Shades of Gray, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S2Ep22

Today's episode is a little different. As we wrap up season 2 of our Trek reactions we wanted to discuss the episode that is "Shades of Gray"

This clips show of an episode that just shows us the past two seasons we already watching in a montage fashion deserved a slightly different format to our reaction and discussion. Also as a bonus at the end of this video we react to the Season 2 bloopers! The best way to end out the season is with some laughs!

See you all soon for Season 3! Engage! no, I mean Energize!

Lol you made a clip show about the clip show; bra-vo! Lol

for 2 weeks now I have missed TNG Reactions!!!!! when will this torture end?

Prime

The best moment of the episode is the nurse turning and smiling as he walks past Troi and Pulaski when Pulaski informs Picard that they’ve cured Riker

G0d_Ginrai

I may have missed it but when does s3 start up? Thanks

Peter

I just wanted to say thank you two for getting me back into TNG. I've been a huge Trek fan (I'll avoid the Trekkie/Trekker debate) since I was a kid, watching reruns of the original series, then TNG when it first aired. Many of these episodes I've not seen in over 10 years and it impresses me just how good this show was when I go back to it. I've been jumping around various seasons watching some of the better episodes lately and just watched one from an undisclosed season and was just thinking how it's going to have Kat in absolute tears only to leave her in shock by the time it's over. So many great episodes coming. The newer shows are all about action and fights and flashy effects, but a great story with compelling characters will win the day every single time.

John

That's a variation of the plot from "The Fly" Isn't it ?

Marina Sirtis has a GREAT story about Patrick Stewart. It was after the show ended and a few of the cast went to dinner with Patrick and his date. Also their favorite thing to do is to take the piss out of Patrick. So when she and his date went to the bathroom she commented on how mean they were to Patrick. Marina looked at her and essentially said, “You should be thanking us dearie. He used to have the biggest stick up his ass, and we’re the reason it’s gone.” She has told it at conventions I have been to. Just hilarious. I was at one a few years ago which was the 30th or something. And even though it was only Denise, Gates, Frakes, Dorn, and Marina, they were freaking crazy together. It was awesome at how they really are the best of friends.

Oh the transporter and all the philosophical questions it raises. What it does is, record the pattern and layout (or blueprint) of all the molecules in your body/mind, break them down to their individual parts, compress all that data into an electronic data stream which is then sent to the destination, and then using the aforementioned pattern, puts you back together again based off of that pattern. The transporter also stores that pattern for archival purposes until the next transport. In fact, I just read a Star Trek book where one of the characters has to do an emergency beam out that got messed with a bit while in an EV suit, and the pattern got a little messed up, resulting in his glove phasing into his hand. Yikes.

Expanding a little on what Paula said about season 3, I recommend that you even avoid looking up TNG on IMDb. The main IMDb page for it unfortunately has a spoiler for one of the things Paula was talking about. Going into this, I was expecting a fairly quick video with a few thoughts on Shades of Gray and then a reaction to season 2's blooper reel. What I got instead was an organized and fairly lengthy (in a good way) discussion on Shades of Gray and TNG in general. Paula, you did an excellent job with this. You organized your talking points like you were about to conduct a professional interview. You made what could have been a quick throwaway video into something that was really interesting to watch. Like Bruce Bromley mentioned in another comment, the big guy in the grey vest in the last clip in the blooper reel was none other than Gene Roddenberry: the creator of Star Trek and the husband of Majel Roddenberry (the actress who played Lwaxana Troi). I had forgotten about your connection to Armin Shimerman, Paula. It must have been so interesting to take a class with him. Believe it or not, I have a college connection to Star Trek too. Way back in the mid-2000s, I took classes with Harrison Solow as my instructor. She's the wife of Herb Solow, "Executive in Charge of Production" on the original Star Trek series. Without Herb Solow, Star Trek would never have gotten off the ground. I was privileged to have Harrison as one of my teachers (she's a very knowledgeable, kind, and compassionate person), and I had the opportunity to speak with her husband a few times. Herb Solow is pretty much the furthest thing you can imagine from a studio executive stereotype. There's a wisdom and a quiet strength to the man that I found quite remarkable.

I was a kid flipping through channels and caught the season 5 finale about 15 minutes in. I think seeing Levar from Reading Rainbow made me stop and watch. I was hooked by the end of the episode. They played all the reruns that summer from season one, so I saw the episodes all out of order...but that didn’t deter my enjoyment one bit. No one else in my family watched Star Trek, so I didn’t even know the show existed until that night.

