Genesis of the Daleks Part One, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! Ep1

Something a little different this week! As Katrina prepares Paula for the 50th anniversary episode of Who, they watch some classic Doctor Who! The next few weeks the Gals will be jumping into some classic who, and a journey through time and space leading up to their reaction of the 50th anniversary special!

Genesis of the Daleks Part One, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! Ep1

Comments

Carrie!! That's so cool!!!

Time Lord

Tom is my Dad's favorite Doctor, so for christmas one year I knitted him that scarf!

Carrie Schwent

Yessiree, you can't beat a good ol' quarry to studio switcheroo😄

Brodie Vickers

Tom Baker will always be My Doctor! I started watching the show after graduating from middle school in May 1980. Mom wouldn’t let me stay up late to watch it before then, since the PBS station in Chicago showed it at 11 on Sunday night. Most stories were four episodes stitched together, so the show usually finished around 12:35 am. After graduating, she said it would be my choice if I wanted to be tired in school on Monday. My sister and I went to a Doctor Who convention in Rosemont, IL in 1982, where I met Tom Baker and even kissed his cheek!

Kathy A

I saw "Talons of Weng Chiang" when it was first broadcast. I must say I assumed from the beginning that the character of Li H'sen Chang was intended to be based on the real life William Robinson - a white American magician who performed in London as a character called Chung Ling Soo. He died on stage when his performance of the Bullet Catch went not quite to plan. Many of his props are now on display at the Magic Circle museum near Euston Station. The whole yellow face thing is a sad blot on what is otherwise a Robert Holmes masterpiece.

Vernon Harbin

Yeah, the 'yellow-face' didn't age very well, but otherwise it's a great story! :)

Nicole Mazza

Kat mentioned they saw Adventure in Time and Space recently, and I know they plan to see the minisodes.

Malcolm Wolf

My favorite of the Baker era was The Talons of Wang Chiang. A ripping good Victorian Sci Fi horror yarn. Maybe a bit dated... possibly Racist for today... but worth a look... Teaching the savage Leela table manners alone is worth it

Mark Ten

I hope we get to see you both react to the Minisode before the 50th and are you going to watch 'An Adventure in Time and Space'? A perfect time to watch it!

Nikk Roy

He was most excellent in Allo Allo 😀

Sufyaan Kazi

Paula had the best reaction "It feels like Doctor Who ....The Doctor (feels) younger" Thats why most people say Tom Baker is the best, by lightyears. You watch him and you know, right from the start, thats the Doctor, no doubt.

Thomas88

You muggle.... the scarf was invented by "Madame Nostradamus" :P

Thomas88

15 feet long - the scarf

Matt

Really good story - great choice

Matt

I have had the pleasure of meeting the man on a few occasions - such a gentleman, so kind, so naughty.

Matt

He truly is an absolute legend

Matt

Mad Uncle Tom is My Doctor ❤️

Matt

Good Moaning

Colin 3of5

That was so much fun, i have only seen the pilot episode of classic who and never any from the 4th. This answers a lot of questions.

Amanda Logsdon

A little story about the scarf. The producers had decided to outfit the 4th Doctor in the style of a famous Toulouse Latrec lithograph of Aristide Bruant- wide brimmed hat and scarf. So they bought a whole lot of different colored wool and gave it to a woman named Begonia Pope, who didn’t know how long they wanted it so just ended up using all the wool they had provided. They loved it, so kept it as it was. And you’re right, Tom carries off the scarf with tremendous flair🧣😀.

Lloyd B

The grins on your faces discussing the episodes says more than words can :-)

Ddraig

I think I recall them mentioning watching it. It was third classic show that was voted on.

Malcolm Wolf

Paula: “It’s not very Doctor-esque to go back to the genesis of a creature and, like, stop it from ever being born.” Katrina: *is very glad she already has a finger on her mouth* (Must … not … say anything!)

