Comments

I don't know if there is an episode of anything, even when Rose Tyler gets stuck, that I cry more for.

Dan Williams

Her question about two hands... When I got to really meet my nephew, when he was old enough to have a personality and talk, or more, when he got to meet me, the first thing he said to me, early in the morning, was, "Uncle Dan, I have two hands!"

Dan Williams

I absolutely hated the Get A Job song, was like the one song on that album I skipped, but I busted up immediately understanding the reference as soon as it was dropped. Life is better with musical references.

Dan Williams

This episode aired the day I was born!

Glen

Quite possibly my favourite TNG episode. Certainly the one I've rewatched the most times. So many brilliant moments on display from several actors including comedic by Frakes with his one hell of a directorial debut as well. But Lal fleeing to Troi's quarters and her breakdown is the ultimate moment, what an amazing actress.

Pirateman

I wish they could've kept Lal as a recurring character for a few episodes before killing her off. Her character had some great potential. Imagine an episode where Geordi falls in love with Lal. I wonder how Data would've reacted to that scenario. "Commander, what are your intentions toward my daughter?" He didn't seem impressed when he caught Lal and Riker kissing in Ten Forward, so imagine his reaction seeing his best friend kissing her.

Geordie Joe

I’ve seen this episode countless times and had no idea the same actress who played Lal also played Lizzie McGuire’s mom. Paula for the win with this week’s trivia.

Artemis Zeidman

That actor did a bang-up job of playing both the hard-nosed Admiral who knows best, and the emotional man of feelings who just didn't understand until it was too late, and regrets it.

Firefly24601

SOMEONE has to play the baddie... :)

We had a special Holiday treat for Trek fans as one of our lovely moderators and patrons surprised Katrina with a special message from Gates, https://www.patreon.com/posts/special-holiday-45266725 you can watch the full reaction here!

Hey guys. So, what did I miss? What’s all this about Gates knowing Katrina’s name? Did I miss something just humongous?

Data Episodes are the best. They explore humanity and what it means to be human so well. Datas strive to be better is so inspiring, because many people don't. If you want to change the world start with yourself and the world will change around you. I LOVE Data Episodes.

Red Claw

"Until I realized, it is the struggle itself that is most important. We must strive to be more than we are, Lal. It does not matter that we will never reach our ultimate goal. The effort yields its own rewards." Never fails to tear me up, Data's speech is so wonderful and true ❤

Brooke Hill

Kat and Paula! I had no idea you were trained in Meisner technique! :) I am too haha through Mindi Logan, an old student of Bill Esper.

Jonny Moonsliver

See, now this is MY favorite Data episode (second favorite of all time). I love it so much!

Bekah

So, Data remembers the experience of kissing Riker.

David Brown

I've been waiting since Season one for this episode. This is my absolute favorite. This one always makes me cry my eyes out, but that's a good thing.

Amy Chlebus

I can't watch this one without balling my eyes out! The ending is heart breaking.

Kevin Martin

Picard really does get the best speeches. It's crazy how much Patrick Stewart elevates the material, too. Also, while Data may not have human emotions, you can't tell me that he's completely emotionless. He clearly has very real and deep connections to people and even things that are not purely based on logic and calcuation.

R. Chang

I think that any emotional impact would have triggered it, and it was just bad luck that the first emotion she felt was fear. If the flaw had been "feeling fear" during a critical phase of her neural development, you could control for that and they almost certainly would try again. But if the flaw was "feeling *anything* too deeply" during that critical phase, you cannot simultaneously control for that and continue to teach her about the world. Even if you kept her in a completely safe, sterile environment, what if *boredom* was the emotion that triggered the cascade?

michael mccafferty

Katrina crying so much that she hides during Yesterdays Enterprise. Paula: "Todays episode is The offspring!" Me: here we go again...

Daniel

I've seen this episode a few times, but just had a thought I hadn't considered before. In the episode, it's insinuated that the cascade failure was inevitable. But the timing of when Lal's emotions and the cascade failure started was right after her "interview" with the admiral, which visibly upset her. So … did the admiral kill Lal by traumatizing her with the threat of being torn from Data? Or was at least the precipitating factor, like maybe any big emotional impact would have caused the cascade failure, and the admiral just happened to be the first one to cause her to feel strongly?

Robert Hill

I can't even think about this episode with out my eyes welling up.

Jason Faria

When the admiral walks out and tells Geordi, Deanna, and Wesley that Lal won't last much longer is when I turn into a weepy mess. First of all, they are Data's family! Of course they are waiting outside like they are in a hospital waiting room. Second, when the admiral says, "His hands..." I'm gutted. Imagining Data using all of his superhuman abilities to try desperately to save his Beloved absolutely slays me. Data loves, even if he can't feel it.

Joshua Gosdin

I have to say that absolutely broke my heart to hear Katrina say that her own father wasn't there for her in the way he should have been. Makes me want to give her a big hug. :-(

Zegron

There is an interesting aspect of this episode that I would have never considered before the last few months. Gender Identity was certainly touched upon, though I don't think he writers were really aware of that issue much at all during this period. But in the last couple years we have seen people getting blowback on the news and social media for claiming racial and/ or ethnic status that they aren't borne into. And here, we have a character getting to pick and choose race (I would assume she / he/ it could have also picked ethnicity as well). A lot of very progressive people are very much against that. I am not sure how I feel about the issue one way or another.

Mark Wood

There are people who can't process emotions, but you can still learn the behavior (if inclined) to mirror the best about humanity. Data is a near perfect example of this.

Mark Wood

Not much to say on this one, it’s pretty flawless and straight forward. It wouldn’t be Starfleet without a misguided Admiral.

Andrew Hogan

Data Demonstrates that love is not just simply expressed by emotions but, maybe more importantly, through actions. The choices we make in any relationship is very telling to others about how we regard them.

Jonathan Emery

The ending of this episode is such an emotional gut punch. It's fun rewatching thus show through your eyes. Such a good episode.

thereelnerd

I do love many many parts of this episode. Data's "does that not describe being a parent", and of course Lal's "I feel it". It is certainly one of my favorites, though there are so many ones that are just as good or better its hard for me to rank it exactly. Your reactions were wonderful to watch as always! Two episodes with extreme crying one after the other has got to be kinda rough. Star Trek is often at its best, in my opinion, when it asks questions about philosophical points like what makes a human, or delves deep into emotion and motivation. Which is of course what science fiction is supposed to do: use science to ask questions about people.

In my head canon, Data can feel more than he realizes. To me that explains why he makes a lot of the choices he makes. The next Data centric episode has one moment where data does something really small but I think speaks a lot about the kind of person he is or at least wants to be/be seen as.

EricH86

"Thank you for my life." 😭😭😭

Firefly24601

This is one of my favourite Star Trek episodes. I'm not emotionless when watching Star Trek but there are not many that can make me physically cry. One of the others would be Duet from DS9 series. (Don't know who else would agree with that). Most of my favourite episodes are such because of the great acting in them. Not easy to whittle down when you have greats like Patrick Stewart but, Hallie Todd was amazing in this episode. We have all been really scared or terrified at some point and the shaking and the feeling you get in the area of your sternum is so relatable with the way she portrayed it.

Joshua Langweil

"An episode like this to follow the episode we just watched..." Yeah, and next week's is another home run.

John

Of my five favourite stories in the whole of TNG, two come one after the other :)

Ian Smith

I have been so hype for getting to this episode, it is easily one of my personal favorites particularly these three being lest week this one and the next one. Keep on being great and enjoying :)
