Comments

I'm not a fan of covering over the video so much. A tiny bit to the sides was ok, but the wheel in the center bottom is too much.

Mr Kitty

I always watch the opening credits, even for Enterprise :)

Zach Coty

I ALWAYS watch the opening credits! The music is great for most Star Trek Series.

Britton Robbins

I found it odd that the dialogue indicated that the shuttle was only travelling at sublight speed. The type of shuttle used in the exterior shots had glowing nacelles which would suggest warp capability.

Raja

Side note, however, not sure if this has already been asked, so sorry if it has, but is it possible to sync the onscreen video with the person who has never seen it? I.e. Katrina for Trek and Paula for Who? It was a little weird having Katrina react before the moment had happened. If not, all good, it’s not a biggie

Red Hunter

Just catching up now... and I have to say.... I watch the entire intro section every time and either dance along with y’all or do the monologue along with it

Red Hunter

I'm late to this, but for their question, I for one never skip the intro. Random conversations + dancing to the theme song is always a bonus for me.

Travis Starnes

So would you all say Picard is some kind of curmudgeon? I think he behaved himself very well in this episode. Just what i would want from a superior officer.

RobAnywhomst

I too do the intro dance. Every time. On a side note: poor Wesley! Six hours with a grumpy Picard just before his exams?

RobAnywhomst

I can assure you there are actually quite a few times I have sided with Pulaski and given her the credit she deserves! But I also can't hide the fact that it's my honest reaction that I'm upset it's not Doctor Crusher. My heart was set on her and I just loved her so much! - Kat

Time Lord

The Pakleds are a prime example of what happens when a civilization is exposed to technologies they are not sufficiently advanced or culturally sophisticated enough to madyer.

Mark Chrisco

I am a sometimes skipper. This time I did not.

Jonny Moonsliver

My one and only complaint is the reactions aren't often enough! Not to be demanding. I liked TNG back when I was a teenager and watched all the episodes when they were released but I wasn't a huge fan or anything. These days I really miss thoughtful optimistic sci-fi (I'm looking at you Star Trek: Picard ugh) and it's a pleasure to experience it with these charming and entertaining gals.

DWM

"Acting Captain's Log: Lt. Cmdr. William Riker. Captain Picard had to make a visit to Starbase Thingymabob and absolutely nothing else happened. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. And anyone who says otherwise is a dirty liar."

Peter Evans

Never skipped. Not DAMN once :)

PIG

Status is, "I TOLD YOU SO!!" Love it!!!

Richard Saldana

One does not simply skip over the TNG intro

Jonathan Emery

I'd never skip the TNG intro. Never get tired of listening to that theme tune.

Geordie Joe

She becomes a captain in one of the Star Trek novels.

Geordie Joe

You would think there would be regulations around rendering aid to non-Federation ships. A security escort would seem like a no-brainer.

John

Why would I skip the intro? Either I want all your reactions.

Red Claw

Farewell ENS Sonya Gomez, we hardly knew ye.

David Brown

When I watch the episode on my own, I skip the intro. When I watch your reaction (usually right after) I do not skip!

ALFONSO SMITH III

I won't lie that fact that Katrina won't even give the doctor any credit. Even though she is literally almost ALWAYS right and is very honest with them. Is irritating and annoying.

Scott Archibald

we promise to stay on top of it and not keep you in suspense for too long! Mostly because I can't wait to get to my favorite season ;) -Paula

Time Lord

<3 Also, yeah, I knew she would be so bummed that it wasn't Crusher! -Paula

Time Lord

That’s a good summary of TNG. I like both shows, but since TNG was what made me a Trekkie, it’s always been at the top for me personally. The characters feel more like family to me, and I think it’s the perfect embodiment of what Gene Roddenberry wanted Star Trek to be. I like DS9 for completely different reasons, and I think they’re both good shows.

trylikeafool

oh, interesting! Thanks for that tidbit of information! -Paula

Time Lord

Yesss I really love the later episode you're talking about -Paula

Time Lord

wooo dancing! -Paula

Time Lord

<3 -Paula

Time Lord

Totally watch the theme dancing!

Jason Faria

P.S. - I don’t skip the intro, because sometimes you make interesting comments during it :)

trylikeafool

Definitely a cringe episode, except for the shuttle scenes between Wesley and Picard. I love the character moments they both have, more backstory about Picard, and the relationship building. I felt so bad for Katrina when she realized it wasn’t Crusher. I want to say more about that, but I can’t. Just want to say that Tuesday nights have become one of my favorite parts of the week as I relax after dinner and watch you two react to TNG. I can’t wait for season 3 for so many reasons, and I wish you weren’t gonna make us wait until winter for it! What am I going to do on Tuesday nights until then? But I know breaks are needed sometimes. Please don’t keep us waiting too long.

trylikeafool

Just wanted to say thanks. I subscribed for the Doctor Who reactions, but the TNG reactions have reignited my love for a show that I adored back in the 80's/90's but came to regard as having been outshone by the more complex Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Looking at it again now, through the fresh eyes of these videos, I am reminded of just how unique, positive, thoughtful and mature TNG could be. I had really come to unfairly underestimate it in the intervening years. Thank you for taking me back. It's like I'm watching the show for the first time, all over again.

