The God Complex, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! S6Ep11

This week our episodes have parallel themes! Does the Doctor have a God Complex, Paula will find out this episode, in another creepier episode for this season, about a hotel where every visitor's room contains their deepest, darkest fears. What lies in wait in the Doctor's room?

The God Complex, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! S6Ep11

The bit near the end in "Amy's Room" with little Amelia and the Doctor telling her to finally see him as they really are is truly one of my fave Doctor Who moments. The Doctor and Amy's story is all very Peter Pan and Wendy and I loved watching Amy's progression through all that from her idealistic view of the Doctor when she was little, to her 'What is the point of you?' moment in 'Amy's Choice', up through here, where they're finally on more equal footing. JUST SO GOOD. (And also reminiscent of another fave moment of mine from 'Curse of Fenric' in the Classic Series). <3

I think you might be right, but that make no sense considering that they got the invite in their past

tal goren

And the episode ends at the house Amy and Rory were in at the beginning of the season when they got the invite from the Doctor, after not seeing or hearing from him for months.

John

According to Matt Smith, Moffatt told him that The Doctor's room was a long corridor in The TARDIS with eleven sets of gallows. The first ten being occupied by the dead staring bodies of his previous selves. The eleventh set empty and waiting.

As for Classic Who recommendations, might I suggest at least one story from each of the first 8 Doctors. Personal recommendations would be: 1st Dr - An Unearthly Child (first ever episode) 2nd Dr - either Tomb of the Cybermen, The Enemy of the World, or The Invasion. 3rd Dr - Terror of the Autons or The Three Doctors. 4th Dr - so much to choose from, but I’d definitely say Genesis of the Daleks, and maybe Brain of Morbius or City of Death. 5th Dr - Caves of Androzani. 6th Dr - Vengeance of Varos 7th Dr - Remembrance of Daleks 8th Dr - The Doctor Who Movie (only choice really, at least in terms of TV). And of course, it is essential you watch An Adventure in Time and Space as you approach the 50th Anniversary Special.

Amy's faith seems a little bit too easy to break. Other than that, a good weird episode.

The colorful houses could have been on Portobello Road, in the Notting Hill neighborhood of Kensington.

Firefly24601

If you're looking for Classic Who recommendations, I am going to put forward The Brain of Morbius. 1) super-awesome Classic Who intro 2) 4th Doctor 3) Sarah Jane 4) lots of stuff that comes up in New Who (eventually)

Firefly24601

The classic wasn’t that great either, three deaths, many had too much, he left one without asking and then there was Mel who he manipulated to go off with a villain

Steven morgan

That is a good episode, but I’ve just realised that annoying intro is going to ruin things in the later episodes but ho hum. Any way I’m sure it’s Kensington as Paula would have remembered Knightsbridge or at least knight. But onto classic who a lot of people wil suggest unearthly child, please don’t this is not a good jumping on point, there are many great stories ( if your going to do it though you’ll have to watch the whole story not just the first episode the show is meant as a serial the first episode is just a teaser) I suggest Rememberance of the Daleks ( great for nu who fans) Genesis of the Daleks ( this one you definitley have to watch the whole serial as the most memorable part ) Tomb of the cybermen The aztecs Green death City of death Five doctors Three doctors And so much more

Steven morgan

not the best episode, the ending had some feels though

GreyIrohNee

Do what you gotta do in terms of quarantine ladies! The majority of us love watching whichever way, and are glad you are being safe!

This episode didn't really sit well with me the first time I watched it not sure why. I've actually come to appreciate more watching it through other reactors eyes. The ending is certainly so well done though. These characters have grown so much, the goodbye is definitely heart felt. Paula is the first person i've heard to mention the little noise 11 makes during the hug which totally gets me too. Old Who wise, it may not be the best episode, but surely it must be An Unearthly Child? Episode one where it all began. Would enjoy seeing An Adventure is Space and Time though, that is SO beautiful.

