2021-02-27 15:58:02 +0000 UTCThis episode is so fun. I ADORE Zuko's theme. It always pulls me in. The storming the palace is always amazing cause it's just like "Oh you've got legions of fully trained earthbenders? We've got Toph and Aang." Zuko's dreams are so interesting to interpret. Cause there's the image he had of himself, the Avatar's pursuer, and there's the action he took, freeing the Avatar's bison. The first dream shows him on his father's throne, in his father's place. One dragon sounds like Azula, telling him to rest, to fall asleep, to cease watching. The Other dragon sounds like Iroh, telling him to escape from this place, from the throne of his father. It seems to me like if Zuko became Firelord, Azula would always be waiting for him, desiring the throne, lulling him to sleep before attacking. Whereas Iroh of course has always encouraged Zuko to free himself from his father's expectations, to leave behind the poisonous thought before he can think nothing else. And then of course there's his second dream, showing his own fears at his past actions. He fears that he is changing, that he is becoming like Aang. And when he awakens, the first thing he does is not feel for his hair or look in a mirror, or firebend, but is to reach for the scar given to him by his father, reaching for a hated thing from a hateful man. It's like "This scar is who I am. The most important thing for me to check is that it's still there. I am burned by my past, but I cannot stomach the idea of leaving it behind. I need it." Of course, this is just me. I am interpreting much to much, as is my wont. I just love dream sequences, and these are so full of symbolism.