JimmyPea

A Lycia Naff episode!!!! Budum-tss.

Eric

The Prime Directive reminds me of Captain Barbossa from Pirates of the Caribbean "It's more what you'd call guidelines than actual rules". Also, love Worf being right in this episode...he's often overreacting but not this time.

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

The 2 of you will be happy to know I want you boogie all the way through!😁😁😁

Amy Chlebus

Ok watched it all now, 😂 I used to have a friend who looked like those aliens, he had the eyebrows down pat, but yeah this is a bit of a naff episode. Let’s face it the B plot is better than the a plot

Steven morgan

O.k this is true, every time you dance I completely love it and think I’m going to tell them how much I love their dancing , o.k facial expressions more but still. . I never do because I forget, I was just thinking this now when you asked the question so yes. Definitely yes . Love watching the dancing. Now time to get back to the episode

Steven morgan

I don't skip anything. The look in your face when you were hoping it would be Dr. Crusher that saved him, was heartbreaking. I felt so bad, see your anticipation. I knew you would be disappointed. Thank you so much for reacting to ST:TNG. This is my bright spot to a busy hectic day. This has been my favorite show since I was a kid. It is so great to watch it again with fresh eyes on it. There have been several episodes that I skip when I binge so it's nice to revisit them. You have given me some more respect for these episodes and a fresher viewpoint.

Another thing is, under modern maritime law, if you receive a distress call from a ship at sea you must render whatever assistance you are possible of providing. "A master of a ship at sea, which is in a position to be able to provide assistance on receiving a signal from any source that persons are in distress at sea, is bound to proceed with all speed to their assistance." So, if they follow similar laws, they would be required to give any aid possible when they receive a distress call. Look up the investigations that they had on Stanley Lord after the Titanic sank.

Robert Williams

This sets up a great episode (one of my favorites) down the road. The scenes with Picard and Wes are great and the true heart of the episode, the rest is filler. Decent, but a step down from the previous episode. I'll never skip the credits, unless you get to Enterprise. That song is awful, I cringe every time I hear it.

Jared Abrahamson

Oh, I forgot to mention that I never skip the intro. I never know what the two of you might be talking about during that part and I don't want to miss it.

Jeff Seely

Yeah, people forget you aren't allowed to warp through a solar system. Not their fault, it's so inconsistent as to not even be a thing in the show. I always apply the Babylon 5 rule. When JMS was asked how fast the ships go, he would answer, "The speed of plot."

Anthony Wickizer

I really like this episode... except for the terrible dialogue on the Pakled story. B-Plot: Picard and Wesley together is gold here. Most of it is obvious stuff, but I love how Picard's image as a Captain is his biggest flaw. It tailors so perfectly into the follow up series. So good. Plus after getting stabbed in the heart.. he laughed. HE LAUGHED!!!! So good!!! Main Plot: I actually love the premise. The fact Starfleet is willing to help pretty much anyone is an awesome theme. But a few small changes would have kept it from being straight up annoying. Have Riker listen to Worf and at least send a security escort along as a precaution. They can kill the red shirt and capture Geordi and we don't think Riker is a complete idiot here. Plus the dialogue is just bad. Data's line abou Troi being an empath and Riker's "Stop that!" or whatever he yells. Ugh. And Paula is dead on. The Prime Directive is really just a basic tool for the writers to weald in interesting circumstances. Loosely, it only applies to pre warp civilizations. In the drug addiction story, remember they were going to fix their ship. so that is at least a bit consistent. haha And yes. I watch the Intro Dance!!!!!!! How could I not!

Anthony Wickizer

I am LIVING for Katrina's shade of Pulaski!! :)

Firefly24601

We absolutely, 100% watch the dancing. :)

Craig O'Flaherty

I sometimes skip, and sometimes don't. It depends on what I'm doing, and what the episode is. I mean, for some of the bad episodes in season 1, I skipped the intro or the outro because the episode sucks. Other times, like if I have only like 45 minutes before I need to do something, I'll skip the intro just to make sure I can finish the episode. And yeah, it would be nice if they listened to Worf (or Tasha) more, and if they listened to Diana more. But the Federation is not a military power. I believe at this point in time, they don't even have a single warship in all of Starfleet. They have exploration vessels, science vessels, medical, etc...But no ships which are designed specifically for combat.

Talmet

As far as I am aware the Prime Directive prohibits interference with pre-warp civilizations and is supposed to stop them from interfering with the laws and customs with other warp capable civilizations but the later I find is more flexible than the former but for the most part I would agree its not enforced every time consistently but in this case a seemingly humanitarian assistance mission to people who seem to be advanced enough technologically makes sense that it does not break the prime directive.

Rylee

I'm no skipper! I'm a TNG Theme Song Dance Party member from Day 1!!

