Welcome to our season premiere of the Gallifrey Gals' reaction show watching Doctor Who Season 5, Get Wibbly Wobbly! Katrina shares an all new Doctor with Paula our whovian newbie. Come along as we watch the gals react to this episode titled "The Eleventh Hour." Find out how Paula feels about Matt Smith taking over for Tennant. Will the TARDIS recover, will we recover! Let's find out together.
All Whovians hate every new Doctor after the previous doctor dies with the grief & loss iwe suffer. Then it takes a few episodes to grudgingly accept that they are good/great but in a different way to our previous beloved. I myself initially hated Matt Smith in the 1st episode & was not going to return. But friends talked me into watching more to my joy. I also think he is one of, or the best doctor.

I don't get why Moffat tried to make that "The Doctor in the TARDIS" line a thing, he uses it here and with the Angels a few episodes later, all it does is make the things saying it sound REALLY stupid, makes them lose alot of cool points

You not being sure about 11 made it so much better when he made you like him against your will.

If you can get to the video and it won't play, sometimes changing it down to 360 makes it work.

I don't know if anyone else noticed but right after the Doctor runs back to the Tardis and tells Amy that he'll be back in 5 min, when young amy is packing her suitcase, she runs through the hallway and the door is closed and then runs back through and the door is opened. Paula didn't seem to noticed but each time Katrina looked over at Paula with a look that said "did you see it? did you see it?"

See I am completely opposite. I like DT as the doctor. however the writing was horrible, every episodes written by RTD was just.....bleh. So bad. I could barely actually watch them. The writing was the worst the show has ever had from it's beginnings in the 60s. Moffat has been and still is to this day the single best writer for DW since before the reboot.

I doubt anyone will ever replace DT as my favourite Doctor. Such an amazing actor coupled with great writing and an amazing supporting cast, it's an impossible act to follow.
But this is where we begin to see my all time favourite crew of the TARDIS. Matt is perfect, so different, yet so familiar... just like a good Doctor should be. And Amy is... well Amy is perfect. And if anyone else joins, I'm sure I'll love them too. So much.
When this was first shown I had worries. There were familiar tropes that worried me. But I should have trusted the show. I should have realised Steven Moffat was on top form and everything would be brilliant.
Then we got to season 8 and oh boy did things go wrong. But that's ages away from now. Let's remember when this was a good show.

Even though we know regeneration is not necessarily random (as evidenced by a later episode), this "theory" feels like apophenia to me.
Since there is no canon or "bible" for DW, the writers have been making it up as they went along for more than 50 years. Secrets and revelations about the Doctor have never been part of some grand master plan. Rather, they have been building on what has come before by individual show runners.
I just don't see the justification for thinking this is anything other than a construction after the fact.

There's a fairly plausible theory that regeneration is not entirely random; that regeneration is influenced by the history of the current incarnation dying as well as how they die. Example: the Doctor previous to Eccelston's had just ended the Time War. So 9 was battle scarred and somewhat bitter.
When 9 turned to 10, he was in love with Rose (and saving Rose was the cause of his death). So when he regenerated, he became someone that fit Rose better. Someone younger and more lighthearted/charming.
When 10 died, he did so with the last words being "I dont want to go". 10 was obsessed with holding on to the things around him and to his own life.
I say this because in many ways I think you'll find 11 to have more echoes of 10 than you'd expect. He is still young. Still charming, though more quirky, but 11 tries to move on, where 10 tries to hold on.
Also the first few hours of interaction in a new regeneration also help determine its course. In this case 11 meeting child Amilia Pond will have an impact on how he interacts with children.

You two are so much fun to watch. More, please!
I am curious whether you will agree or disagree, but I always felt that Matt Smith played an "old doctor in a young body." The sense I got from previous (modern) doctors was that they were playing someone who was immortal. They had seen, done, been affected by events but their age in and of itself was not a milestone. I might well be reading into this, but Matt Smith's doctor always felt "older" than Ecclestein or Tenant. "My joints ache in the morning" older; "peeing is something I no longer take for granted" older. Just my interpretation of the performance.
Thanks for great entertainment during trying times. Greatly appreciated!

I believe Karen Gillan and her cousin Caitlin Blackwood met for the first time on set, though Karen had recommended her cousin for the role of young Amelia. Spooky thing is, if you look at recent photos of Caitlin grown up she is the spitting image of Karen. Also, she recently starred in a film called Sundown with Fraser Hines, who played Jamie McCrimmon opposite the 2nd Doctor in the 60s, and another film called Journey Bound with Sylvester McCoy, the 7th Doctor. It’s a small world the Doctor Who universe!

