Its funny you mention it since the episode of Red Dwarf "Thanks for the Memory" has some uncanny similarities to this ep of TNG.

Ashley

One of my favorite episodes - despite a minor gripe that echoes one of the other commenters above. Picard seems a little too willing to submit to the demands and threats of this species - especially after all they've done to his crew. I get that "working as a team" to eliminate the "clues" makes for a better narrative, but it always kind of bothered me a little.

Red Dwarf is amazing

I remember watching this one for the first time and being very intrigued as to why Data was acting the way he was. It is a good mystery episode. Keeps you guessing. I like that Katrina thought it was Lore posing as Data that was a good guess! Overall it’s a fun episode and from that day on Data is the only one aware of what really happened but can never speak of it.

Brian Hakala

What'll really make you feel old is if you saw some TOS back in the day when the TNG was originally airing. Had the thought TOS was old then? TNG is nearly twice as old now as TOS was then 😳

Bret K

Seeing the red, orange, and green LEDS in Data's brain always reminds me it was filmed before blue LEDS were commercially available, and that makes me feel real old.

Kevin Tipcorn

Firstly, Katrina, you are rocking that new haircut. Regarding the episode, itself, any episode where memory-erasing saves the day always made me uncomfortable. Picard clearly felt that it was a preferable solution to death, and, as captain, he can make decisions for his crew, but it is, in the end, a violation of each crew member’s bodily autonomy. Again, I understand it’s a better option than death, but it’s still very unsettling how it’s treated with such little weight. It’s like, “Hey, violate the minds of me and my crew, if that’s what it’ll take for you not to kill us.” Troi certainly had residual trauma from being possessed that the memory wipe didn’t cure. If she has another disturbing hallucination, it might be helpful (re: treatment) if she knew why. As for Data, I think the writers valued plot convenience over what he would have actually done. Data has proven that he has strong ethics and, while I can accept that he would strive to honor the captain’s orders, especially to safeguard his friends and colleagues, I don’t think he would have continued to lie, especially when Picard ordered the ship back to the mystery planet. At that point, Data would have spoken with Picard in private, told him what happened and made it clear that if they returned to the planet, they might be killed. He couldn’t have realistically believed, at that point, that his silence was protecting anyone or honoring the spirit of Picard’s order. Katrina also made a good point about Guinan’s appearance being wasted. There was no reason to bring her in for the episode’s setup and then have her completely hidden for the rest of the episode. I appreciate some of the episode’s beats, including the one Paula pointed out when we’re not sure if Picard was subconsciously drawing on a hidden memory when he decided not to go back to the planet again, but I have to give this episode a D. Definitely one I avoid if I’m flipping channels and it happens to be on.

Matthew Zeidman

I thought it was instinctual. An indirect relation to the erased memories but, yeah, pretty much the same as you said.

PIG

Sometimes they do an opening scene that isn't totally related to the rest of the episode as filler. This one had "mystery" in it, plus I'm guessing they only had Whoopi for a short time during the filming of this one

I feel the same way that Paula did at the end, when Picard hesitates a little in ordering the probe. In my head cannon, I feel like they left Picard's memory intact as well. At least partially. It would be like having an extra assurance that the rest of the crew would not become suspicious of Data in case other clues were discovered. Since Picard is in command, he could help Data deal with any such occurrence. Also, just wanted to say that I like Katrina's new hair style.

Antonio

I was debating mentioning this too. Who knows what’s going on in other people’s lives but it seemed to be a bit of an afterthought. Who knows..

Andrew Hogan

The ominous music while holding focus on Data kinda gives it away, too. :D

Firefly24601

Within context yes.

Andrew Ramos

Derision, sadness, excitement, etc... Those all seem plausible reactions to something you're watching.

Firefly24601

In this episode, Data gets his own version of "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one" when Picard is telling him what might happen to him.

DragonWolf Entertainment

Katrina is either mocking TNG or crying over it....if only there was an in between....she's starting to perform rather than react....

Andrew Ramos

Have you Gals ever considered doing Red Dwarf? Patrick Stewart became a big fan of the show after discovering it by accident.

Henchman Twenty1

Data's explanation that there was a time dilation effect on the wormhole would still bear that out though. "WE were only unconscious for 30 seconds, but due to the wormhole, we missed/skipped 4 days"

Nolan

As was mentioned in the reaction we're almost at the halfway point for the series, so I'm not surprised that Kat is figuring out the the underlying plot, mind you her experience does send her down the wrong path every so often.

Colin 3of5

Replicators are wonderful things, they probably destroyed every living thing and replicated younger versions of pretty much everything. Oh Katrina, Star Trek should ALWAYS leave you thinking in the end. =P (Lovin' the shorter hair, BTWs)

Nolan

I enjoy this episode a lot. I’m not a huge fan of the next one. I think being a fan of Dr. Who and the fact that Katrina has seen a bunch of storylines from other shows gives her a bit of a head-start on figuring out the episode. When these stories were coming out when we first watched them, they were still fresh ideas that hadn’t been rehashed a million times. Now, it’s like, been there done that, so I think it hinders the surprise element a little.

Andrew Hogan

I personally hate writing where the outcome is that "basically nothing happened". It seems like an exercise rather than a real episode. I still enjoy parts of it, just not the overall concept and the feeling I get at the end.

Patrick Armbruster

Kat has gotten so good at figuring out what's going to happen, it's kinda nice seeing her totally lost thinking it's Lore. 😁

EricH86

Yeah, this episode kinda falls apart towards the end, but I still love it!

Eric

Ever since it originally aired, I’ve had mixed feelings about this episode. I both love it, and I hate it . I love it because it’s just a fun mystery, that unfolds slowly as Data’s shady involvement is revealed. And it involves messing around with time, which is always cool. But I hate it because it’s completely unbelievable. Let’s review: Data resets the ships chronometer to show that only 30 seconds have passed. Then when everything happens again, the clocks are reset once more. So now two whole days have elapsed, despite what the ship’s clock says. Surely the first time they contact Star Fleet they’re going to find out that everyone else in galaxy is two days out of sync with the Enterprise’s clock, and crew. It just doesn’t hold up. Still a fun episode. Just doesn’t work.

Mark Steckel

I know that the crew's options were limited, but how comfortable would you feel letting a totally unknown alien race render you unconscious? Alternate Ending: After going through all the effort of removing all the clues the crew awaken in chains deep underground in a Radium mine. Picard: "Thank you, Mr. Data."

Henchman Twenty1

OoOo, one of my faves. Been waiting for this one.
