I empathize with Will Riker. Only with me, it was my mother who hated cooking and I ended up taking it all over. When we had cookery classes at high school, I had a head start all except that I learnt on my grandmother's kitchen range and had no idea how an electric cooker worked. Hmph.

Wow, just saw this comment. I remember HFS before it became El Zol. No idea what it is now. "Eddie Vedder's pants..."

Back in the 90s, one of our local radio stations took sound bites from Picard's interrogation of Other Picard ("Don't look away! Look at me!", "He can't answer you, Captain, he doesn't understand!", etc.) and turned it into a "Next time on Star Trek The Next Generation: Picard takes LSD and tries to talk to a cat!" bit between songs (the late, lamented WHFS, for those of you who were in the Baltimore/DC area in 1993ish.) Until today, I didn't know what episode they had taken the lines from.

hm yeah that's a great question... will our reactions to the show be distracting to you if you're watching it for the first time? Or will they enhance the viewing? I'm glad you'll be checking them out with us, though!! -Paula

Still very much enjoying seeing how both of you react to these episodes some of which I haven't seen for several years . Seeing how you react to them and some of the comments and theories both of you make brings something new to the show for me. I do enjoy some of the theories Katrina thinks about/mentions and some of the trivia that Paula is able to provide. I'm a big Trek fan but some of the stuff Paula mentions is new to me.

I very much like this episode, I don't mind that not everything is wrapped up nice and tidy and you have to think about and consider what actually happened. It's the first time we see the Enterprise destroyed (and maybe not the last time we'll see that).
I also noticed something in this episode which becomes way more common in TNG scripts in tuture episodes. That is one character doesn't respond to a question from another character and instead tells them that they need to see it for themselves. In this case Riker doesn't respond to Picard's question asking why he needs to go to the shuttle bay instead responding that he needs to see it for himself.

Katrina is watching it off Netflix. There's nothing to be done to avoid the episode title, not to mention it's on the screen after the cold open.

I enjoy the unresolved mystery of this episode. Probably my favorite Picard/Riker scene of the series is their pow-wow in the ready room.

I mean, of course it's got Star Trek vibes. It's Star Trek! But seeing as how I started with Doctor Who my mind relates and sees correlations to Doctor Who! The 3rd Doctor had so many moments of.. "Reverse the polarity!" and that's what it kind of felt like to me π - Kat

Just want to make a correction that the egg Riker made was an βOwanβ egg he picked up at their last stop, so it was an alien egg which apparently tasted disgusting. Looking forward to next weekβs. Itβs one of my favorites of the season because it focuses on my favorite character.

Phase and polarity are not equivalent and this is just as much Star Trek vibe as it is Dr. Who....

Going forward, I believe there are good reasons not to tell either noob the title of the episode. There are too many cases where it gives too much away.

Yet another season 2 episode I donβt remember. Loved it though as I love time travel episodes because they get your mind thinking. I think itβs clever that they have t explained it all as that means you can come up with your own theories. Looking forward to Thursday now, and looking forward to your animation shows shortly. Although Iβm not sure as I havenβt watched either show, if I should watch it new with you or watch the episode first before watching your reactions.

I guess Doc was wrong. Picard didn't pass out when he saw himself, nor did it cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum and destroy the entire universe!Β Granted, that's a worst-case scenario. The destruction might in fact be very localized, limited to merely our own galaxy. Great Scott!

I absolutely believe Crusher would have done everything in her power to keep them separated from each other. Or at the very least stepping in when Picard started to cross a line!! I didn't even think to think of Crusher in that situation. She definitely would have handled it better.. but that may be my bias talking π -Kat

Despite the fact that the explanation is totally fudged, this is one of my favourite stories from season two. It's an old sci-fi trope to have someone from the future show up and have other characters (in the present) prevent them from changing the timeline - but to have someone from only hours in the future show up,and have other characters (in the present)actively trying to change the timeline into something different...is an intriguing variation on the formula. Added to that, two Patrick Stewarts in the same episode - and I can forgive it for not bothering with a proper explanation. Totally understand why some would find it disappointing, though. I think I'm just a softie when it comes to time-paradox stories :)

In defence of Worf. In the opening scene when Worf comments about women in cooking in human households he said "shared"

Paula, sorry your back was killing you while recording. You were bouncing all over the couch trying to get comfy. Katerina, I had that same thought right before you did that the vortex was right out of the DW opening. I just knew you were going to him the theme when they went though it. π. Kat, how do you think Crusher would have handled the situation? I honestly think she would have kept the two Picards apart. Your thoughts?

This is an episode I struggle to like. The character stuff is quite interesting at times, but the plot is razor thin. It's as if the writer didn't know what to do with this seemingly malevolent force if it wasn't Q. So just like Picard, we're left with mostly questions by the end. It's not a bad episode, and I can see how somebody else could really like it. I guess it just didn't hit me the right way.

There was some argument that the next time Q showed up, that he'd drop a line pretty much taking credit for the time vortex.

Riker's "omlet" is an insult to eggs everywhere.
PIcard's interacting with his own timeline. He better be careful or he could blow a hole in the universe.
I never thought of the anomaly as the time vortex, but now I can't unsee it. This episode was before New Who came out. I wonder if it was influenced by Classic Who? Trek does play with time travel occasionally. The "Warp 10 around the sun" thing Riker mentioned was a reference to an Original Series episode. (and at least 1 movie)