Ka Man Chan

As I said on YouTube, pleasantly surprised by this, most likely will also pay off too once we get into a certain two parter for Capaldi. Does this also mean we get Brain of Morbius? It would tie in very nicely with a certain minisode for the 50th (Sisters of Karn) ... Not to mention another double episode for Jodie Whitaker 😜

Sufyaan Kazi

The first actor that Paula thought she recognised - the character is called Ravon and is one of the Kaled soldiers who captures them at the beginning. The actor is most popularly known for his role as Lieutenant Gruber in the brticom Allo Allo, He does have a small Star Trek connection - in Enterprise he plays Malcolm Reed's father in one episode. Oh, and his name is Guy Siner

Bill Roland

Not a minority at all! Harry was great, and really deserved a longer run. I love his relationship with SJ (always getting a ride out of her by calling her “old girl” in that slightly posh polite English tone 😊). The three of them were great together.

Lloyd B

IM DEAD 😆😆 - Kat

Time Lord

I've always loved how shout-y they make the Kaleds in this! It's easy to see how they evolved into shout-y Daleks (the actors even use similar speech patterns)! Definitely not much of a leap! 😆

Nicole Mazza

I'm not gonna lie, I've always shipped Harry and the Giant Clam. 😆😆

Nicole Mazza

Also, I know I'm in the minority here, but I think Harry Sullivan is a very underrated companion. But then it's hard to compete with his contemporaneous companion Sarah (Jane), as she's a huge fan favorite.

Nicole Mazza

Just had to pause to say, I'm loving your comments about the outside location, as they're probably just in a quarry, which is Totally A Thing in Classic Who. In fact, it became a bit of a running joke as time went on. Classic Who is almost always in quarries! LOL!

Nicole Mazza

your comments about British actors of the time and being evil in uniforms, their joke was unrealted but it made me think of Mitchell and Webb "... are we the baddies??" :)

hrcaffee

This one awesome story as your first into classic Who and Tom Baker is one of the best Doctors in classic (next to Jon Pertwee)

Oliver Horsley

The opening to most of Tom Baker's episodes is the one I grew up with, and remember most. Nice to hear the old "dum-dee-dums" once again. :)

Firefly24601

I believe what Sarah Jane is wearing are called culottes.

LatePaul

Also in Star Trek “enterprise”

WhoIamisme

Guy siner has been in lots, the crown and a pirates of the Caribbean movie, best known in the Uk for allo allo.

WhoIamisme

So happy you're watching Genesis of the Daleks! One of the very best stories of this era. This is from Tom Baker's first season, and it's funny how you say he seems so much less erratic than modern Doctors, because at the time he was regarded as very much so. But that was coming off from Pertwee, who was suave and very patrician. Also, Tom was the youngest actor to be cast in the role at the time, being 40, and he had such a dynamic energy when he first appeared on screen. His first appearance had some really loopy character moments, but he is more serious in this story. It was also around this time that conservative campaigners started protesting about the level of violence and such in DW. Also, so good to see Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane. She was adorable, and such a great performer, and she and Tom grew to have an amazing chemistry and worked so well together. And I'm sure I wasn't the only kid who had a huge crush on her at the time (I would have been about 12 or 13 when this came out)! Can't wait for the next 3 parts!

Lloyd B

Since you were focusing on her outfit, here's something I thought you'd enjoy, Sarah's (im)famous Andy Pandy look https://www.pinterest.com/pin/313211349059163857/

Mark Ten

You’re starting with the best, hope you enjoy, 😊

WhoIamisme

from the sounds of it I imagine May-June time

BrightHeart

Think it’s great that you’re reacting to come classic, but I’m just wondering, when might be the 50th reaction be?? Don’t want feel like I’m pressuring you!!

Daniel French

Glad to see you doing this one, it is a classic Classic (or Classic classic?). The story is a bit grim, others in the Tom Baker era are a little more light hearted. Hope you enjoy!

Mark Ten

I don't particularly care for this story, but I'm here to support my Gals. 😁❤

Amy Chlebus

The Doctor that I spent most of my time with, back in the day. Never was able to understand why the PBS station where I watched it always showed it at one o'clock at night. As if it was a show full of naughtiness.:-)

Bruce Bromley

Great, I have been revisiting some classic lately.
