brown

"I have failed, Alexander."

David Brown

To boldly yawn where no one has yawned before..... Snooze Trek The Sleepy Generation

Jonathan Emery

Good episode aside from the B level effects dream sequence. The Captains Ready Room is on the right and the turbo lift is next to it on the left in a catty corner layout

Jonathan Emery

I always skip this episode for some reason idk why but it's not as bad as I thought.

Kevin R.

The turbolift Picard entered on the bridge is where that lift has always been, the ready room doors were to the left off-camera.

Jarrod Wild

Because your reaction is slightly ahead of the video, at 21:20 , it actually sounded like Kat was reacting to the stardate update, like complete comprehension of Starfleet timekeeping, rather than the "a total of ten days", which was said after her reaction. :)

Graham Mills

Never understood why they almost never use that turbolift. It's way closer then the one near where Worf is.

Mike

My Klingon is a little rusty, but I think before he was about to kill himself Worf said, "Forgive me, Alexander."

Adam Brown

Picard's ready room and the door he went through at the end are right next to each other. It's just that the door to the Captain's room usually faces the camera during standard bridge shots, and this one doesn't. Usually that door goes to the Battle Bridge turbolift, and sometimes you see "replacement" crewmembers come from this direction when the main characters leave their seats for away missions.

Firefly24601

Ahhh, a non controversial episode, lol.

Andrew Hogan

A few episodes ago they felt that they couldn't trust Data, and now they have no choice. Good thing he is without emotions or he might rub it in. "So. Did you order me to lie to you again? Hmmm? Try and figure that one out while you all go crazy." Also, I love how they just beam blindly into these situations with no idea what's going on or if there's some unknown hazard which might affect them. One thing Red Dwarf had over Trek was their scouters which they could send in ahead. Very handy. Also, I'm glad they showed Guinan. Usually when something weird is effecting the crew I'd wonder if it would also affect her but she is usually conveniently absent.
