Just felt like watching this again, and yep - I cry every time. (and at various points)

Ben Chan

Hi from three years in the future! This is a great episode and you can really see Patrick relishing getting his acting chops round this one. It is a fantastic story and one delivered very well given the time constraints. To nitpick only very slightly, it does all feel that most of the secondary characters are just playing themselves as in the Prime timeline - so basically Geordi and Wesley - though they do have limited screentime. They don't really seem to be characters that are on the losing side of a 20 year war. Data is Data so understandable. But nice to see Frakes Riker is a tectchier (Don't call me tetchy! You know what happens when you call me tetchy! - Red Dwarf S5 spoiler there!) version that is butting heads more with his Captain. Makes it a more believable alternative version of a possible Federation. Anyway, great to see a really angry Picard again...... "THERE... ARE... FOUR... LIGHTS" (Is this a spoiler or have you now got past this one?)

David Shadwell

The whole time I'm thinking about next time...... Unification, I think it is....

Dan Williams

Shooter McGavin!!!

Shawn Gates

LOVED YOUR COMMENTS LADIES! If you love time travel Katrina, why don't you guys watch Misfits?!?!

Shelly

Definitely one of the best TNG episodes. A couple I would rate higher but this one was stellar. You touched on so many of the reasons why. The stark change in aesthetic and the production quality put into the timeshift, the authentic romance, the Picard intensity, the high and visceral stakes, Tasha's return and performance, and the heart-wrenching meaningful sacrifice.

Pirateman

Kat and Paula! Since in the most recent Get Warped, y'all discussed Whoopi Goldberg being inspired by Nichelle Nichols (who played Nyota Uhura in TOS, pronounced Knee-Oh-Ta Oo-Her-ah) I thought I would share this interview on youtube of her talking about the time she almost quit Star Trek until she met Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who persuaded her not to. And the other famous story, in which she talks about how Star Trek presented the first interracial kiss on national television, thanks to some creative sabotage from William Shatner to make sure it happened despite the suites objections to it. They're about 10 minutes long and definitely worth the watch youtube.com/watch?v=pSq_UIuxba8 youtube.com/watch?v=3hKKkGhEDoU

Jonny Moonsliver

Season three is where it gets great, and this is one of the best.

James Miller

A good introduction for who we are talking about. However I'd also recommend the 3rd and 4th films to really get the character and the reverence that Picard and rest of the crew give to him.

Colin 3of5

This is exactly why I became a patron and what sets you all apart from the countless run-of-the-mill reaction channels. Seeing Katrina become so invested in and touched by these characters is like seeing TNG again with new eyes, and the joy Paula gets from introducing her to each new chapter is truly contagious. Keep up the good work!

Artemis Zeidman

One of my favorite things about y'all's videos is how y'all bring an industry perspective into your thoughts on these shows. Hearing y'all gush about this episode is one thing, but watching y'all glom onto Denise Crosby and Christopher McDonald's performance felt extra awesome and not something that's often discussed in the Trek fandom. I appreciate y'all and can't wait for more!

Joshua Gosdin

Ok Paula what brand of Earl Grey did you have, mine was Black so maybe it was to strong compared to others.

Christine Ester

My go to tea is Ginger or chamomile. Tried Earl Grey for a while but its to much for me.

Christine Ester

It would be great to see some reactions to some TOS episodes. Not the entire series, but maybe some more important or 'lore informative' episodes to get a better picture of star trek's past given some TNG episodes will be on their way dealing with them. Things like related to Vulcans, Romulans, and the history between the federation and Klingons. (Also important past characters.) Otherwise, Awesome reactions!! I look forward to Tuesdays given you two. You shouldn't stop and go through all of them to Enterprise! (Other series that were looked down at the time on ended up being amazing after rewatching them. )

Weapon26

Dunno if she'd be on a troop carrier though. She'd probably be in an Intelligence unit of some kind. Edited to add: She may very well have been on the ship, but I don't know that she'd be on the bridge for any reason. On a troop transport she'd have an office closer to the troop barracks.

Firefly24601

Another aspect of the episode that went unmentioned due to all the emotion of having Tasha back was not only did Worf disappear from the alternate timeline but Troi vanished as well. You would think having even a half Betazoid empath on board as counselor would be as beneficial on a ship during wartime as it is during peace.

