Measure of a Man, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S2ep9

Comments

Did you ladies watch this episode from the Blu-Ray pack? On the Blu-Ray edition of Season 2, there is an extended version of the episode.

Anthony Goodwin

"Starfleet was founded to seek out new life, well, there he sits!"

Shawn Gates

Data opens presents like I do. I don't really expect to re-use the paper, but it slows down the process and lets me enjoy opening each present a bit longer.

John

So all these reactions have had me going back and rewatching a bunch of TNG on Amazon Prime. I had seen them all multiple times when they were first released, but having "been there, done that" I'd moved on to other shows and hadn't watched Next Gen for years until your reactions got me back into it. I don't know whether to thank you or curse you, because I just watched one of my all time favorite episodes but it's several seasons ahead. It'll be potentially years before you guys react to it. It's one of those episodes that tug on the heart strings, but it's all happy tears (at least, mostly). I'm so looking forward to you two reacting to it. I blame you for this, Paula!! ;) And thank you for it, too.

John

this was wonderful. loving your sincerity. See you next time

Brandon Scott

another great reaction ladies. I look forward to every Tuesday now. As long as your doing star trek reactions, I will be a patron. Keep them coming. And don't let your guard down with the COVID 19 virus. Its great when your sitting side by side doing the reactions, but i think everyone is fine with the setup you currently have until the threat has diminished. Stay safe.

glen parker

I've wonder what Q would have made of this.

Colin 3of5

Ah the perils of predicting how far science and technology will go. I've posted a link to a clip from Tomorrow's World (A science and tech show that ran from the mid 60s to early 2000's that tries to do just that.

Colin 3of5

Hey, trying to watch this video and I get the message "Sorry - Because of its privacy settings, this video cannot be played here" . I don't use Patreon all that much and I'm not sure what I can do about this?

Daniel Ireland

Fun Fact: Melinda Snodgrass the writer of this episode asked her friend, George RR Martin to review the script. This was my 2nd favorite court appearance by Picard.

it's so good and I was so happy to feel that way watching it again (I never know what's going to hold up and what isn't but I shouldn't have been worried about this one!) -Paula

Time Lord

I hadn't seen that before. Nice addition.

John

One other moment I liked was how Brent Spiner played it when talking about his medals and asking if keeping them was vanity. Very subtle, but he was almost excited at the idea that he could exhibit vanity just because it's a human trait.

John

I'd like to bring this up in case anyone (and the Gals themselves, of course!) haven't seen it: in the extended version of the last scene between Data and Riker, Data refers to Riker as "Will" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzxgzxH8UCs

Mary-Louise

I will not lie. Tuesdays and Thursdays have quickly become my two favourite days, for the simply fact that I get to see you two lovely ladies react to some of the greatest shows every made.

Scott Archibald

Fun facts: Data's storage capacity is about 100 petabytes, which is estimated to be about fifty times that of a normal human brain. However, his computing power is only about 60 terraflops, which is 60% that of a human brain. HOWEVER, operations per second is a complicated term, because teraflops measures floating point performance, whereas Data's positronic brain likely runs operations far more complex. It should also be noted that he is likely referring to single-threaded performance, and since his brain no doubt has a massive amount of parallelism in its tasks, Data's functional processing power is far in excess of human brains in practice. My point is on paper, those made-up numbers from the writers seem low with our current tech now, but are likely adequate to support Data's abilities in the show.

Jonny Moonsliver

This is not only one of my favorites episodes of this show, it’s one of my favorites episodes of tv. I like that there are not throwaway scenes, no B plot. So well written, deep and it makes you think. That’s my favorite kind of science fiction and story telling. Where the setting is just a mean to explore deep philosophical questions. Patrick Stewart was phenomenal.

Vicky N

I like how they took what was likely written as a throw away gag scene of Data and Tasha hooking up in Season 1 and turned it into a defining moment of his character.

John

Nobody tips Guinan because they've evolved beyond the need for money. (which begs the question what were they playing poker with?)

John

Denise Crosby was interviewed after this episode was broadcast. She was quite moved by Data's remembrance of Tasha.

Mark Chrisco

Haven’t seen this episode in over a decade and forgot how good it is. Also, “Picard” makes a little more sense to me after rewatching this. Have to say it’s extra cool that a female writer wrote the first “great” episode of TNG, especially at that time. Funnily enough, one of the other great episodes down the road was also a spec script. Also, more trivia - I think this is the first episode where we get a poker game, and it may be the first episode where we get a convo between Picard and Guinan. Nice job, ladies. This is becoming my Tuesday night entertainment while having dinner. Look forward to it every week.

trylikeafool

Imagine dropping that on someone's desk as your first script too! Way to hit the ground running, Melinda!

