Elementary, Dear Data, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S2Ep3

Comments

anyone who hates holodeck eps is nuts.

Ashley

Kat hates Pulaski so much I love it.

Ashley

Man, it's been some time since I watched this episode all the way through. Man, it's so good. But, the part of Geordi building the model ship is kind of funny, as at another point in the future, Riker will have to explain what some of the parts in the rigging of a sailing ship are. So, a bit inconsistent, if Geordi was honest of building that model all by himself, and having a reverence for the age of sail.

I love love love Holodeck episodes!! They are such a blast -Kat

Listen, if it's a Data episode... I can promise I am always going to be over the moon! I'm glad you're on board with me! 😂 -Kat

Time Lord

Nothing wrong "so far" haha I personally almost always find them fun but it will be interesting to see if Kat agrees! -Paula

haha, love this -Paula

YES to all of this. I love what the holodeck allows the writers to do, but also it can be a bit of a cop-out. of course. And I think that's what makes Data so lovable, of course :) -Paula

That's a really insightful take on Dr. Pulaski's mindset. Like you I prefer Dr. Crusher, but when I recently rewatched Season 2 for the first time in decades, I found that Pulaski grew on me, too, throughout the course of the season.

Katrina rolling her eyes in the opening credits.. lol

I like holodeck episodes, they allow for the crew to go anywhere and explore anything. As soon as I see Moriaty, I instantly scream ‘Niles’! Guess that’s just the 90s child in me!

Red Hunter

I think she was just supposed to be stuffed, but her trying to act like she'd had too much tea and crumpets came across as being drunk rather than just eating too much.

John

1 thing that's got me slightly puzzled. Why was Pulaski was acting tipsy when she got up from the couch where she had been resting when Picard and Data arrived. I never noticed Pulaski drinking anything alcoholic when Moriarty was questioning her.I suppose the tea could have been fortified with whiskey or gin but that doesn't fit with the way Moriarty was being played.

Always o ed this episode and as others have said, Daniel Davis was a fantastic Moriarty. Nothing wrong with the holodeck episodes so far. I don’t want to comment on future episodes. One of the strengths of this show has always been the philosophical and ethical discussions that it evokes. What is the essence of a life form is one of the most debated theme in the show. Loved your reaction.

Definitely one of the better episodes of season 2, but I would put several others ahead of it. Unfortunately, my favorite isn’t until about 3/4 of the way through the season, so I’ve got a ways to go! Moriarty has always been one of my favorite “villains” on this show. Not only is Daniel Davis from the U.S., he’s from Arkansas of all places.

Such an amazing and subtle moment 😂 - Kat

I love the moment outside the holodeck when Picard startles Worf with his 🎩 and he gets into a fighting stance.

The 'Victorian East-End London' studio set is a thing of beauty. Nowadays, they'd probably do much of it with CGI and a green screen;but back in 1988 it was all done with props, and a very clever use of forced perspective. Old fashioned Hollywood ingenuity - hopefully not a lost art.

Daniel Davis as Moriarty was a great addition to the Star Trek canon. He's one of those actors you see everywhere. As Paula said, most know him from the sitcom The Nanny. I also like him in the film "The Hunt for Red October". This episode brought up some nice points. What can happen if any random hologram became self-aware. How would they handle it, especially, unlike Moriarty, they didn't acquiesce so easily.

Bruce Bromley

That was brill. This was the first episode that made me fall in love with next gen. the first series in England had been released on video before it came out on television and my brother had watched them all, I wasn’t that bothered. But I saw this one on television and I just loved it, the whole hole deck London got my imagination going, loving the reaction . Katrina face when Pulaski was being Pulaski had me in stitches, I feel her frustration.

Steven morgan

I was just a little kid when I watched this season, so I can't be sure of my INITIAL reaction to Dr. Pulaski. Over the years my opinion has settled mainly on liking her more than most fans do, but definitely less than Dr. Crusher. She's clearly showing prejudices and a lack of kindness, but I will say in her defense that it took me a while to realise part of why. Data is utterly unique in the universe, which we saw in S1. It's not like androids are commonplace and she's been crochety and xenophobic about them, clinging to old values. She's genuinely never dealt with an artificial lifeform, never been around anything like him before, and is obviously rooted in biological studies in her career so hasn't really been educated about him or the way his programming/hardware works. It doesn't excuse some of the ways she acts, absolutely, she's being unfair. But I don't really get the sense she's being cruel, just, ignorant and presuming, not being open-minded enough. ANYWAY, I too love this episode! I've never minded the holodeck episodes, though some are weaker than others. This one is always enjoyable for me, though. :) And it's always great to get more Data!! I'm glad Katrina agrees. XD

Is there a difference in the upload process? I can't seem to cast this to my tv, where as with the previous ones I could and still can.

Pickupthepieces76

The outstanding performance from Daniel Davis elevated this episode to something special. This is easily my third favorite episode from season 2. If Daniel Davis had been British, I think he would have made a great Doctor or Master on Doctor Who. I won't say which episode it is, but I think I know which episode Paula is referring to as potentially the best one in the entire series. I don't personally consider it the best (my favorite is in a different season), but it is excellent.

Jeff Seely

The only downside to the holodeck is it can be a MacGuffin for the writers. But it does open up a lot of story telling possibilities. Data is a great character because we get to explore humanity from the point of view of someone who doesn't know what humanity is and has to learn it from scratch.

John

I am LOVING how much Katrina gets excited for Data stories! And how much shade she throws at Pulaski. :D Also, I never noticed the Victorian pre-standardization red pillarbox when Pulaski enters the holodeck for the first time. It looks like a pre-Penfold design but is painted red, which means its a model installed circa 1866 (and painted red when standardization set in 1874) and is completely consistent with a Holmes-era setting. (Though I suspect this pillarbox's actual installation was in 2364, on Deck 9.) :)

Firefly24601

Getting clothes and props is easy - they just replicate them. If they have a genuine non-replicated historical article, that's usually a big deal.
