While everyone is absolutely entitled to their own preferences and opinions, I don't know that Walter Koenig can be entirety objective with regards to that question. There are definitely reasons he may have thought B-5 was... Best. 😉

I remember when it first premiered, DS9 was being called a rip-off of J. Michael Straczynski’s “Babylon 5”. There was a period of critical comparisons going back and forth between shows that lasted a couple of years. Even Walter Koenig (Chekov) went on record, saying he preferred the writing and intrigue of “Babylon 5” over DS9.
Deep Space 9 struggled to find and keep an audience at the beginning. People seem to wax nostalgic NOW about how “great” the first season is…but this was not the case in its original airdate. The series sure could have used you all at the time. But, hey, Deep Space 9 survived and hardly anyone talks about “Babylon 5” nowadays, so there you go.

Gentlemen: I viewed Dr. Bashir as this show's version of Giordi- talented but being portrayed as inept around women. When I first watched I did see Odo as Data or Spock- trying to learn about these "strange humans" and their emotions and culture

If you treat this show simplistically as a WWII movie where the Fderation are the Allies and have driven out the Cardassians but haven't really "WON" and the Bajorans were the ones in camps and DS9 is like Rick's Bar from Casablanca then we see how rich the character driven episodes can be

I love DS9 because it really fills out the world of the federation.

I am happy with how much you like DS9. I think it has some of the best characters of the entire franchise. That said, I still like TOS and TNG better.
Also, because someone else mentioned it, the interplay/rivalry between DS9 and Babylon 5 was definitely a thing back in the day. Over time, I've come to respect B5 more, despite it having a rough start. Watching those shows simultaneously, and seeing some of the pettiness back and forth is great.

On release I kinda hated this show because I was in this like anti-TNG mode. I was a full on Babylon 5 convert and they were kind of competing shows where I felt B5 did everything better.
I came back to DS9 during season 3 and basically fell in love with it and realized how stupid it was to be so tribal. Then I had 2 awesome space station shows and still get a little giddy happiness when I hear the intro music for either.
I was in my 20s living in a house with 4 other dudes who I had known since high school and we all just had a huge nerdgasm every week being served up these great shows.
Great reaction. I love Avery Brook's Commander Cisco, and generally love this whole damn cast. I love TOS the most of all Trek, but DS9 is a close second. It has some of the same issues as early TNG but for me the cast is just as endearing and also liek TNG I feel like once they find their footing it is top tier.
The nostalgia is strong with this one and I am very happy to ride along with y'all.

DS9 boldly goes where no Trek has gone before.

Actor name pronunciation assistance...
Odo's actor's last name is pronunciation roughly "oh-bur-jon-wah." It's French in origin.