It feels like we've been waiting forever, but the wait was worth it for this reaction. Although, I have to point out you've got the "fan" and "newb" labels the wrong way around in the intro... and is there any chance you could do whatever it was you did to the TNG video to make it downloadable? It really does make for a better viewing experience.
Incredible to think it's now a decade since the era of the Eleventh Doctor started. In a recent retrospective article in Doctor Who Magazine, Steven Moffat gave some thoughts on the episodes of his first season as showrunner. This is what he had to say about "The Eleventh Hour": "This was a monster script to write. I actually did not have a particularly good time writing it, possibly because of everything weighing on me, and possibly because it's a very odd episode. Looking at it now, I think it's really good, and hugely entertaining, but what is the villain up to? What's the villain's plan? What's the jeopardy? It's like the jeopardy keeps reorienting itself to give Matt Smith another funny, brave or charming scene. It's not the most coherent 'alien menace defeated' plot ever. But it doesn't seem to matter, because it does the job -- I think, very well -- of presenting our three new stars in their new roles. I think it's deeply charming."
I think both Moffat and Matt Smith do a brilliant job in this episode, especially considering the pressure of following on from RTD and David Tennant. Paula may not be fully on board yet, but I predict she will be in just a few episodes time... :-)

Madman with a Box sums up 11 perfectly. This is probably my favourite series opener, which surprised me because I was fully expecting to hate Matt. He's not my favourite Doctor, but he was good from the beginning.

He was actually eating breaded coconut cakes and not fish sticks.
I really liked how Amy wasn't trusting the Doctor. She's the eyes of the audience, not sure of this new guy in Ten's clothes, and he's winning over her trust at the same time as the audience. It was a great scene with the tie caught in the car. You started rooting for her to trust him.

Ladies, through the next few series there are several WHO mini-sodes, most I believe are DVD extras. They don't always have allot to do with the overall plot but they do give you a little more character insight. And they're fun. Anyway, it should be up to you the reactor to decide if you'd like to include them along with the series episodes. End trans ...

Aaaand we're off!
I've been looking forward to this so much. The Moffat era is when Doctor Who went from a good show to my favorite show ever. The best Doctors, the best companions, the best stories and Moffat's incredibly clever and intricate writing.
The 11th Hour is my favorite season opener. Yes, Moffat had trouble writing the script. He had everything planned up to the point with the shed, when The Doctor understands who Amy is, but Moff had no idea where to go from there. It's a testament to his writing abilities that even when he struggles, he delivers something that is not just good, but clever, exciting and imaginative.
And then there's Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. A chemistry only rivalled, at this point, by 10 and Donna.
I'm so excited to go on this journey with you guys!

If you are wondering where you may know Amy and Rory from. Amy (karen gillan) is in the MCU as Nebula and Rory (Arthur Darvill) was on DCs legends of tommorow as Rip Hunter.

I understand why Paula isn't exactly fond of the new opening credits sequence. Neither am I, even now (several years after watching this season for the first time). It has a completely different energy from the ones we had in the Eccleston and Tennant years, and it's not an energy I like.
That aside, I'm excited for Paula's journey into season 5. It's my favorite season of Doctor Who.
But this opening episode might be my least favorite one from this season. I think it works well enough (and Amy's introduction is great), but I didn't find the plot or the villain all that interesting.
By the way, I want to mention that your mic audio sounds great. You're both coming through nice and clear.

I could watch an entire hour of the Doctor trying different foods with young!Amy. And I LOVE that montage of the Doctor's different faces, culminating in Matt Smith stepping through and officially introducing himself as the Doctor. Like Katrina, there is SO MUCH I want to say, particularly about Amy's relationship with the Doctor and her ... fascination, let's say, for him. Can't wait to see more of your reactions!
Quick cast note -- The guy who plays the man with the dog is Marcello Magni but he was not in Harry Potter. I think you mistook him for David O'Hara, who played Runcorn (the Ministry official Harry polyjuices into in Deathly Hallows 1). They do have very similar faces.

O.K., which of you two had it better. Paula, who had months to adjust to the idea of a new Doctor on Who. Then there's Katrina who only looks like had mere minutes between the ST: TNG Season Two trailer and reacting to the first episode of the season seeing Crusher being replaced by Pulaski. :-)

Just started watching it and the look on Katrina's face right after the opening credits... it's that melancholy nostalgia of going back to your childhood home.
It's so cool watching Paula's reaction. I'm having reactions similar to Katrina as I revisit a story I already know and seeing fresh reactions and remembering how unsure I was about who Eleven was and where he would be going. So much to come.

Such a great introduction to Matt Smith! After two Doctors that were closer to human than ever before, Matt Smith is definitely something very different. You immediately get the sense that there's something otherworldly about this guy. The show as a whole feels very different. Quite apart from the more down to earth approach of the RTD era. This era feels more like a fairytale, more fantastical. This is perfectly encapsulated in the way this episode casts the Doctor as Amy's imaginary friend. Speaking of her, I think Amy gets a very unique and interesting companion set up. The idea that the Doctor has sort of imprinted himself on her is great and exploring the consequences of that should be interesting. It'll be great to start this journey with you again! The Moffat era is quite a wild ride.... not all of it is a smooth one. As for this particular series? It's in my top 4 of modern Who, so I'm looking forward to a lot of great episodes.

It's okay, Paula. Nobody will replace David, but Matt is a good actor, even if the writing for his Doctor makes me angry at times. And yes! That guy playing Jeff was in Game of Thrones, playing Sam's brother Dickon Tarly. He was also in the show Black Sails as Billy Bones, and in Merlin as...Percival, I think?