Daniel Reynolds

This is one of the episode openings most ruined by that stupid BBC America intro. In the original showing, the policewoman's scream merged seamlessly into the start of the opening theme, making for one of the most effective teasers the show has ever had. "The God Complex" has a lot going for it: it starts out seeming like a "monster of the week" episode but gains unexpected depth as Toby Whithouse draws a revealing connection between the minotaur and the Doctor. The design and direction are excellent, the guest characters interesting, there's a creepy atmosphere and a great monster. (Unlike most large monsters seen in Doctor Who, this one can actually run instead of lurch -- the sight of the huge creature pounding down the corridor towards the camera is a particularly memorable image.) I've always found it a hard episode to love, however, because of its frankly shabby treatment of Rory. We've seen Rory grow and mature enormously over the last year, becoming an equal partner with Amy and getting many opportunities to show his own courage and intelligence. But this episode isn't interested in exploring Rory's relationship with the Doctor -- his faith in the Doctor's ability to save his friends (or lack of it, which would be understandable after last week's events). It's as if all the character development for Rory since Whithouse's last episode ("The Vampires of Venice") never happened. Rather than being the capable husband, Rory regresses to being the hapless boyfriend dragged along for the ride -- the butt of jokes, as the Doctor calls him "Beaky," or he gets pushed to the ground by the minotaur only to get up with "What hit me -- was it Amy?" Arthur Darvill, as always, makes the most of what the script gives him (he gets a few moments of empathy with Howie, for instance), but there are many scenes where Rory is just sitting passively while Amy gets all the dialogue. His best moment is probably the "You said that in the past tense" foreshadowing of the ending, but even that ending short-changes Rory; he gets distracted by a shiny new car the Doctor has somehow arranged before being sent off into the house so the Doctor and Amy can have their talk. It's a beautifully written and played emotional parting (well, except for the line "Maybe there's a bigger, scarier adventure waiting for you in there", which is a clunker that even Matt Smith can't make work); I just think Rory deserved better than to be brusquely excluded from it.

Steven Cooper

If your preference is to react to Classic Who sooner, I'll suggest The City of Death, with the 4th Doctor.

TheBeatnik

I think An Adventure In Space and Time would be a great reaction. My thought would be to do it right around the time that you react to the 50th anniversary episode- I know that's a ways off, but I remember when they were first broadcast I felt it was appropriate to pair those two events. I'd watch An Unearthly Child (the very first episode) before An Adventure In Space and Time; although it is the first of four parts, it works fine as a stand-alone episode.

TheBeatnik

This made me realize that with New Who, the Doctor has a terrible success rate with companions. For the most part they're unable to travel in the TARDIS again for reasons not their own. Probably the most "unchanged" person that traveled with the Doctor is Capt. Jack and even then he became pseudo immortal and turned into a giant head.

LaRoy Murrell

I always forget how this ends. The episode itself is good but not one of my favourites but the Amy/Rory/Doctor goodbye tag is sad and beautiful.

LatePaul

Kensington? Knightsbridge?

LatePaul

Such a good episode :)

Lee

Just been reading Malcom Wolfs comment about which Classic Who to watch, and my suggestion is. An adventure in time and space, followed the first and last adventures of each incarnation and to finish off the 50th

Colin 3of5

I bet the Doctor had a word with The UNifed INtelligence network

Colin 3of5

So London and somewhere that begins with a 'K' makes me think Kensington..? But hey it's London so could be countless places. Think I was too young to properly get this episode (or at least the end) when it first aired, seems to get better with each re-watch

Oliver Sharp

He also has been known to sonic an ATM machine

Malcolm Wolf

Really glad you mentioned that. I feel the story of how Dr Who TV show came to be is as great as the story in the show itself. I think they both should watch the very first episode of classic Dr Who, then jump into An Adventure In Space And Time

Malcolm Wolf

Don't forget the Doctor likes to help people win the lottery. I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult for him to obtain some cash.

TheHimble

I haven't seen much Classic Who, so I don't know what to suggest, but it did make me think - you two should react to An Adventure In Space And Time about the creation of the Doctor Who TV show. I really liked Rita. She could easily be a companion. Apparently the Doctor thought so too. :) "Not all victories are about saving the universe." I had forgotten that line and I love it. Rory really is the conscience of the show. He's the good man. The most tragic thing about this episode is what the Doctor had to do to break Amy's faith in him was... be honest. The Doctor acquires money as needed. Remember the lottery ticket he gave Donna on her wedding day? It's easy for him to legally come into money when time travel is involved.

John

So I'm spending Thanksgiving at home this year due to the beer flu, but I'm still having a traditional Thanksgiving meal even if it is just me, and just as I'm sitting down with my turkey I get the notification your upload just hit. Happy to be spending Thanksgiving with you two Gallifrey Gals! Now, let's get Wibbley Wobbly stuffed! Pass the gravy, please...

John

Yeah that's probably just a cosmetic connection your brain mistakes for thematic. Lol