Peter Evans

Aye, sadly it is, wish to God we could reach a time when it's not.

Peter Evans

Kat: "I've never played Poker before." Paula's poker-faced internal monologue: "Time to pluck a pigeon!" Hurrah! I was waiting for this one too. Nearly flawless for me, only undermined by the nagging voices at the back of my head harping on about the ridiculousness of Star Fleet's legal system. I mean, c'mon - surely there's an appeals process? So, time for my subject to too-long-didn't-read take-away thoughts... 1: The thing that I love about this episode is that it's about grace as well; as in the disposition to act with kindness, courtesy and clemency. If this were a one note episode of 'slavery is bad', it would be a decent but unexceptional episode. What raises it is all the little instances throughout that Data shows of grace and humanity. Data aspires to be human, watching this I feel we should aspire to be Data. The most manifest of this is Data's treatment of Maddox at the end. Maddox was set on a course to a very dark place. Data's humanity in the end, I like to believe, turns him from this path. I don't hate Maddox - though the actor does a great job at making you - the ending saves him. This is why Data is boss. 2: Man, Brent Spiner really hits you in the feels, this one. He really is the ace up Trek's sleeve. We're already so invested in him that poor Maddox may as well have stormed on to the bridge demanding Picard give him Officer Puppy to take apart, and the camera pan across to show an adorable golden retriever sitting at the helm in a little Star Fleet uniform, and we'd be feeling pretty much the same outrage and hatred of Maddox. 3: Slavery, ugh. The other, also crappy, side to the debased coin that is slavery is that it destroys the master as well. It reduces them, makes them a thief and a tyrant, incapable of reason or honesty. It corrupted and debased the slave states (ironically retarded them economically as well, despite their conviction otherwise) and destroyed democracy with the political power entirely resting with the a slave-holding elite. It enforces a hysterical defence of the system, removing even the free-will and capacity of objectivity of the slave-holder. It is an abhorrent system that has absolutely no redeeming features whatsoever. What Data is threatened with is an outrage, but as Guinan gently guides Picard into fully realising is that the Federation's very soul is at stake. The episode does not have Data actually suffer the horror of slavery, only the threat, so the episode wisely focuses more on this aspect. Covering the African-American slavery issue there was a good 80's TV miniseries called Roots, starring - yes - Levar Burton! Funnily enough there was a follow up called 'Roots: The Next Generations'. No, it was not set in space. 4: Is it just me or do really good Trek episodes tend to start with Poker games? Or am I imagining things? 5: Guinan is great. The show was so lucky in getting Whoopi to play her. Shame it's really hard to get Guinan's attention at the bar when she's dealing with the dilemma of the day. Also, I've never actually seen anyone tip Guinan. C'mon crew. 6: Picard as defence. Man, you may as well just fold and back away from the table when that hand's revealed. Probably one of Patrick Stewart's best delivered speeches. Funnily enough a good five years before STNG there was a wonderful, wonderful TV series called Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy starring Alec Guinness, in which Patrick Stewart played the big-bad, the Soviet KGB head Karla, whose schemes Guinness attempts to uncover thwart. In it Patrick Stewart has no spoken lines. He still leaves a memorable impression! That's it from me. Sorry for the rambling long novel again. I just really like this episode! And *blub* I'm not crying... you're crying! STUPID CRYING! *BLUB*

Peter Evans

WHat everyone else said. Good episode, good reaction, strangely o kept calling Bruce Maddox , Brad maddox and had to look it up. 😂 yeah that guy was in wrestling also a creepy character, must be something about the surname

Steven morgan

This is one of the stellar episodes, but buckle up, Kat. It gets better from here. (with the occasional dud now and then)

John

I'm with Paula. Right from day one, this is one of the first major episodes I was looking forward to your reaction. It's SOOO good. The happy look on Riker's face when he found something that could help him win changing to despair because it could help him win was brilliant. And I can't say enough about including Tasha's portrait. I love that the history the characters have experienced never goes away. You'll see more of that as the seasons progress and there's more history to call back to. This episode wouldn't have been nearly as good if it has aired much earlier in the series. You needed time to get to know the characters and care about them. Now, we wait for Thursday's video... (tapping foot impatiently)

John

Been waiting for this one, have to wait a little longer to walk the doggo.

Kenneth

This is with out a doubt one of my all time favorite episodes and I'm very pleased to see anyone enjoy it so much.

Rylee

This really is the first great episode.

