I remember the first time my cousin and I saw this episode, we spent so much energy trying to figure out what that small cute meat animal was. Cow goat? Bear goat? Deer cat? Then it went like: Aang: Oh, a sabretooth moose lion cub! Us: Umm what was that Sokka: It doesn't look like a sabretooth moose lion. Us: Ummm Aang: How you doing little buddy? Have you lost your mama? Us: UMMMM Sabretooth moose lion mama: Rar Us: Well the kids had a good run Two of the biggest land mammals that ever lived combined in one. I hope whoever thought of that got a raise.

It seems like a perfect metaphor. To bend lightning you have to separate yourself from your trauma, or divide the energies and whatnot Iroh talks about. Azula would have no problem with that cause her whole psychology is in pieces. And redirecting lighting from someone else is only possible if you're at peace and in balance with yourself much like you have to recognize when others' aggression is just their own trauma lashing out. Though I wonder how it works in Korra where lightningbenders do drudging work in factories all day, without making an overly ham-handed metaphor about the soul-crushing aspects of industrialization. . .

I liked Iroh's "sense of humor" (as in humors of the body) joke. :) Love me a good pun.

Has anyone ever thought about how good the medical care might be in the Earth Kingdom? Because getting constantly hit by rocks must do some real damage.

Loved it! I was doing a rewatch recently, paying attention to the themes behind the plots, and this episode was where it clicked for me: lightning is a metaphor for trauma in this show. When Iroh is teaching Zuko to redirect it, and warns him of the dangers of letting it touch his heart, I was reminded of the consequences of abuse. Zuko believes his abuser right now because he took his father's words to heart. Iroh tells Zuko to redirect the trauma out of his body, but Zuko isn't ready to do that introspection y'all mentioned. At the end, when he is on top of the mountain, he's not just yelling at the storm; he's yelling at his abuser. "You've never held back before," he says. The lightning-as-trauma metaphor holds up for every subsequent appearance it makes in the show imo. Thank y'all for these, and happy New Year!