Bruce Bromley

Regarding Goldberg, a slight correction/addition to her Star Trek story. You are correct about the absence of minorities in sci-fi at the time, but it speaks more broadly to the depiction of minorities and black people on television in any genre at the time. Uhurua was not a servant or assistant or comic relief, but a valued equal colleague, and an elite specialist: "Well, when I was nine years old Star Trek came on," Goldberg says. "I looked at it and I went screaming through the house, 'Come here, mom, everybody, come quick, come quick, there's a black lady on television and she ain't no maid!' I knew right then and there I could be anything I wanted to be."

JXTN

This episode could have been a movie, by the quality that it is and how much they put into the sets and uniforms, etc. and yes, definitely in my top 3 favorites. I'm so glad Katrina loved it, despite the emotional weight of losing Tasha again

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

If you look in the conference room on the Enterprise-D, you'll see a lineage of past ships named Enterprise, including the Enterprise-C, though that ship looks a bit different than the one we saw on screen here. (They had to simplify it a bit for time and budget reasons). I'll also recommend that you watch the Original Series episode "Journey to Babel" as soon as possible, as it may be connected to an upcoming episode...(though you may have already seen it by this point).

Neil McRae

With a THIRD essential episode right after that!

Neil McRae

I'm a little surprised that this is Paulas favorite episode. It's up there in the top 20 for me but not top 10, I look forward to seeing the reactions for the rest of the series. Thanks gals!

Jason Faria

It's hard to believe that this episode and The Offspring are back to back. Two of the best episodes of the series in such quick succession.

Ross Holditch

I'm not a guy who hands out five-star ratings easy. An episode, or a film, truly has to be special and defining to make it - a genre champion if you will. Even on my other all-time favourite science fiction TV series, Babylon 5, there's less than ten episodes in the show's run that I feel truly achieve that full gold-plated five star status. Lots of four stars, but very few five stars. This episode of Star Trek easily attains the five stars and from the background history of how it was put together, there's a sensation of miracles at work. Everyone is on their A-game. Every actor. The score. The direction. The nuanced script. As you say, the incredible feat of making us care so much about about relationship quickly forged in the uncertainty of war. There's such a sense of underlying dread playing against the romance, the themes of sacrifice and comradeship. All these emotions playing off against each other, they strike such sparks. Denise Crosby is so wonderful in this, it's about her but her performance is so restrained and only heightens when it's required to really sell a moment. Both her and the director are fully aware that this story is something really special and they can't afford to overplay their hand. For me, it's in her eyes when she realises what Guinan's saying in Ten-Forward. Tremendous moment. Christopher McDonald is likewise excellent, believably inhabiting his role as a young lieutenant on a mission of peace and unprepared for war, but willing to take any help he can get to save his ship. Together they are like two newfound lovers adrift on a piece of wreckage, doomed yet living so intensely for each other. Tricia O'Neil is also brilliant. In the few minutes afforded her we get the impression of a Captain worthy of the ship Enterprise, who could stand in ranks alongside Kirk and Picard. Tricia O'Neill also plays the Earth Alliance President in the Babylon 5 TV movie 'In the Beginning.' She has one scene, one speech that she delivers begging that the captains and pilots of every ship still capable of fighting make one more stand in the orbit of Earth. Not to win the day, they all know they're dead already. Not to save Earth, they cannot. But to buy time for more and more ships to evacuate so that humanity can carry on someplace else, another day. It's one of the most potent scenes in the show's history and a real tear-jerker, and I'm always mildly astonished that movie and TV producers weren't crawling at her door begging her for more. Yeah, I could have gone for a few seasons following that Captain and first officer. I guess the fact there wasn't only makes their moment even more magical. Lightning in a bottle indeed. I'm glad this was made with such restraint and relying on the emotions at play. As Kat says, it's astonishing how much they make you care in so little time about people you've only just met. Every moment in this episode is earned, every revelation utterly sold. When Picard admits - one Captain to another - that the Federation has six months to live, you feel it. That fear playing behind the calm mask he faces the crew with. His willingness - the Federation's willingness - to take that gamble, because logically it's their only option. I love how we don't see Worf. Why would we? It's an admirable exercise of restraint in the show, as adding him would reduce this taut, tragic, moving tale to a mirror-universe gimmick rather than a terrible emotional echo of an event that never happened. I love how underplayed it all is. They all play it as the situation of their reality dictates, trusting in the script and story, knowing the emotion is there. Even the relationships on board don't play as in the regular show. They're abrupt, businesslike, operating under immense stress. And I'm not ashamed to say that I cry too during this episode. It's potentially up there during the man overboard in the storm sequence in Master & Commander, when they have to hack at the ropes and send the young man - their friend and crew-mate - to his doom and the Vaughan Williams symphony 'Theme on Fantasia by Thomas Tallis' kicks in, or that bit at the end of Blackadder, or when it suddenly stars snowing again on the bridge in 'It's A Wonderful Life' - a film which, in a sense I guess this episode shares an odd kinship with except for the fact that the James Stewart classic is about a meaningful life while this science-fiction classic is about a meaningful death. Phew. Anyway. Wow. Is this the best episode of Star Trek the Next Generation? I'd say possibly. There's a definite strong contender I'm thinking of ahead - plus a few other plucky pretenders, but I can fully see why it's Paula's favourite! Now please excuse me, it's terribly dusty in this room... it's getting in my eyes... *honk* *parp* *blub*

