I give the episode an S just for the memory of me being a kid and watching this episode and giggling at the pronunciation ( found this out as an adult 😂) of the Countess’s name Regina … I thought it was Vagina . Found this out recently…. Ok maybe 5 min before writing this comment.

Thank god TNG was made before that Benedict Cumberbatch version so we essentially got a book-centric version of the characters. Had the BBC show been around, we probably would have gotten something more in line with that like we did with Robin Hood in Q-Pid and the Kevin Costner version.

Eh I think there is more too it as there are some twists that one doesn't see coming, at least not on first watch (namely them being in the holodeck, and the tricking Moriarty with the same thing).

Greg Quinn

That is a really interesting suggestion regarding Pulaski. Definitely would have added resonance to the story. The only downside is we wouldn't have had Stephanie Beacham as a guest star.

I never believe ST will break the 4th wall. So I didn't realise Picard wondering about being a simulation in a device on a table meant a TV set!!! Also, it's a really nice touch that Reg Barclay relates so well to the Countess, since he is always more at ease in the holodeck.

Nice callback to one of my favorite Season 2 episodes.

I think it was great that they decided to include Barclay in an episode that's not about him. What better way to show how far he's come by having him just acting as another member of the crew? Same personality, but just more confident.

C-Tier, Daniel Davis does a lot of the heavy lifting in what is yet another TNG 'Holodeck malfunction' episode whose potential is kneecapped by the following dialog exchange: MORIARTY: Call it what you will. All I know is that despite Picard's promise, he's done nothing. Just left me to go quietly mad. BARCLAY: He would not have forgotten his promise. The Captain would not do that. It's a small miracle that Moriarty didn't go on a Khan like rampage once his program was reactivated.

B-Tier for a few reasons - Picard's solution happened off-screen and is never revealed, which I hate. The creation of Moriarty as sentient was far too easy and repeatable, that I find it difficult to believe this was the only instance... and yet they did it again apparently with his girlfriend. It happened twice on this ship but no where else? Also, I find it difficult to believe that Data would not notice he is speaking to a hologram and I also find it difficult to believe it would take Picard that long to notice. Holograms are general replication of real people... If you work with someone daily for years, you would notice something is off, especially if they don't remember anything discussed prior to today. Lastly, some word references to Pulaski would be nice. It's still a fun premise and above average, but not S-Tier in my opinion.

What would’ve elevated this to an S for me is if they had brought back Pulaski. Make her pivotal to the plot. Replace Moriaty’s love of the Countess with that of Pulaski. Picard, Data, and Barclay could’ve brought her in as a hologram. I know she’s a controversial character, but I will never forgive TNG for completely shelving her without so much as a proper goodbye. Watching the scene of Moriarty and a holographic Pulaski going out to explore the galaxy would have been even more poignant. Still a great episode, but there was room for improvement.

Brilliant episode

Binty McFrazzles

A nice bottle episode about a bottle program in a bottle- worth an S

Actuarial Lurker

This is the best use of broccoli yet to me. He’s a fully matured character. Schultz always brings a new direction with each return.
