Nothing is wrong with being emotional. Empaths do tend to get pulled into the moment easily, emotions to us is like being in a candy store. Being emotional is considered weak, especially in men, but its a powerful strength too. Wil Wheaton was recently talking on FB about how he's happy to have been a good role model to young viewers. Even discussion of LGBT, where Wesley was their first self awareness, he's happy he helped people realize who they are. I find this episode very deep. Good reactions from both of you!

Mr Kitty

The think the real issue in this story is how Wesley is able to get into a bar at 16 :)

Stuart McConnell

I love how emotional you two get watching episodes. It makes me re-examine the episodes and how I feel about them, and see them in a new light.

Travis Starnes

The rubber-and-fur alien creature is endearingly 'original series';but I think the optical effects for the holodeck in this story still look good.

Ian Smith

I can't complain too much about the cheesy '80's special effects and monsters. Modern Doctor Who still has Zygons which are just big red rubber suits a good 20 years later.

John

Katrina, viewed against the context of the social isolation this pandemic-and-quarantine forces upon us, seeing an honest expression of human emotion in response to an affecting story is ... well, it's a gift. Thank you for that. Gals, never apologize for having generous hearts.

Hullo! Time for another overly long comment! Well for me I'm afraid this isn't a great one. It has me cringing at many a point with the tell-don't-show clumsy writing, but hey, it's kind of sweet and touching at points and I'll take that over grim-dark modern sci-fi foolishness. As a Brit I also find it endearing how a big budget show like STNG can have furry creatures that classic Doctor Who would be slightly embarrassed by. (It's kind of a shame they went with the costumes, it would have been far more effective to show Anya's dangerous power in a more subtle form. It's still baffling to me how Babylon 5, with less than half the budget, in the main consistently and proudly churned out superior alien make-up and designs. ) Fortunately there's a fair few cute little scenes to make this a decent episode. Riker and Guinan is a highlight - boy I wish that scene just kept going. (Guinan saying, "Shut up kid!" is gold.) Worf is just wonderful as ever. ("Go to her door. Beg like a human.") And I've always kinda liked Wesley, he's an engaging kid trying to make sense of the world, despite his crazy intelligence. There are a couple of Wesley episodes coming up in latter seasons that are legitimately among my favourite episodes of the show. And despite my big issues with the episode, the Guinan and Wesley scene at the end really makes up for a lot. (And most of all for me in the episode's favour there's the opportunity for me to jump up and down excitedly as for the first time I spot Madchen Amick's brief role as the young woman alter-ego of Anya. I loved Madchen Amick in Twin Peaks, I had a big crush on her when I watched that show. She came back two years ago in Twin Peaks The Return. She was still awesome.) Further random thoughts: I like how engineering - a place that might require quick access to dangerously malfunctioning units that might lead to a warp-core breach - has the slowest elevator in the galaxy. Is there a gift shop on the Enterprise? With all the shuttling about of alien ambassadors and such, you'd think there'd be one. Where's our cuddly Picard Teddy Bear, huh? Guest quarters have to put up with watching movies on a 4x3 aspect ratio. That kinda sucks. Also how irritating would Picard checking in every five minutes for seemingly no reason except to vaguely enquire as to your comfort be? Listen man, I'm watching Due South and I'm five minutes from the end, could you like just go away unless there's an imminent warp core breach, or something? Say what you will, Paddi Edwards as Anya would have made a hell of a Dolores Umbridge if Imelda Staunton hadn't been available. I admire an actress who can get us legit booing and hissing in so few a number of lines. Anya: "I certainly hope nothing potentially dangerous befalls my charge, for example. I imagine that would make me murderously violent." Wesley: "So how about a trip on the holodeck, huh?" (I do quite like the way she played her goodbye as well.) So, we're half way through the awkward but slowly improving Season Two. I find this episode, like half of Season Two, frustrating to watch. There are moments here but everything seems to me just so timid and clunky and underwritten. They're clearly labouring under the weight of the original series legacy and Roddenberry's interference and just haven't figured out how to be their own thing yet. Compared to Season Two of Babylon 5 which quickly becomes somewhat dazzling in its scope and ambition, it's kind of frustrating. (Although to be fair Babylon 5 has a completely different goal in mind as a planned out five year novel for television.) But STNG's strength is still in play - great characters you want to spend time with. The rest of the season is a mixed bag - some bad some good and one genuinely great one in the mix. Come Season Three we'll find a show that's both genuinely thrilling and at times moving. Anyway, fun again to be going on the journey with you. I love that you're enjoying this Katrina and this show is now becoming a Tuesday highlight for me! Dig your t-shirt too, Paula! And cool mug? Must take a look. :)