Peter Evans

I started drinking Earl Grey tea because of Captain Picard. When I was younger, i never heard of tea other than black tea so the first time i went to a restaurant and asked for Earl Grey I was surprised they had it. LOL

e com

Great reaction and episode. First time we see an ambassador class ship I believe, its one of my favorite ships in TNG

GreyIrohNee

Apparently Worf was originally going to be the Klingon Capt. that demanded the Enterprise surrender. I guess the show writers thought that was a little too on the nose and so they went with a generic Klingon voice. The Enterprise C was not the enterprise that came after Kirk's. That would be the Enterprise B which has not been seen on screen yet. One of the early drafts for this script involved Spock's Father and a call back to an original series episode. This version would have seen the Federation at war with the Vulcans instead of the Klingons

Jonathan Emery

This used to be one of my favorite episodes. It’s fallen off a little because I’ve gotten older and really enjoyed some of the deeper episodes I thought were boring when I was younger. I enjoy this episode because they kill of Tasha again, lol. Sorry fellow fans, just not my cup of Earl Grey. Apologies if Denise Crosby sees this. I really liked the first death also because it was senseless and that’s how death is at times. The writers did get a chance at a redo here though and they wanted it to be an apology for writing it so poorly (their words), the first time. Shooter McGavin !!!!. Christopher McDonald has been in a bunch of shows/movies, most notably Happy Gilmore. Upon rewatching this for the 100th time, you do pick up inconsistencies such as Guinan even being there. A bartender on a warship?, I guess that’s the best time to drink. If Katrina loves time travel stuff, they better check out the other series. Personally I’m not a huge fan because it just becomes a huge mess that you can’t get yourself out of, but, to each their own. One huge spoiler down, about 20? more to go.

Andrew Hogan

I thought they figured it was too much and it would be too expected to use Worf and that it would take away from being Crosby’s episode. I believe that’s what I heard in one of the many behind the scenes shows/clips.

Andrew Hogan

Great reaction gals. Very much enjoyed going through the feels again with you. With all the attention going to Tasha's return, the writing, etc. (rightfully so) I just want to say I do so enjoy the relationship between Guinan and Picard. I loved those scenes between them. And Patrick Stewart's acting in those heavy scenes with Guinan and Tasha is so engrossing. You can see the wheels turning in his head, the gravity of the situation and decision weighing on him.

Pickupthepieces76

Thank goodness Narwhals live in salt water cause there will be so many tears next week.

EricH86

I love that you both loved this episode. I am looking forward to seeing what you think of the next one though. I think Katrina will like it, if I may say so. Have a great week gals, and see you in seven more days. :-D

Matthew Berry

I recently read that the introduction of Guinan's sixth sense that can detect timeline alterations was Michael Piller's idea. It was his way of addressing the problem of the crew not realizing that anything had been altered since their own history was part of what was altered. Katrina was right to expect an alternate timeline Worf in this episode. The original plan was to have Worf demand the Enterprise's surrender at the end. But due to time and budgetary constraints, they settled for an unknown Klingon voice calling for their surrender instead. David Carson -- the director of this episode -- would go on to direct the first TNG movie. He also directed the series premiere of DS9. Christopher McDonald -- the actor who played Lt. Richard Castillo -- had auditioned for the part of William Riker years before.

Tuesday...

EricH86

How is it as pointless? Yeah maybe if you just shoved the Enterprise C back though to blow up, that might have been enough to show the Klingons that the Federation are honorable in coming to their defense and avoiding the war. Or maybe Tasha's skills allowed the C to hang in the fight long enough to impress a Klingon survivor of the attack which helped turned Klingons into our allies. It's not whether her presence had any effect on the out come that matters, it is that she died in a meaningful task.

