Everyone wants to be able to fly, so airbending is the obvious answer, but then you might think about more long term, practical, material possibilities and reaalize earthbending can do the most good for the most people. Firebending, who needs it in a world where we have gasoline, and waterbending gets entirely dismissed even with the possibility of healing powers; it's just too niche for a land-based species. The thing a first time viewer may never guess, though, is that spiritbending is a thing. A fifth element, outside of the universal cycle, and what's most intriguing, people can "learn" it. Mainly monks who meditate for 40 years to attain spiritual enlightenment, but still, it shows bending isn't something you're just born with. Indeed, there's hints throughout the show that people long ago (VERY long ago, when you consider there's been 1000 avatars and they often live 2-300 years) initially learned bending from animals. It's entirely possible, given what the show tells us, you could learn several ways of bending, as long as you work at it and seek enlightenment and don't get locked into one way of thinking and one way of doing things as a form of bending tends to encourage. That being said, I probably have the temperament for most easily using airbending, though I'd most like to know earthbending. And yes, Sokka is good. One boy with a seal bone club standing against a big damn steam ship with a sharp pointy steel hull filled with trained soldiers and firebenders, because he is the only warrior the village has left? That could be a 4 hour Ridley Scott movie by itself.

I don't like water,(I almost drowned once) fire scares me and earth is ... dirty. So I guess I'd want to bend air.

finally watching your reaction to ep 2! bit late but shh. think you would love to bend fire, especially the tragic disasters that face your state, but water bending would be just as helpful

Every time I heard Katrina say Zuko, I kept picturing him in my head as Danny Zuko with a Travolta haircut. I like how my brain works sometimes. :)

Craig O'Flaherty

I instantly thought "Water bender" when Paula asked. And I think Katrina has it right on! World domination aside, I totally see her as a Fire bender.

The two best qualities of this show are its character development and world building. Kat, you are not gonna be disappointed.

O.k so this might be a u.k thing. But over here saying bender means something else and hearing you say what type of bender am I had me in stitches. But loved this episode. This show is very interesting. Loving the characters. I think sokaiya might become my favourite

Steven morgan

"getting emotionally attached" oh you will be, you will be

Rylee

Yep, I definitely stand by what I said before: Sokka is my favorite. He's shaping up to be such a good character.

Jeff Seely

First of all, I know I'm not following the rules here, I'm going by what you need to bend 😁 Katrina - Cat meow bender. Paula - Time bender. Just to be able to start streams and stuff on time 😄

First of all, y'all got a Full Geronimo from me for this show and Get Warped! I'm so pumped! Second, I'm glad your discussion included the point about Sokka's role in defending the village. His role in these two episodes is meant to add to a thematic atmosphere prevalent throughout the show, and mirror's Aang aangst about being the Aavatar (see what I did there?). But, the first time I realized the tragedy of Sokka's role in defending the village one of my many rewatches of the series, I was also moved to tears. Sokka is literally the only thing standing between his family and death. He is the village's only defense. His hard-ass approach with the kids and their potty-breaks is played for humor, but as far as he knows, if he cannot train these children to defend themselves and the village, they will die. And then, of course, the ease with which Zuko defeats Sokka only serves to highlight that the villagers have no real defense. At age 15, Sokka is responsible for the lives of the women and children of his tribe, including his family.
