Cold War, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! S7ep9

Trapped in a submarine thousands of leagues underwater??! That's a definite nope from the Gals! The Doctor and Clara find themselves facing off against an old school Doctor Who villain, but maybe he is not such a bad guy.

Cold War, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! S7ep9

Comments

she is really going to hate later storylines. I have a bad feeling about this one. Smith needs to leave for Clara to get a chance and by then she might be too hard by then.

Jonathan Andre

Yes, it is. We like it like that.

John

I mentioned him! But just in the context that they kept conflating him and Josh O'Connor's character. 😉 (I've seen Norton in a few things -- 'Happy Valley', 'Death Comes to Pemberley', etc -- but have yet to check out 'Grantchester'. Have heard good things, though.)

Nicole Mazza

With all these actors being recognised no one's mentioned James Norton. He's pretty well known in the UK from things like Grantchester which I've never seen but is a cozy mystery series I believe. I mostly know him from Happy Valley where he plays a terrifying character. You ever want to traumatise yourself then watch Happy Valley. Seriously though, very dark but extremely good drama.

Paul Mason

THIS. I'm really not getting how Clara is seen as more 'rushed' than any other companion. 🤷‍♀

Nicole Mazza

I think you're being harsh on Clara. Yes she might feel a bit rushed, but this is already her second adventure after joining the Doctor and third overall (fifth if you count her other versions). She's defeinitely not new for the Doctor now. And it's not like other companions took their time - Amy saved the day and literally went against the Doctor's orders in her first episode after joining the TARDIS; Donna persuaded Tenth Doctor to save Caecillius and his family also in her first episode after joining; and Martha forced Tenth Doctor to open up about his past at the end of her second episode after joining. So Clara is by no means an exception.

Oh, and Piotr was killed by Skaldak in the beginning (when he broke out of the ice). The guy you kept thinking was him was Onegin played by James Norton. :) P.S. Again laughing at how many people from 'The Crown' in this and all from the major characters: Matt (Prince Philip young), Toby (Prince Philip older), Josh (Prince Charles)...

Nicole Mazza

Yeah, I giggled when she said she was old. I was born in 1973, myself.

Nicole Mazza

AND OMG I HAVEN'T WATCHED THIS IN SO LONG THAT NOW I RECOGNIZE JOSH O'CONNOR THIS TIME! He plays Piotr in the beginning, who lets out Skaldak from the ice with his blow-torch. Josh O'Connor is MUCH more famous now -- mostly as Prince Charles in 'The Crown' S3-S4!

Nicole Mazza

He was such a GREAT Unbound Doctor! <3 <3

As a Classic series fan, this has so much I love in it: the TARDIS using it's HADS (not seen since the Second Doctor), the Ice Warriors returning (not seen since the Third Doctor -- though they were mentioned in 'Waters on Mars'), etc. I tend to find Gatiss' scripts on the lackluster side most of the time, but this one always entertains me more than I expect. And it certainly helps that the cast is SO GREAT. And that I grew up in the 80s, so I'm TOTALLY HERE for the cultural references (especially as I was a HUGE Duranie -- Duran Duran fan). As for Clara, I still don't see the Doctor's treatment of her as particularly different and certainly not a 'replacement' for Amy and Rory? If that was the case, every companion would be a 'replacement' for the last. The Doctor is (usually -- Martha was an unfortunate exception) pretty present with his current companion and cares pretty hard for them pretty quickly. Remember Madame du Pompadour, for example? And it's not even romantically most of the time -- I was just rewatching 'The Lodger' the other day and the way the Doctor cared for Craig when he was ill in bed, making him tea, and being really tender with him was pretty much the same way he was with Clara in 'Bells of St John' when she was unconscious...and most people didn't take the Craig and Doctor interactions as romantic. I don't know. It's just that the show needs to move on or it stagnates. The Doctor still has the Ponds in his heart, but he has to go on in his life. Otherwise the show wouldn't be much fun to watch, IMO.

Nicole Mazza

I'd like to join that Society! I'm a MASSIVE Clara fan! <3

For those who don't know David Warner has also voiced an Alternate Universe Doctor (Big Finish Audio) His Doctor is the 3rd Doctor who is exiled to Earth in the 1990s not the 1970s. This Doctor also goes to have adventures with Bernice Summerfield (a companion of 7th Doctor as well as a precursor to River Song)

Paul Ring

1983 - the year before Paula was born. And the year I graduated High School. Man, I'm old.

John

I know the Doctor has saved the world a lot, but under normal circumstances, if you've just saved the world again, you can brag about that being the thing you do. The Doctor has had a lot of time, possibly decades, to get over Amy.

Stephen Ray

This is a good first impresion for the show. 1. Cat in frame 2. Buy our merch 3. Hi yall <3

Tehho

Who has gun training? That so USA, lol

Matt

Man, the YouTube edits on that reaction series are gonna be... A LOT. :D

Firefly24601

This wasn't an episode I thought I would enjoy as much as I did. I'm not typically a huge fan of Cold War/war in general episodes, so the fact that I like this episode as much as I do is a welcome surprise to me. Probably still not one of my favorites, but its not one I would dread to rewatch. I agree that every companion has that moment where they feel a bit too at home too soon, but the way Clara expressed it rubbed me the wrong way a bit. Don't get me wrong, I like that she's finding a place in the Tardis, but there's just something about that scene that kind of made me somewhat annoyed.

Kbex

This is one of those episodes that I never remember as a favourite but always quite enjoy when I re-watch. Plus it's got David Warner, who amongst a long career played Evil in The Time Bandits. I think I am going to have to start the Society for the Promotion of Being Nice to Clara. She's not that bad, and she gets much better!

LatePaul

Cold War is also one of the episodes I haven't seen in a long time, it was great rewatching it with you gals! (Though I must say, I've no problems with submarines myself, but your anxieties rubbed off!)

Ka Man Chan

As Paula was explaining how she recognised Tobias Menzies from Outlander, it occurred to me that perhaps that could be their next fan-newbie reaction series, where she takes Katrina through. Especially considering the character Jamie Fraser in Outlander was inspired by the 2nd Doctor's companion Jamie McCrimmon. Anybody else up for that?

Lloyd B

Yes indeed! And among David Warner's many, many credits was the 1976 horror film The Omen, which also featured Patrick Troughton (Doctor #2) as the priest.

Lloyd B

This episode is kinda so-so for me, but the reaction was great!!!

Firefly24601

This is one of my favorite Clara eps

Aleph Sharp

I guess my pop culture references are too old, as am I, probably. They're watching sci-fi, talking about recognisable actors, and nobody mentions David Warner?
