Picard doing the Robert Stance just as the hail from the Sheliac is answered!

Love Paula doing the Janeway at the end.

The colonists' plight reminds me of what I felt when I had to give up my family's home, which had served us for the last 110 years. I constantly dream that I am back there, somehow, as it was. I have been offered a visit by the present owners, but I don't think I shall. Having lived there for over half-a-century and the history of place that I left behind, I was determined to stay put, but the house was in bad need of repair which I could never afford. I would either stay there or have the place fall around my ears. Anyway, I feel far too emotionally proprietorial and it is most likely best I stay away. It would not be my home, it is their own now and my emotions would feel improper about it.

Love when Paula just drops little things, like, "Tuesday."

Dan Williams

This is one of my favorite Data episodes, under his fight for his own Rights, because here he is having to force the loss of Rights to a people due to a remote govt decision. So many correlations to Climate Change in this episode, the arrogance that we couldn't possibly have an impact, or that we will always be ok. It reminds me of the chapter in Harry Potter Half-blood Prince, The Gaunts, thinking their family history puts them above the law...

Dan Williams

Turns out that 100 years ago in the last plague there were anti-maskers and science-deniers too! There's fliers from that period trying to convince them to 'do the right thing'. The US these days, I don't know its like part of the country is Taliban with their bigotry, racism and sexism. But you're right, it feels like each time around we're getting things better for all aspects of 1st world nations. The rest of the planet is coming along kicking and screaming too. I think shows like Star Trek really have helped move ideas forward.

Mr Kitty

Not just political. Gene Roddenberry wanted to address all kinds of issues, some political, some social, economic, etc. It's just that politics has so invaded every aspect of life these days it's hard to separate a "moral message" from a political one anymore. It's hard to comprehend today just how ground breaking the show was to have a bridge crew with an alien XO, Scottish engineer, Asian helmsman, Russian navigator, and a female African American communications officer. It's seems so ordinary today - and that's the point. We have come far in many ways. Not so much in others, but ST always gives us the lesson to strive to better ourselves.

John

So Grainger Hines suffered the David Prowse treatment. Shame they didn't hire James Earl Jones to play Gosheven,

Geordie Joe

Not sure if anyone has mentioned the massive prop (including costumes) sale that went on a few years ago for each of the series. There is a detailed YouTube video showing the entire project. Some fan may now own pieces you've expressed interest in.

Having rewatched this episode now with y'all, I have to say I underestimated it in my memory. I always liked it, it just sort of faded into the background given the peaks Season 3 hits a little later. But yeah, it's extremely relevant to today, and has some great character development for Data, as well as some top notch humor from Picard and the Engineering team. Also I love how the Gals try to keep things out of politics, because they are being respectful of others and that's not what the channel is about, but I also love that they do share their convictions freely when it is a core component of their response to the material. Because honestly, that's what Doctor Who, Star Trek, Avatar, and even Rick and Morty are ABOUT! They are shows about causing conversation, and questioning social norms and biases, and challenging peoples world view. That's one of the reasons they are so entertaining and evocative. If you aren't reacting in that visceral way to the material, if you aren't having that conversation, then I would say you'd be missing the point of these shows. Live your truth Gals! Speak truth to power. Keep on rockin.

It always baffles me how people can see Star Trek and say it's not political. Star Trek was alwayws a show with a message. Roddenberry was a humanist and wanted his ideals to show in Star Trek. That's why I fell love with Star Trek (in my case TOS on a rerun in 1992). I was five at that time and it helped me gro my moral compass and become a better person. I love Star Trek so much. But I guess there is only so much a TV show can do, if the surrounding isn't reassuring those values. *sigh*

Red Claw

Gosheven was played by Grainger Hines, but his voice was dubbed by an unknown actor. At his request, his credit was removed from the final episode. After filming was completed, it was decided that Hines' voice didn't have the presence the producers wanted in the episode, they thought it sounded too much like John Wayne. lol

Chrissonator

The Sheliac would seem to be relatives of the Vogons of Hitchhiker's Guide. If you freeze frame the legalese on the screens you'll see that someone had a blast writing it.

Bruce Bromley

I hope Picard nominated himself - he did have to read several thousand paragraphs of tedious legalese to defeat the enemy. He'd need stronger stuff than his 'tea, earl grey, hot' to plough through that lot! :D

Peter Evans

Agree with this whole thing. A solid episode, not an all star. Even the S3 "duds" are above average.

Josh G

That's a cool theory. Their lack of concern for other life forms is similar, as well. Maybe the Sheliak are a child race or offshoot of an older Vagran race? That would be a neat twist.

John

I would hope Picard nominated Data for a commendation for his actions in this episode.

Mark Chrisco

I wonder what happened to the original audio they needed to do that. Pretty bad.

Josh G

I can't pick a single favorite episode of this season. Maybe I could narrow it down to 2 or 3, but when you realize this episode is towards the bottom of the list for Season 3, you get an idea of how much awesome there is to come. And cranberry jodhpurs. Kat needs cranberry jodhpurs. And suspenders.

John

Also, I always imagined that this is the race that abandoned Armus (Skin of Evil). Similar voice and creature design. I don't know if it was recycling props or intentional, but it is creepy if you look at Armus and the Sheliak side by side. Yes, I know the wiki says Armus is a species known as Vagrans. But, back in 1989 watching this for the first time that was my instant reaction and it has stuck ever since.

Christian Rennie

In Measure of a Man they explored whether a machine could be alive. Now they're exploring what it means to that machine to be alive. Talking about how relevant the topics are even today, that's always been the core of Star Trek - to explore the human condition through various viewpoints. Those ideas are timeless. Original series episodes from the '60's are still just as relevant. If you want to talk about Black Lives Matter, I recommend the original series season 3 episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield." The specifics change, but it stays just as relevant.

John

I have a little bit of trivia for this episode. Mart McChesney is the actor playing the Sheliak representative. He also played Armus in the season one episode 'Skin of Evil'. From what I've seen, it looks like he was the guy in the suit for each role, but he wasn't the voice of Armus. But he may have done the voice for the Sheliak representative. (In case you don't remember, Armus is the malevolent being who killed Tasha Yar.)

Jeff Seely

This season get better and better! I am so happy I get to re-watch one of my favorite series you gals. I can hardly wait to see reactions to so many of these amazing ideas and deep questions. Especially The High Ground, The Hunted, The Bonding, sorry I guess i would just end up naming all of the episodes of this season. Thanks!

Christian Rennie

Data's tiny shuttle is named "Onizuka" after Ellison Onizuka, one of the Challenger astronauts.

This isn’t one of my favorite episodes of this season. It’s decent and a typical Star Trek episode but it doesn’t stand out in my opinion, probably because the rest of the season and series is so good so it just falls down the list. I’d say the first 10-12 episodes are decent and then the last 14 are top tier. The next episode is one of my favorites of the this early part of the season. It’s interesting hearing when Katrina talks about Data’s humanity and what aliens we might see again. I love when TNG visits an alien home world an it’s usually hidden in some remote mountain side, It’s never in an advanced city. Just a quick aside, the production crew used different techniques for different species transporters to differentiate them, so nice pick up.

Andrew Hogan

Sheliac CORPORATE indeed. Methinks Melinda Snodgrass had experienced corporate law and their lawyers at some time in her life. :) The ADR on Gosheven really stood out to me. And not in a good way. :/
