Unnatural Selection, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S2Ep7

The Gals watch episode seven of Season 2 of Star Trek: TNG. Today's episode can Katrina finally appreciate Dr. Pulaski? What does she feel about Picard's choice?? Will the crew of the Enterprise be okay?! Can they find a cure for this 'Unnatural Selection'?
Couldn't they have beamed all of the organic matter from the Lantree out as energy, and used robots to completely sterilize the ship of all life, instead of blowing it up? I guess there would still be a risk, plus they wanted a cool scene with 'splosions...

Picard takes over so that O'Brien doesn't have to bear the responsibility of beaming the doctor into space and essentially killing her. Picard didn't want O'Brien to bear that.

When picard takes over the transporter, it isn't out of fear of infection, note obrien is still in the room, it's that their were basically going to just blast her into energy and essentially use her to power the ship

Now now, there has been at least one British warship named Repulse. I'm pretty sure there were some age of sail ships with the same name over the years; but, the HMS Repulse from 1916 was a Renown Class Battlecruiser. The Royal Navy looked at what the Japanese aircraft had done at Pearl Harbor, and then decided "you know what, old chaps. Those bloody Japanese fellows might have been able to sink 2/3 of the US Navy using nothing but aircraft; but, I"m sure that if we send 1 battleship, and 1 battlecruiser completely unescorted and without any air cover at all, that I'm sure that they'll be able to fight off any Japanese Bombers. I mean, what are the chances that airplanes that fly over 200mph would even be able to catch a ship moving at 15mph?" "By Jove, I think you have a point, let's send 2 capital ships (one of which being built in 1916) through the pacific without any aid or aircover, why didn't I think of this?"
Well, 3 days after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese bombed and torpedoed HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales to death.

One of the other funny things (to me, at least) is that they pretty much always use one of the secondary shuttle bays. Because, a 1980s syndicated TV show wasn't going to get a budget that would allow them to ever build a set for the Main Shuttle Bay. One of the weird things with Star Trek The Next Generation is their response to distress calls. Remember Angel One, where they finally went looking for the survivors of the Odin literally like 7 years later?
Maritime law requires any ship that can possibly respond to a distress call to respond.
When the Titanic sank, the Captain of the Carpathia (the ship that picked up the survivors) ordered double crews in the boiler and engine rooms (remember, in 1912, you had people shoveling tons of coal per hour into furnaces, so doubling the number of stokers means you can theoretically shovel more coal, faster. And, the Olympic (which was on a trial run after some maintenance and refits) sent the message that they lighting all of their furnaces as fast as possible, and were making all speed possible; but, was 500 miles away. So, at 25 miles per hour, they would need 20 hours to make the journey; but, they still put in the effort.
In The Expanse, they have a much more sensible (than Star Trek) for ignoring distress calls, as The Expanse has ships that are still completely dependent on known physics. So, A ship is accelerating the whole time they're burning their engines, and coasting when they're not. So, to change course, a ship in The Expanse needs to burn their engines in a breaking maneuver, and if you've been accelerating for a week, you need a week of breaking burn, then you can start accelerating to the ship that is sending the distress call. So, the extreme cost of doing that, and the fact that you can't possibly render aid in a timely manner means that most of the time, captains won't even try.

Man, I just noticed that unit of measurement Data had for distance, 2.2 miliparsecs. That's literally like next door for Star Trek. So, a Parsec is 3.2 light years, so 6.4 light years would be 2 parsecs, and then another .66 for the .2. So 7.06 light years; but, now divide that by 1000. So 0.00706 light years, which would be around 400 AU (AU is an Astronomical Unit, which is the average distance between the Earth and the Sun). So, that would only be like 10x the average distance from Pluto to the sun. Even at Warp 1 (being the speed of light, they'd be there in 2-1/2 days. The Warp scale makes almost no sense at all, so Warp 9 is something over 1000x the speed of light, so just a few minutes.

Great video, ladies! As always, loved the conversation between the two of you. The show is getting interesting around this time of the season.

It's Picard doing his job, every man, woman and child on that ship IS his responsibility, like a father to his family and most of the time he meets that challenge heroically, he's the one saving the day most of the time because as the captain it's quite literally in the job description. As for Pulaski she still gets plenty of chances to shine here and if it weren't for her putting her life on the line to find out, as is HER job to do, they'd never even have worked out what the problem was let alone how to solve it, so it's still very much her episode

Anyone else find it funny that both the most recent Doctor Who AND TNG reactions mention quarantine? lol
Katrina's eyeliner be on point this episode! As an actor who does stage makeup themselves oftentimes, much respect.
Also Cheif Obrien is one of my favorite Star Trek characters.

