And the reason they made Susan his granddaughter was because at the time the show started, they thought it'd look creepy to have some 'old' guy traveling in the TARDIS with a young woman. :)

I love how Paula just bailed on the closing. Charming as heck. That right there is why I became a regular listener to Death by Monsters as well.

The closest thing you'd get to "falling in love" in the classic series was the serious chemistry between The Fourth Doctor and The Second Romana (also a Time Lord/Lady). That's probably more to do with the real life romance between the two actors.

Great idea to react to these! I hope you'll do Series 6 minisodes too at some point in the future, esp. Night and the Doctor minisodes are some of my favourite 11th Doctor content ever (and include some great background explanations)

LOVE that you did these! I was hoping you would. And no. He didn't fall in love with any other Companions.

He didn’t actually have feelings for any of the companions.... however Tom Baker was married to Lala ward who played romana and their chemistry on set made the two of them look like lovers. Lots of arm I. Arm and flirting

I have hope by the time you take your little respite and start season three of TNG and six of DW, you'll be back on the same couch. I've been thankful you keeped the reactions going through this craziness.

I always hated that when I started the Tom Baker years of DW, the PBS station would only air them at ungodly hours after midnight.

Love the mini-reactions. Looking forward to more of them.
Do you guys have a schedule planned yet for when you'll watch the Christmas special and start Series 6? I totally understand wanting to take a break. Just wondering. I'm so excited for the Series 6 storyline, but I'm excited for them all. Matt Smith just gets better each series, IMO.

As I understand it, Doctor Who wasn't heavily marketed in the US until the Matt Smith era. I guess the David Tennant era had proven what a huge hit the show could be in the UK, and the soft reboot of the Matt Smith era would have presented a perfect jumping-on point for American viewers. So that's why -- early on in Matt Smith's run -- you had that awkward segment at the beginning with Amy explaining her "imaginary friend" to American audiences.
Prior to the Matt Smith era, it seems like Doctor Who was kind of a cult favorite among some people in the US but never super-popular. Way back in the day, pre-Eccleston Doctor Who was broadcast in the US on PBS (along with other niche British favorites like Red Dwarf and Blackadder).

Well this was a pleasant surprise! I wasn't expecting Dr. Who content for a while so this brightened my day. Thank you!!

The Doctor has had many different types of companions in the past. Not only just women from earth, but also men. He's also had a Time Lady from Gallifray with him, an robotic dog, an android, a few aliens, his granddaughter.

The most love between Doctor and companion in classic Who was with Romana. Mostly in City of Death where the two of them are running around Paris. It's probably just a reflection of Tom Baker and Lalla Ward's relationship at the time.

When do you guys plan to do A Christmas Carol? Are you going to release it as the final season 5 episode or the first season 6 episode

It’s definitely something I want to see them react to as well but they’re technically Series 6 shorts and they set up a small arc of sorts that is resolved in the Series 6 shorts collectively known as ‘Night and the Doctor’.

Talking about New Who can be a bit spoilery I suppose, since they're only about halfway through it, but in Classic Who, I'd say that Sarah Jane could have been up there.
Unfortunately, though, there was some sort of unspoken rule in 70's sci-fi where you weren't allowed to portray "girly" things like love and emotion, so you kind of have to guess at it. At least that's what it seems like to me, because 60's Who had plenty of it, including a whole storyline about the Doctor's granddaughter falling in love, and one side plot in a serial where the Doctor was briefly engaged and showed affection for the lady.
Then the 70's came along and it all changed. Yes, they had a story where Leela stayed on Gallifrey to marry a member of the Chancellery Guard, but it was portrayed in a very dry way with no emotion where you couldn't tell they were falling in love, and could barely credit it even when she announced she was staying.
Thank goodness for Big Finish to fix these problems. 😉 If you listen to the Gallifrey spinoff series, you really get a feel for Leela's love for Andred. So many problems are fixed with a good dash of Big Finish! 😁

I always figured Leela was more of a favorite student than anything, and Sarah Jane was the one that truly had his heart.

The 4th Doctor was fairly close with Leela, in a platonic sense, but I think the closest he came to a romantic relationship would be with Romana. Which makes sense, as Tom Baker and Lalla Ward were involved during her time on the show and were married from 1980-1982.

The 2011 comic relief had a 2 part doctor who short with Amy and Rory. They should react to that.

I genuinely forgot about these mini episodes! so good to see them. I can't think of any other companions he's had "feelings" for. maybe the 8th doctor in the movie? the first time he kissed a companion (or anyone) he was very close with Sarah Jane but nothing more than platonic

So, who would win in an argument between Donna and Amy? Or would they just team up on the doctor?😂

The closest thing to Rose might have been Leela, from the 4th doctor. He was hard hit when she left. But there was no romantic element.