Stuart McConnell

Accepting spec scripts is not a common occurence I believe. Glad TNG did it, cos it delivered some gems. This was so well written. Star Trek at its best. And so well executed too. Picards speech is such a tour de force. "Isn't that becoming a race. And won't we be judged by how we treat that race." So topical today and probably always. Don't mess with Data! Kat, your emotions this episode were felt and shared. And Paula's litte smile early on of excitement for this episode's reaction when Kat wasn't looking was gold. Thanks Gals, very much enjoyed your reaction to this.

Pickupthepieces76

Katrina I do believe you are my long lost twin! Your feeling about Data exactly mirrors my own. And I always cry my eyes out on this episode but my God girl you had me ugly crying watching you react to this. Man I am enjoying this watch journey of The Gallifrey Gals. Official my #1 favor reaction channel.

Christine Ester

I wish I could find a confirmation, but rumors surround Whoopi’s appearance in this episode. The rumor is that she wasn’t in the original script, but when she was randomly visiting the set during filming, they wrote it her in. If true, what an amazing stroke of luck to be able to tie it all together in such a way. As everyone is expressing, this is an all timer. One thing I like to point out is when Data asks if keeping the medals is vanity. Such great acting by Brent Spiner because there is a bit of hope in his voice. Even though it’s generally seen as a negative trait, Data feels if he is expressing it, it’s one more step to being human. So beautiful.

Anthony Wickizer

That Riker scene is the textbook example of great face-acting.

The Crazed Spruce

One of my favourite episodes of all time, across ALL Trek shows, and by far my favourite from this season. Even rewatching it now for the umpteenth time, I still tear up during that closing scene with Riker and Data. (Oh, and as far as stress-eating goes? One cupcake, two cookies, and a handful of grapes, with a bottle of Orange Vanilla Coke to wash 'em down.)

The Crazed Spruce

That Legal Eagle video is very good, though I would recommend jumping to about the 1:00 mark to avoid a minor spoiler in the form of an outtake from a season you haven't gotten to yet.

Jeff Seely

Aww, poor Kat was an awesome reaction but this epsiode hits Data fans hard I almost feel bad for enjoying someone's suffering so much. But Paula is right this episode is a must mention when it comes to TNG for many people it is top 10 or even top 5 especially when you consider how early it comes, what meta topics its tackling (sentience and AI) and just how comfortable all the actors start becoming with each other and their characters which is really noticeable at this stage.

Deagor

Actually, I'm waiting for a great third season episode myself. :-) Love Katrina's reaction to this "roller coaster" Shame you had to do it at a distance, The YouTube channel LegalEagle did a fun review of the episode. BTW, don't forget to make this one downloadable along with the two others that still need to be. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVjeYW6S8Mo

Bruce Bromley

Man, that scene with Riker, when he realizes that he just found a slam dunk for the prosecution and gets a little triumphant over finding it, only to catch himself a moment later and realize what it actually means. I've been looking forward to this episode since Katrina declared her love for Data and for Tasha Yar, knowing that Tasha ends up helping to save Data from beyond the grave. And now, I must count the days until mid-August (I think, if I counted right) for the next anticipated episode. And wait I must... resisting that fact would be, of course, pretty futile. If the past few weeks have been an indication, however, I expect I'll have some forgotten gems to tide me over!

Rick Bell

The writer's attention to detail in this episode was masterful. She obviously paid close attention to what had come before and recognized that Tasha would be very important to Data. I mean, Tasha gave Data one of the most intimately human experiences we can enjoy. Of course she's going to be special to him. That scene with Picard and Guinan was really well done. I love the way she gently led him to the epiphany he needed and then disingenuously tried to downplay it to make him more confident in his assertion about slavery. Guinan is a very smart character.

Jeff Seely

The conversation with Picard and Guinan is very, very timely.

Zegron

This is precisely the reaction I expected, and it did not disappoint! :) This isn't a spoiler since the show never goes into it, but it's mentioned in the episode that captain Luvoi prosecuted Picard after the Stargazer was lost. From the dialogue, its implied that she took the trial too far, but Picard was exonerated of responsibility anyway, and the defeat drove her to resign from Star Fleet. So they had a fling, then she prosecuted him unfairly, and naturally, they fell out. This episode breaks me every time. Especially the evidence of Data's personal belongings, and Picard's speech. And Paula is absolutely right, the quality only goes up from here.

Jonny Moonsliver

My favourite episode of this season (although others get close!) - and one of my top 5 overall.

Ian Smith

Sorry for the delay, the scheduled uploader is having a few issues this morning!

Time Lord

I can't be the only one refreshing the patreon feed starting around 11:30 every few minutes on Tue. and Thur., waiting impatiently for the next episode?

Travis Starnes

My prediction going into this, Kat loves this is a data episode but has to be restrainted from murdering a certain man for the entire episode. Will check back once I've watched :D