This one was weird to me. I enjoy the story...and there are things to like in this for sure. But, it's really the first Pulaski episode. They have a medical problem. They come out and tell us that Dr. Pulaski is an expert in medical...uh...linearity. Then Picard saves the day. Call me crazy, but for the first Pulaski episode, I'd like to have seen it play to her strengths a little more. And, not have Picard save her. Again.

So much for Eugenics being banned in the Federation!!!!! Hahaha
I have always really enjoyed this ep. it’s a good start to turning Pulaski’s character around. She is still gruff, but seeing how far she will go helps to soften her. At least for me.
Plus, I know it’s vaguely spoilery to point it out, but my man Chief O’brian!!! Finally has a last name. I have never met him at conventions. I wonder how his role started to get upped considering he is really only in like 3 eps of season 1.

She is only vaguely aware of TOS. So the basics of Star Trek tech are pretty new to her. She has commented a couple times on how she is just realizing where certain ToS colloquialisms came from. It’s pretty funny when it happens.

Paula and Katrina, I’ve been a Star Trek fan all my life having grown up with original series and then TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. I wanted to thank you both as I’ve really been enjoying re-watching TNG with both of you. In your reactions you are both pointing out stuff that I’ve discussed with my friends previously but also some new things which I hadn’t heard before or considered.
As a little bit of trivia, In this episode we see Picard get the command codes for the USS Lantree to access the viewscreen. This is a call back to the original series and movie Star Trek II - Wrath Of Khan. In that movie we see Captain Kirk and Mr Spock get the command codes of another ship. To my knowledge it wasn’t until this episode of TNG that we saw a ships command codes be used, it won’t be the last time we see command codes being used either. Although to say how they are used would be a spoiler for later seasons.

Looking forward to next week probably more than the famously hinted at episode, only because my favorite character is featured. But yeah...the next two are good ones.

That’s “Chief” O’Brien since he’s an enlisted officer. And yeah, the back remaining episodes of season two have some great ones, starting with next week, in my opinion.

Either I didn't remember this episode all that well after 31 years, or I just have a different appreciation for TNG in my late 40s than I did in high school, but I really wasn't expecting to like re-watching this episode as much as I did. It's no [Episode Name Redacted], but it was good. These reaction videos, first on YouTube and now on Patreon in all its glory, have really given me an appreciation for the first two seasons of TNG, which I (mostly) dismissed in my youth.

Isn't your first line doing exactly what you mention in your second line. I know it's fun to talk about good stuff coming up. But mentioning it a lot and too specific just takes away some initial enjoyment for her and therefor for us as well.
Or as Sheldon put it: 'You told me it's mind-blowing, so my mind is going into it pre-blown, and once a mind is *pre*-blown, it cannot be *re*-blown.'

I was wondering how familiar Kat is with the original Star Trek?
Also always fun to see Paula trying her best to restrain herself from saying anything too much. You know she could just talk Trek for hours.

I’m hoping Babylon 5 and/or Fringe will be shows they react to, but right now I’m thinking Battlestar Galactica will be the most likely option. It’s been brought up a number of times in their reactions already.

Considering that the teleporter was created because the original show didn't have enough money to show a small landing craft of some kind drop off crew members, it's pretty well done.

Ah {insert rank of the week} *cough* I mean Lt. O'Brien. And so a star trek legend is born.
I swear, how in the name of jeez am I gonna survive until next week? And I just glanced through the synopsis for the rest of the season (cause while I know most of the episodes, I watched them usually through re-runs on TV so I'm really bad at which season is each episode). Man the back section of season 2 has some truely top class episodes.

Pulaski consults with her ‘Boss’ Picard and (albeit begrudgingly) follows orders.
House consults with his ‘Boss’ Cuddy (albeit begrudgingly) and ignores orders.

Interestingly enough, you can see for yourselves how well they did on the old person makeup for Dr. Pulaski. That's because Diana Muldaur is still alive (she's 81 years old). She stepped away from acting a long time ago, but she decided to come back for a new docudrama (currently in post-production) called Finding Hannah. If you go to the film's website, you'll be immediately greeted with a still from the film that shows what she looks like now. https://findinghannahfilm.com/
I like the way Dr. Pulaski was developed in this episode. By the end of it, she was on better terms with both Data and Picard.

Pulaski's dislike of the transporter is another parallel to Doctor McCoy from the original series. There's a theory of transporter operation that they scan you, dematerialize you and then rematerialize you at your destination. But your actual atoms aren't transmitted, just the data and you're recreated from material at the destination location. In essence you're killed then a clone is created every time. Continuity isn't great, though, and you do sometimes get lines like Picards comment about transmitting her atoms, so there's room for debate and plot. The Trek wiki says transporters convert you to energy, then convert that same energy back into matter, so you're still you, but different scripts have talked about it different ways.
