Sarek, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S3ep23

The episode where Katrina finally understands what live long and prosper really means for her. A great episode to Get Warped.

Fun trivia fact: the shot of the majority of Picard's monolgoue was an uninterrupted take for most of it. So everytime something was off, Patrick Stewart had to redo the whole thing from the top. They had to do it several times. It was emotionally exhausting for him, but he done did it.

I enjoyed Paula and Katrina’s reaction to the Geordi/Wesley fight, especially Paula’s when Wesley broke out the holodeck insult. It’s almost like that line was written from a fan’s perspective.

Once this is finished, far into the future, it would be great to see your reaction to the Honest Trailer for TNG?

Jack

A long time ago Kat asked what episode of Season 3 we were looking forward to, and I, like many others, gave her an exhaustive list of like 10. This one, I described as "some of Patrick Stewart's best acting on the show." and I feel like it holds up to that. lol

I feel like you need to do ST3: The search for Spock right now

Having to deal with your emotions and ride them out is an important part of being human I would say. However, one of the important parts of the Vulcan psyche is why Vulcans suppress their emotions rather than let themselves experience them and Katrina may find it interesting in understanding the importance Vulcans hold on the sacrifice of the experience of their emotions. Vulcan emotions are very intense and almost destroyed the Vulcans long ago until they started to adopt pure logic. This is around the same time that the Romulans and Vulcans split. It's interesting that the Romulans, keeping their emotions 'at the surface', did not destroy themselves after leaving Vulcan. Personally, I see the suppressing of emotions by Vulcans to be similar to different meditation experiences for real. It can help to centre the emotions and have it as something that can be controlled rather than controlling us. For Vulcans, the control needed was intense that I see it that their control compartmentalises their mind with the emotions buried in a little part of their mind. Enjoying rewatching TNG with yourselves. Makes for a great experience and cannot wait for some future episodes.

I haven't been posting responses cause I've had other stuff going on, but I am so excited for this next month.

Everything that needs to be said about this episode has been said. With that being said, I’m really curious to see how attached she’d get to the other shows. They all have a certain camaraderie between them, and the relationships between certain characters are really what drive the shows. All I can think if is how they’d react to Sisko in Far Beyond The Stars, or Janeway in Year Of Hell, Archer in The Expanse, Kirk in Wrath of Khan.

Andrew Hogan

They've recorded reactions to some TOS episodes. Not sure which, nor when they'll be shown.

It's the cruellest thing, you have my sympathies. My grandmother had a tumor that took away her personality and replaced it with something else in her final months. I was only four and my parents carefully shielded me, but I sensed a lot of anguish at the time and it manifested in some pretty strong re-occuring nightmares I still remember. Hugs.

I agree that it’s better with the knowledge of who Sarek is. But even without that it’s a great episode. I was like 10 when this came out and I still clearly remember watching this episode for the first time and how powerful it was. And yeah I had no idea who Sarek was in the grand scheme of things, but the episode/actor does a great job still giving the character the weight it needs to carry that feeling.

Anthony Wickizer

Weren't you gals going to react to some original series episodes? I was really hoping you'd view "Journey to Babel" so Katrina would have more background before watching "Sarek". Still, loved her reaction as always.

Raja

When you two get around to reacting to some of the classic episodes, l do hope that you include one with Sarek . Watching this hopefully cemented it as one of your choices.

Bruce Bromley

We're all gonna cry on this one.

Anthony MacEwan

This reaction was EVERYTHING. Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden, and Mark Lenard were in top form this episode. As always, it is a particular bonus of being a patron (a Gallifrey Pal) that your reactions include an industry insider's perspective. So, yeah, Patrick Stewart going ALL IN during his scene, and Gates McFadden playing off him like a tennis pro is magnificent for a layman like me, but particularly awesome to hear about your perspective as well. I also like the great character detail that it's Beverly, not Troi in there with Picard, despite Troi being a counselor so helping someone through an emotional breakdown being her literal job description. Picard and Beverly's relationship is a treasure, even with the various romantic teases.

Joshua Gosdin

It was a given that Katrina would lose it during the post-meld scene. Sir Pat was remarkable, and Gates' minimalist performance was excellent as well. I agree with Katrina, as a sufferer of major depressive disorder, that there are times I don't want to hear people trying to tell me how to fix myself. I just want someone who will listen and comfort me.

Jarrod Wild

As a fan of the original series as well as TNG this was such a great episode to watch. My grandfather suffered from dementia and alzheimer's before he passed many years ago now and this episode brought back memories of how e suffered. Such a well done episode.

Man, one of my favorite episodes. Lots of emotion on display from lots of different people. And of course, Picard's onslaught of emotion at the end is one of the best scenes of the show.

Can someone point me to where i can find access to the discord? I might be a dummy but i cant seem to figure that out...

Robert Norton

I'mma sidestep all the emotional baggage of this ep and bring up a sneaky set construction trick that's given away if you look closely. The corridor outside the senior officers'/guest quarters looks like it has another similar set of quarters on the other side, but on the other side of that wall is actually Ten Forward. (The replicators behind the bar are on the backs of the "doors" in the corridor.) This is usually hidden by careful blocking of shots, but here we have the walk-and-talk with Riker and Worf down that corridor, then around the corner into brawl in Ten Forward.

Ken Quick

Oh so that was real, I was thinking my eyes were playing tricks on me.

Mike

I was so worried Katrina would not understand the importance of Sarak as a character due to not wanting spoilers. Thanks Paula for quickly filling her in without giving anything major away :)

Mike

In the ending parts of this episode you are reminded that Patrick Stewart is a great Shakespearian actor and master of the stage.

My grandmother passed away from Altzheimer's, when I was 37. The last time I saw her she asked me if I had a boyfriend because she thought I was about 13 or 14. She also asked me why I walk the way I do. She had completely forgotten that I have Cerebral Palsy. It hurt me a lot. I had to deal with it all in my own because that's how my family deals with things. I'm 48 now, and I still think about her from time to time.

It’s a pity about the inverted image of both of you