The actress playing Salia was about 27 when this was filmed, while Wil Wheaton was 17. Sure he didn't mind that kiss haha. Loved how Picard just stomped his authority on the situation and the nanny when she was in a clutch with Worf. While it was obvious she could easily wipe out everybody in the room, he correctly assessed that even though she went way overboard with the risk assessment, she wouldn't really let it get out of hand over that sillyness and therefor could be reasoned with. And simply assigning her to her quarters with authority. He is such a bad ass when needed.

Had to laugh at kats comments at beginning mocking the older generation thinking they know better than the younger generation, before the comments at the end which was the perspective of an older generation giving advice to the younger generation with experience, the irony was too delicious for me. Brilliant episode. You girls are so genuine and I was not a fan of this episode but you sold it too me

Another one I don't remember ever watching. Also wasn't expecting Madchen Amick to show up! Also it looked like Anya was played by the same actress that portrayed Vedek Winn from DS9, but nope. And don't ever worry about showing your true emotions. That's why we subscribe, to see people react. :)

Firefly24601

DS9 is my absolute favorite of all Trek. The story telling device is closer to a Buffy style of show. Star Trek on a Hellmouth that drives the story. Next Gen is masterful in what pure Trek is however DS9 had the fortune of playing in the sandbox that they built.

Jason Faria

Katrina I so love that you look over the early special effects and get into the story line , the meat of this show. As well it should be.

Christine Ester

Not one my top 10 episodes, but a good episode nonetheless. :) I hate that they outsourced season 2 for the remastering, because the effects suffered majorly by it, because the VFX supervisor for season 2 was one of the original VFX people and he wanted the show to look like the original only in HD... so it suffered by it a lot.

Chrissonator

There's nothing quite like a first love. You never love someone quite like that again. One of the original series' main premises was that it was story about people that happened to be set in space. Much of that character driven idea has stayed. Just like last week's episode about Data, the stories that deal with the human condition tend to be some of the best. Even the crazy techie episodes are told by how people react to the situations.

John

It's also the nature of the show that's more suited for streaming, with story arcs across multiple episodes.

Emanuel

With all the wardrobe she likes on the show, Katrina is going to have a closet full of 24th Century clothes by the time the series ends. πŸ™‚. Paula and Kat, never apologize for being too emotional. Empathy is in too short supply these days. Never lose yours.

Bruce Bromley

The funny thing about this episode having an Aladdin/Jasmine vibe is that it aired more than three years before Disney's Aladdin hit theaters. The next time you watch the first Ghostbusters movie, listen to Gozer's voice. That's Paddi Edwards (Anya in this TNG episode) in an uncredited voice role. Speaking of Paddi Edwards, I really enjoyed her acting in this episode. I got a real sense of both Anya's protective nature and her menace when things weren't going her way. Anyway, this was a really nice Wesley episode. Loved the story, loved the acting, loved the scene between Guinan and Riker, and especially loved the scene between Guinan and Wesley.

Jeff Seely

Love the braid energy yall! As a child, I did not like this episode. I had issues with Lovey dovey stuff back then. As an adult, I like it fine. It is very honestly written, and Guinen and Riker's scene is some really solid season 2 comedy. I dont actually have a problem with Wesley as he is in the show in season 2. He is a much like Peter Parker in the MCU, bringing a young perspective to an otherwise experienced crew.

Jonny Moonsliver

I had no interest in DS9 as an 80s-90s kid but did a 180 as an adult. Much of the show's themes were over my head or I was too sheltered at the time to notice. Also another great episode featuring the Riker Maneuver.
