Definitely one of the best

Dan Williams

This is one of my favourite episodes of TNG Season 3! I know it's random but when you've finished the TNG Series I really hope you react to the Star Trek movies with the TNG cast, because they are epic!!

Daniel French

I was amused at your reaction Katrina when Tam Elbrun beamed over, didn't take a Betazoid to read your immediate thoughts of, "Eurgh! This guy!" as he got to interrupting our Galaxy Class buddies. I'm so glad though that he bucked the trope of visiting arrogant experts being taught lessons by the crew, and that we found there was a lot more to him, and that it was the crew of the Enterprise who needed to understand. I really liked this episode. A good ticking-clock, a nice sense of threat, but ultimately a kind of uplifting tale. I really liked the character of Tam Elbrun, you can hear the fuses snapping as he's assailed by the thoughts of everyone around him. In a sense it's a constant violation for him, he can't shut anything out. Yet he can't share anything, his very gift of telepathy alienates him as he can't relate beyond the immediacy of thought. My hat is doffed to Harry Groener who I feel pulls of a difficult role. He has to be damaged goods, self loathing and loathing of others, yet with a innate decency at his core and an awakening sense of curiosity triggered by Data's unreadable presence. Troi gets a bit more to do in this one, and I really enjoyed her scene just talking with Tam. It's also a relief when a guest character gets to have a meaningful conversation with Troi and not be an ex-boyfriend or someone trying to put the moves on her, or her on him, or something. It's interesting how although she understands the pain Tam is in, she fails to divine what he is after. Maybe the concept was too alien to her as Troi has made the sharing of emotion and dialogue the wellspring of her life - for Tam it's the stuff that's virtually killing him. Some great production in this one too. The score switches between restful new-age pan-pipery and martial themes in quite an entertainingly subtle way when Picard is taxing Tam about the alien's intent and his own regarding the destruction of the Romulan ship. The Tin Man design is pretty memorable and the bit where it defends itself was genuinely impressive. I also just pure love the Romulan Warbird design. It's a vessel that looks as if it could legitimately take on the Federation flagship and win, so you always get a heightened sense of threat just by its presence. I always figured they were bigger owing to carrying a troop contingent, being more militaristic and expansionist than Starfleet, those shoulder-padded ne'er-do-wells. Anyway, quality episode and fun reaction! Thankee! Stray thoughts: Being a Northerner I always couldn't resist adding a bit to Worf's line about the Romulan star-empire in my head. "The Romulans claim all that is in their field of vision, like a Yorkshireman at a buffet." Anybody else noticed that stars are really unstable in the Trek universe? They're always about to explode. Geordi's actually really bad with names. He calls all his engineering crew 'Russell'.

Oh God, now I understand the living hell!

SPOILERS! Swee... sorry, wrong series. Please Kat: GO AWAY. (said with much love of course) Paula, have you thought about when you will watch Classic Trek? Not immediately now but soon-ish in seasons 5 and 6 there will be two guest star appearances from Classic Trek (Unification Part 1 & 2 and Relics). Wouldn't it be more fun for Kat to actually know who they are and why it was a big deal for us Trekkies back then?

Frank Voight-Kampff

The effect for the chair that Tin Man 'creates' for Tam was made by reversing a time-lapse sequence of a melting wax chair.

Geordie Joe

I was thinking the exact same thing!

On the website version of Patreon on the top right hand side you should see your icon, click on that then go to "my profile settings" On the top of that you should see "apps" where you should see an option to connect to Discord. The Gals are most active usually around the days they post videos, but they pop on and off also during the week when they have a spare moment to reply to messeages etc.

Malcolm Wolf

So missing the Gals' personal thoughts on Patreon these days. How exactly do I find them on Discord? I'm having a bit of trouble.

Bruce Bromley

I didn’t have much of a memory of this episode, either. +1 to Paula for the Oasis reference.

Artemis Zeidman

Next 3 episode are some of my favorites, can't wait. Can't wait to hear Kat's thoughts on Barclay.

EricH86

Getting Farscape vibes from this episode. You girls should watch Farscape.

It would be like being force-read every internet comment non stop.