You’re close, but what actually happened is they ran off a director in season 1 because they were being too rowdy on set. Rick Berman pulled them into a meeting and told them to straighten up, and Patrick (being the serious, Shakespearian actor) yelled at the rest of the cast, “We’re not here to have fun!” Denise Crosby (Tasha) argued back that they were stuck in the soundstage for 16 hours a day doing all this serious work, and they’d go insane if they didn’t have fun. The cast wore Patrick down over the rest of the season, and by season 2 he was one of the silliest ones. Although they never drove off another director, they never did let up on set and continued to be rowdy for the rest of the series. But they insist the only reason they were able to get away with it was because they were prepared once they stepped foot on set and didn’t have to spend time learning lines between takes, etc. Apparently the caliber of actor that Patrick Stewart was inspired them to never go on set unprepared for a scene.

I wish I would have had the chance to give you the link to the full blooper reel that’s 10 minutes. It exists on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/85285037. Tons more terrific stuff in that one. Thanks for at least doing the shortened one on YouTube, but they left the funniest bits out of that one. The bloopers for seasons 1-6 are on Vimeo, so if you react to them in the future, you can use those if you can’t get your hands on the Blu Rays. They’re all under the same Vimeo channel just numbered 1-6. “Shades of Grey” isn’t a great episode, but I’m a fan of the Riker/Troi relationship, so any moment between them in an episode redeems it for that reason alone. But yeah...a disappointing season ender. Hope the break isn’t too long, but I understand the burnout factor. I have to record/edit a weekly podcast and it’s a ton of work. I’ll add briefly that the TNG cast is well known for being extremely close to this day - they’re god parents to each other’s kids, were in each other’s weddings, and still hang out all the time (except for COVID). They’re also known for being the funniest and rowdiest Star Trek cast on set - even chasing off a director in the first season who couldn’t deal. The blooper reels just give you a glimpse. Their convention panels give you the best view of their bonds with each other, and they’ll have you laughing the whole time. Hope you guys stay safe in L.A. I lived there the past 7 years and just left back in May. Used to live in Calabasas and work on the West Side. Sorry about all the smoke you must be dealing with right now. I went through that with the Woolsey Fire a couple years ago...had to evacuate and the smoke smell lingered for weeks. Stay safe and catch ya for season 3!

trylikeafool

Glad you guys discussed this, and loved the blooper reaction. Btw, since you brought up skin of evil. is there anywhere to see the old blocked season 1 reactions? The links from YT are dead.

JXTN

The way this was edited was well done, and I certainly would not complain if you show certain scenes to directly comment on at the end of an reaction like you did here.

Malcolm Wolf

Data.exe has stopped responding. You get a feel for it in the blooper reel, but Jonathan Frakes said in an interview once that the cast are best friends to this day, and there'd never be a "tell-all" book because they all got along.

John

So you had a clip show in the middle of a review of a clip show and a blooper at the end of a reaction to bloopers. Yeah we’ve gone completely meta. Oh and Paula I see what you did😂😂😂😂

Steven morgan

As horrible as Shades of Gray was, it was really funny hearing your perspective from someone who knows the business. You're not wrong about the transporter, because how it works changes based on the needs of the plot. It's original concept is it scans you, kills you, then creates a new you at the transport location. More than just a clone, but all the way to the quantum level with memories, etc. There have been characters that refuse to use the transporter because of that. You also aren't supposed to be able to save a copy of someone due to the amount of data involved - it's essentially streaming (that's the transport buffer). But you've already seen times they've bypassed that for plot. On Riker's joking in the face of death, in the times in my life when I've had medical emergencies, I've tended to be joking about it as a defense mechanism. That's how I interpreted Riker's reactions, even though he said he was doing it for the crew. To me that came across as bravado for Troi and he was just using it as a coping mechanism.

John

This was a great discussion. I am glad you watched Season 1&2. I really don't have a problem with them, there are a lot of episodes I enjoy and watch over and over again. There is a big difference though with the later seasons, just being so good. When ST:TNG first aired, I didn't start watching until the 3rd season. I don't know why, it may be we didn't know about it, or our cable company didn't have it., but when I watched it I was hooked. I would speed through dinner to be the first done and then the tv was mine on Star Trek night. The first time seeing reruns of the first season my first reaction was "where's Riker's beard?" Everyone seems so stiff in the first season. I love your reactions and can't wait for the next season. Enjoy your break.

e com

I completely forgot about that moment between Riker and Troy. Seeing that his joviality is partially calculated to increase the crew's morale. I don't remember too many other scenes like that for him, and is a great character moment in an otherwise forgettable episode.

Ross Holditch

wondered how yall were going to handle it, great job!

