If you find yourself in jail, exercise is important to maintain morale. It can be about the only thing nobody can stop you from doing, if your imprisoners are determined to crush your spirit with inactivity, isolation, distracting noises or whatever. Little survival tip.

This episode is a personal favorite of mine. The scene I love is the scene where Sokka is asking to learn and says he doesn’t know if he’s worthy. When Master Piandao says “Let’s find out how worthy you are together” I just weep. It brings back memories of being an Acting student and thinking I sucked and did t belong there. I had a conversation with a professor who basically said the same words to me and it changed my life.

Sokka's a great character; he's the quintessential inventor/strategist/romantic who's also a complete and lovable goofball. Sure, he was a bit arrogant and naïve in the beginning, but like the others on Team Avatar, he grew into himself and became something more; a seasoned individual who sees the world for more than it appears on the surface. Would that more of us could develop a cosmopolitan attitude like Sokka's at such a young age. Makes me wish I had traveled more as a kid (a couple of trips to Baja California in Mexico when I was in grade school hardly qualifies me as "well-traveled")...

I love this episode SO MUCH! It’s culmination of Sokka’s entire character arc. He’s no longer the kid who brags about being the best warrior in his village. Now he kneels before a master and says he doesn’t know if he’s worthy. Sokka even rejects the approval of a male authority figure he respects, something he’s craved since his dad and all the other men left to fight in the war, because he lied and didn’t feel he deserved it. I love Sokka. Also this completes Sokka’s Avatar journey, having learned fighting styles from all four nations. And Fun Fact: it’s revealed in a tie-in comic that one of master Piandao’s former students is none other than Zuko.