The Australian-American sci-fi show "Farscape" takes place aboard a living space ship. I strongly suspect that you would both like that show. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farscape

Those censors are so frustrating for you aren't they? Well, you can thank them for driving one more person into the waiting arms of your Patreon!

This is the first time we see the down side of being a Betazoid, especially one that developed the power at an early age. It reminds me a bit of the film "Scanners". Thankfully without the exploding heads.

Bruce Bromley

While Tam explains and talks about his condition with Deanna and later Data (so we as viewers understand him), he's basically just an impatient jerk towards Riker and Picard. I think they'd have reacted differently to him if he ever gave them at least a chance.

Patrick Armbruster

I remember him most from the sitcom he was on right before this episode aired, "Dear John".

Bruce Bromley

This is an episode I fondly remember in same vein as the alien intelligences in the 1st and 4th Trek movies. Completely mysterious form of life that's so alien that you can't rely on the universal translator to communicate with it. The music is so memorable and blends perfectly with the theme. Oh, and a bit of trivia. Captain DeSoto who gave the crew that briefing at the beginning, was Riker's previous captain. It was Riker's refusal to allow DeSoto to beam down on an away mission that impressed Picard enough to recruit him in the pilot episode.

As a neurodivergent person I love this episode. I empathized and related sooooo much to Tam, feeling and thinking a certain way, unable to express my thoughts correctly or coming off inappropriate, strange, or even rude because I did not know how to act. Most of all though I understood the sensory overload Tam felt, and how easily he could get frustrated. I am a bit disappointed in Picard and Riker in this episode however, while their concerns about Tam are 100% valid, they are both unnecessarily rude and dismissive of him throughout the episode. And while both are like that at times, they typically show more empathy, or at least understanding towards other problematic but not overtly villainous guests on the ship. In this episode though, neither at any point seems to have any sympathy or understanding of Tam's condition

This is one of my favorite episodes of the season, if not the show. I love the high-concept sci-fi, the treasure hunt vibe, and the way the Enterprise just gets thrashed. Mostly though my two favorite things are the soundtrack and the theme of the episode. For the soundtrack, this is one of my favorite non-Ron Jones soundtracks. Jay Chattaway came out swinging, and it paid off! The whole score is so theatrical, tense, exciting, and moving. As for the theme, it's all about connection. Data and Tam get to play with what makes life worth living, and they save Gomtuu by showing it that there is still connection. "Getting to know somebody" is what Tam loves about Data, and that's what he gets to do with Gomtuu. "What holds a person together" Crusher wonders at the beginning, and we learn it was the meaningful connections Tam kept seeking, including Deanna (I love that he calls her Dee). And finally, our connections can help us create a sense of belonging, which is what Tam teaches Data. Lovely, like a beautiful song.

Joshua Gosdin

That Data, he'll get you every time!

The actor who plays Tam, Harry Groener, is the classic guest star. Comes in for one and knocks it out of the park. He has an excellent role on Buffy. I wonder if Tam ever comes back to Starfleet? Obviously he wouldn't come back anytime soon after the episode, but maybe when he's older; he and Tin Man can come back, go to Betazed, and Tin Man can help Starfleet, There might be a novelization in there. This is one of my favorite episodes, I want so much more of the history.

Kenneth

Good Episode though. Definitely different in tone but still good. Fun fact the "Tin man" sound that you heard was a recording of digestive sounds. Interesting how sound engineers go about creating sound effects.

Jonathan Emery

Running out of Chapstick is "Moist" Unfortunate :D

Jonathan Emery

The Batezoid version of autism. I loved his interactions with Data.

John

I don't remember much of this. Just the alien that looked like a pinecone to me at the time.

Firefly24601

The sounds inside Gomtu were recordings of a PA's stomach digesting pizza.

Ken Quick

I've always loved this one...feels more like a compact theatrical film than a TV episode.

Jarrod Wild

This was a bit of an underrated episode of the season, in my opinion. I'm looking forward to seeing if they recognize this guest star. ;)

Neil McRae

As I've rewatched with the gals, there have been episodes I remember not being crazy about when I was younger but have learned new appreciation for now. Before I hit play, I hope for this being one of these times. :)
