Hmm Azula isn't usually so bad at talking to people. The episode plays it like she's out of her element, but I wonder if her forthcoming massive paranoid breakdown is beginning to build up here, just because she was sent away from the Fire Lords big secret meeting.

I'm actually in the middle about this one. Firstly, I'm a sucker for movies where a group of friends stay in the same house for a weekend and all sorts of personal drama goes down, and this was that. Even before Paula said it, I was thinking this ep was "Breakfast Club" (but with "Terminator" interludes) and I liked all the character bits that came out during the party, because they were showing rather than telling, but the beach scene wasn't as well done as Breakfast Club in their confessions. Zuko's revelation wasn't really a surprise and he didn't go any deeper to make his admission noteworthy. And Ty Lee's revelation came out of nowhere - it's not like it suddenly made us look at her previous appearances and think, "Oh, this is why she's like that!" Honestly, her backstory wasn't very interesting to me. Also, trashing the party at the end didn't feel right. I thought they were going to reveal their identities and make the popular kids grovel - to show Zuko et al retreat back into their comfortable, more powerful roles as royalty, because they're shielded in those personas, after having experienced a moment of vulnerability.

I'm a year late to watching your reaction to this series, but I personally adore this episode. I do feel like the beach scene is perhaps slightly rushed though. I still love it a lot, but it feels a little forced when it needed a little bit of time to breathe. Maybe an extra minute or two, so it's not just one character after another expositing about their traumatic lives. Also, I really like Zuko and Mai's relationship. I feel like they have really good chemistry, and I know perfectly happy people like that in real life. In my opinion it's just their unresolved personal issues that make it feel off. If you're unhealthy personally, your relationships also probably aren't going to be super healthy either. I don't think any relationship either of them could be in would look very good at this point in their development.

Basically this episode to me boils down to - Horrible people have problems too, cry me a river.

I don't hate this episode, and it definitely has some interesting/cool/funny moments. BUT I feel like it blows the beach scene by having so much of the dialogue be so on the nose. It's like every character is going to tell you exactly what they're thinking and what the source of their issues are, I feel like there's a version of that scene somewhere that's better by being subtler and giving less away directly. But also, as Katrina says, it would probably be a lot longer.

This one definitely grew on me with repeat viewings. Not that it super matters but Ty Lee and Azula are 14, Mai is 15 and Zuko is 16. So they are a bit younger than they appear in the show (it's something I always forget). For me it just adds to how messed up their childhood's were (and still are because they are still a few years off becoming adults)

I think one of the telling moments is during the beach when Ty Lee gets upset is Azula expressions the fact she shows she cares about Ty Lee, but plays it off the moment Ty Lee looks at her. She's just as afraid as Mai to show she cares.

Yeah I've noticed when it comes to The Beach, it's either a really good episode to some people or a very cringey one. I think the last scene where they screw up that guy's party seems a little misplaced given what the writers were going for during the beach scene (empathy). My favorite development here is with Mai honestly. The way she blows up at Azula, it really shows the tension and resentment in their so called "friendship".

Geno

I must say, I didn't like it when I first saw it, but this second time around it was a lot better, really painting how effed up these kids were.