Firefly24601

This episode was supposed to feature the “Captain’s Yacht” to take Wesley and Picard to the Starbase. The budget couldn’t fit building a new set, so they used a shuttlecraft was instead. According to Patrick Stewart, the yacht’s name is “Calypso” (after Jacques Cousteau’s ship).

Kelley Leary

I watched that same video this morning.

Bruce Bromley

The guy that does the "Back Trek" videos on youtube did a video on continuity issues that don't make sense in episodes. He did this episode, and figured out that given Wesley's comment that they weren't traveling at warp speed, that if they were going to the starbase at impulse, the Enterprise would have made the trip to the starbase at its cruising speed of Warp 6 in 33 seconds, and that's figuring that the shuttle is running at just under the speed of light. And, yeah, I watch the opening credits

Robert Williams

The actress that played Sonja Gomez in TNG also played the 3-boobed prostitute in Total Recall. Personally, I prefer her as Ensign Gomez

Robert Williams

Have been watching your episodes since early Season 1. (I have recapped on what I missed). Have been enjoying watching a newb enjoy something I know very well. It almost allows for me to approach the episode as if I'm watching it again for the first time through Katrina. Watching Katrina react to Tashas death made me feel emotions from the episode I hadn't felt in a long time. Also watching someone emotionally react to a situation that I know the outcome of brought new emotions. Katrinas almost denial to accept that Tasha was dead was heart wrenching. As for my opinion on this episode 'Samaritan Snare', it would have taken the Enterprise 6 hours to drop them off just as it did the shuttle. There is Star Trek canon or precedent for not being able to warp within a star system however it is often overlooked in order for the ships speed to keep up with the plot. I think that the Picard story was written as the B plot and they needed a situation to increase tension when the Enterprise needed to go to his aid. I always felt like the Pakled story conclusion was poorly written as if they hadn't had time to devise a better way to beat them. It reminded me a little of the TOS episode The Corbomite Maneuver but less well executed. We therefore ended up with an episode where the B plot was far more interesting than the A plot. As for the Pakleds themselves, I recollect hearing that they were meant to be a species that came across as not very intelligent but were in fact meant to be a species whose level of communication was basic compared to English (at least when translated) and mislead people to believe the Pakleds were stupid. I think this would have been better conceptually rather than the Pakleds being the cave men with ships and appearing stupid on almost an insulting sterotype level. I always watch the intros as you sometimes talk about the episode during it and wouldn't want to miss that. However, wouldn't want to miss the dancing either.

Peter

I was worried about the new border it didn’t distract at all. Also never skip the intro dance.

SplinterTME

Don't skip anything.

TheHimble

Please keep watching Trek! I look forward to watching and I'd pay for any trek series you guys go with! Thanks for doing it!

Weapon26

The B-plot saved this episode, because the A-plot was terrible in my opinion. The stupid things that had to happen in order for it to work were too much for me. Anyway, it was cool that we got a little Picard backstory in this one. Seeing someone like him open up to Wesley about his past was nice.

Jeff Seely

I never skip intros on anything Trek, except on Enterprise sadly, when I limit listening to the intro song for a handful of times per season. For obvious reasons...

Emanuel

This is an interesting episode but really only because we get the Picard backstory, its weird in that I often feel like the Picard stuff is the A plot and the Enterprise is the B plot but naturally they want to keep the plot with the Enterprise as the A plot and the indecision I think is notable in that the pacing is pretty weird and the story very choppy with it bouncing between the plots every like 2minutes constantly. Overall an ok episode with some good moments and some great backstory. On the bright side you've had some pretty stressful last couple of Episodes and now its time for something a bit more fun :)

Deagor

I've been catching the episodes on BBC America now. They are on Season Three.

Bruce Bromley

No skipping. Theme song dancing all the way.

Eric

First, thanks for using the static border and not the animated one. For me, that was the big distraction last time. :-) You would think after being stuck in the shuttle with Q for six hours last time, he wouldn't want to do that again with Wesley. You were absolutely right Katrina. It would have taken less then a minute for the Enterprise to drop them off. Maybe it was good that Riker turned down his own command. He takes control and everything goes south....I bet I know who Kat wanted to show up to save Picard. The episode would have been so much better if Dr. Crusher did show up at the end. :-)

Bruce Bromley

Samaritans were indeed from Samaria in biblical times. The story of the "Good Samaritan" was about a charitable person from Samaria. It would have been really cool if Dr. Crusher had been the one to save him, but they wouldn't have had to call the Enterprise if that was the case. The Prime Directive in this case would allow them to assist with repairing their existing tech because they were already a space-faring race, but not give them more advanced tech. About them always ignoring Worf (and Tasha), TNG treats Security as use of military/police force and it's a last resort. They always make the assumption there is a peaceful solution. A lot of that was based on Gene Roddenberry's view of the future portrayed in Trek, where they've cured disease, poverty, bigotry, avarice, etc. and recognize force is sometimes a necessary evil. That explains Riker's reaction to Worf, but it was poor writing when he didn't immediately take Troi seriously given how well he knows and trusts her. Paula, what season of DS9 are you on? I've been rewatching some of that lately as well. Some really good episodes.

John