EricH86

Small point of correction: Enterprise-C didn't immediately follow Capt Kirk's ship. Kirk commanded the original NCC-1701 and NCC-1701-A, but Enterprise-B was commanded by Capt John Harriman.

Raja

And Uhura wasn't always on the comm's console I forget the name of the episode, but I distinctly remember her taking over the Nav console on the bridge when I think it might have been Chekov had to leave the station.

Colin 3of5

Kat - "I don't know how they're going to top this? ST: TNG - "Here. hold my warrior's drink." :-)

Bruce Bromley

1 of my favourite episodes, mind you, so is next weeks. Still this weeks reaction/episode are outstanding. And a fitting send off for the character, fighting to save the helpless and the federation on the bridge of the Enterprise.

Colin 3of5

Paula and Kat, a well known bit of lore for us old Trekkies. Nichelle Nichols. Uhura was going through the first season of Trek much like Crosby and McFadden were in TNG. Thinking her part was pretty slight. All she seemed to say was "Hailing Frequencies, open" She also thought about leaving. During a break in filming it was Martin Luther King that talked with her and told her the impact she was having with people and convinced her to stay on the show.

Bruce Bromley

This is an episode that the producers, writers and actors thought wasn't going to work. It wasn't until they saw a rough cut of the episode the realized they had a winner. They thought it was going to be a mess. Another episode written in almost no time was first seasons Heart of Glory.

Mark Wood

Let's make sure history never forgets the name Tasha Yar

Colin 3of5

We can go back and forth if Tasha's "death" here is just as pointless as it was as in "Skin of Evil". I was just thankful that we did not have to see it again. The one thing that could have made it better though, would have been to have Worf at the end that Guinan ask about Tasha, and not Geordi. I'm sure Worf would have known more about her and it would have made a nice bookend to the beginning of the episode..

Bruce Bromley

Been so waiting for this since seeing your reaction to "Skin of Evil" And as someone who grew up on TNG it is so incredible getting to see someone's first time reactions who loves the show. It's making me love my favorite show even more. So when we see Guinan just after the time line change in Ten Forward you hear on the ship's speakers someone being called to "Cetacean Ops" This is the first time it is ever mentioned. And it will be brought up again in a few episodes. We never get to see it but it's written about and even put into the official Enterprise blue prints that they have Dolphins and whales (Or Aquatic aliens) on board who are supposed to help with ship navigation.

EricH86

Love this episode!

Jonathan Emery

In an interview,Jonathan Frakes said he couldn't make head nor tail of the script;and even after he watched the completed episode,he still couldn't figure it out :D This is absolutely my favourite episode of TNG as well. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it! I love Tasha's dawning realisation of her fate;and Denise Crosby delivers one of the finest, most tragic ,performances in Star Trek's history.

Ian Smith

Denise Crosby did get done dirty in S1, she was so underwritten. It's ironic to me that maybe her best written episode was Symbiosis which was shot *after* Skin of Evil.

Jarrod Wild

There's a great out-take of Castillo telling Tasha what he'd prefer she call him. I've never really been able to wrap my head around the idea that the E-C travelling into the future "changed" the timeline. In my mind, (swirly transition effect notwithstanding) the story shifted vantage points from the timeline in which the E-C had been destroyed, to the timeline they encountered after exiting the rift in which they have not yet been destroyed.

Ken Quick

Executive Producer Rick Berman has stated his one regret about this episode is that he didn't save the story for the first TNG movie.

Mark Chrisco

I believe in a very early concept of this story they had actually considered making this episode crossover with the original series crew. Because of scheduling, budgetary reasons and a lack of interest from many of the series original cast it never came to fruition. I may be wrong on some of the details as I recall reading this somewhere many years ago.

thereelnerd

Man oh man. What an episode. One of my favorite final lines/moments of the series.

Arek Schneyer

Exactly why I tried it. Didn't like it, but I wouldn't have even gone THAT far without Picard! :)

Firefly24601

What a powerful episode AND reaction!

John

Loved what Paula said about Earl Grey. Just had a meme in my FB feed about it this morning. A pie chart on "Why one drinks Earl Grey". It was 10% - "Because it Taste Good". The other 90% was -"Because they want to be like Captain Picard". :-)

Bruce Bromley