GreyIrohNee

yeah probably the most useless episode ever

GreyIrohNee

https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4uwc4q. Here’s a link to the full season 2 gag reel. Can’t wait for season 3!

Does What It Do

I love that your reaction to a clip show was almost a clip show in itself! Very meta!

Robert Hill

Patience, not much of a point of doing solo relations with someone that has already seen the show. Especially, Paula, who doesn't enjoy the series as much as she does TNG. I'd rather wait for them to watch it together. I think Katrina will have a different take on the series. Much more fun to see them react together, hopefully back on the same room one day. 🙂

Bruce Bromley

Really hope that the two of you will one day get to react to the Season 2 Gag Reel in its entirety, as well as the Gag Reels for the other 6 Seasons as well. -Season One Gag Reel - 08:10 -Season Two Gag Reel - 10:30 -Season Three Gag Reel - 08:37 -Season Four Gag Reel - 03:34 -Season Five Gag Reel - 07:33 -Season Six Gag Reel - 05:21 -Season Seven Gag Reel - 04:53 So all in all, Katrina wouldn’t get her hour of bloopers, but I’m sure she’d be happy getting pretty close to it with almost 50mins of Bloopers across all Seasons.

G0d_Ginrai

The story (according to the cast) goes that during the filming of season 1, Sir Patrick was very much in "Super-Serious-Shakespearean-Actor" mode. He would get frustrated with the joking and breaking and playing around to the point where the rest of the cast eventually staged an intervention and pretty much said, "look dude, this isn't The Globe Theatre, you need to lighten up". One of my favorite parts of these bloopers is how clear it is that he took their advice to heart and I adore how affectionate they are with each other when they screw up.

Glen

You are totally right not to have skipped S1 and 2. BUT! At looooooooong last!!!! we are at the dawn of Season 3!!!! True GEMS in that season!!!! I can't wait! Love you gals!

Daniel Gauvreau

As you loved the bloopers maybe you should check out the Star Trek “intakes” on YouTube there great.

Tegan

You going through the blooper reel made me think of the movie "Postcards From The Edge" a really great movie from 1990, written by Carrie Fisher about her own experiences after she went into rehab. It's the movie that made me realize that Meryl Streep is as good an actress as everyone says she is.

Robert Williams

What do you think this is, Star Wars? They don't just go lopping peoples limbs off every 5 minutes. :)

Robert Williams

Apologies for comments in last episode, hopefully I didn’t spoil anything (thanks to John for the warning above my comment). I watched all the reactions on fan theory because the skin of evil one never showed up on YouTube and I’ll leave it at this, I was very happy with the outcome of the episode (sorry to anyone who liked the character). As an idea moving forward, would Paula be opposed (time permitting) to doing a solo reaction for DS9 episodes until Katrina catches up. Also, this is a bit late, but as far as another sci-fi show to watch, what about The Orville. It’s only two seasons and ten episodes each, so it’s not time consuming. I like the longer discussion about the episodes, it’s one of the best things about the show. Enjoy season 3.

Andrew Hogan

Great round-up Gals. It has me even more excited for what is yet to come. I forgave TNG for this clip show, thankfully their only one. Back than every show seemed to have them. Even though this was the fledgling Paramount Network's flagship show they still were stingy with the checkbook. I think by the middle of the next season Katrina you'll have completely forgotten this episode, like the rest of us. :-) I do wish that you were able to get the full S2 outtakes but alas that is only on the Blu-ray. Because of who they play, Michael Dorn and Brent Spiner seem to do complete 180's when they break up. I'd love to see you do more in depth discussions of the bigger episodes. I hope you two are having a good respite and will be back soon with more TNG. Thankfully I enjoy all the shows you have on your plates. :-) Katrina, FYI, the gentleman wearing the sweater vest singing at the end, is the creator of Star Trek also known as The Great Bird of the Galaxy, Gene Roddenberry.

Bruce Bromley

I can't wait for S3 yawl. I'm so geeeked!

Christine Ester

Paula's explanation of the transporter is as valid as most other explanations, hehe. Basically the transporter does what the plot needs it to do. ;-) Also there's many minutes more bloopers on the Bluray. CBS only released that snippet to whet people's appetites. :)

Jarrod Wild

Why didn't they just amputate Riker's leg before the microbe had a chance to spread? I'm sure they could've given him some kind of futuristic robotic leg as a replacement.

Geordie Joe

If they could have had more of a story there plus a decent B plot, it would have worked. But they did the minimum they felt was necessary.

Jarrod Wild

I personally think that the whole medical mystery wrapper would have been a cool episode on its own.
